Oklahoma senior infielder Jack Mayfield crushed a three-run home run over the left-field wall in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally No. 14 Oklahoma to a 10-8 win over New Mexico in the final of the Kleberg Bank College Classic on Sunday in Corpus Christi, Texas.
OU pounded out a season-high 14 hits. Junior infielder Matt Oberste, the reigning Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, went 3-for-4 with his third home run of the season, a three-run blast in the first inning.
Freshman right-handed reliever Ralph Garza Jr. earned his first victory, striking out two over the final 2 1/3 innings. Junior lefty starting pitcher Billy Waltrip fanned nine over five innings as OU pitchers struck out a season-high 13.
The Sooners host Pepperdine Friday to start a three-game set.
ORU 9, Louisiana Tech 3: In Ruston, La., Graham McIntyre led Oral Roberts to victory over Louisiana Tech.
McIntyre had three hits, including a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Brandon Healy came off the bench and added two RBIs on a late-game single.
In the top of the fifth, with the Golden Eagles down 1-0 after a Louisiana Tech run in the third inning, ORU scored four runs and never looked back.
McIntyre picked up his double with one out to score Tyler Boss and Chris Williams. Boss drew a walk to lead off the inning, moving to third on a double to the left-center field wall by Williams.
Two batters later, McIntyre cleared the bases with his double down the line, just out of reach of the diving first baseman.
Logan Domenico reached on a misplayed ball by the Louisiana Tech second baseman, allowing McIntyre to move over to third. Kevin Cho laid down a squeeze bunt and McIntyre beat the throw home as the Eagles took a 3-0 lead.
The final run of the inning came as Matt Brandy singled to center, scoring Domenico from second.
Up next for ORU is a 3 p.m. Tuesday contest at Wichita State.
OSU 5, NJIT 2: In Stillwater, Oklahoma State won its fifth straight game Sunday by sweeping New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Brendan McCurry hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie, and Randy McCurry notched his first save of the season by keeping the Highlanders off the scoreboard over the final three innings.
The Cowboys improved to 7-1 on the season.
OSU finished with 10 hits, three of those by Robbie Rea, whose 3-for-3 day raised his batting average over the .400 mark.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Arkansas-Little Rock at 4 p.m.
