1. Mid-Lake wins the Classic
Mississippi angler Cliff Pace did some hopping around during the Classic, but the majority of his time focused mid-lake, between Drowning Creek, Horse Creek and Shangri La. He looked for "staging areas" where fish would migrate from the main lake, out of the main current, "but not way up where they spawn yet," he said. "I was fishing the in-between part."
2. Palaniuk was close near Sailboat Bridge
Rathdrum, Idaho, angler Brandon Palaniuk spent most of his time north of Horse Creek toward Sailboat Bridge. He found large spawning flats and located channels off the main river that led to those areas. Where the channel, "bumped into a point or where the flat made a steeper drop," that was the place to fish.
3. Iaconelli steady off the mouth of Horse Creek
Pittsgrove, N.J.'s Mike Iaconelli refined his description of the area he fished near Cleora. He hit main and secondary points off the mouth of Horse Creek. The key to success included channels and rocky sections. "If you had a main or second point that had transitional rock on it and a channel that swung near the point, that's a classic pre-spawn pattern," he said.
