Cascia Hall girls coach Linsday Rodgers wasn't ready to celebrate Monday when her Commandos raced to a 16-point lead in the Class 4A regional final.
She knew what Oologah's Mustangs could do. She had watched them rally from a 14-point deficit in Friday's semifinal win over Berryhill.
"They've been down before. They gave us all we wanted tonight. They are tough. Not for a moment did I feel comfortable," Rodgers said.
She had reason to worry. The Commandos saw their lead melt to two in the fourth quarter, but held on to win 52-46 for their first regional title in 13 years.
"We hadn't been here before and we knew we had to work hard this season if we wanted to get here," senior center Liesl Spoerl said.
She had 12 points and 17 rebounds and dominated the game until picking up her third and fourth fouls in the third quarter.
Central won the boys regional title, racing to a 69-52 win over Berryhill as four Braves scored in double figures.
"I like the way my team is playing right now," Central coach Eli K. Brown III said. "We're starting to put it all together."
Cascia Hall 52, Oologah 46 (girls): Jaime Rahilly had 16 points and Reagan Derr hit three treys among her 11 points. The Commandos advanced to play No. 3 Cushing at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Skiatook for a berth in the state tournament.
Cascia (20-6) led 33-17 early in then second half, but Oologah had been there before. The Mustangs (20-6) trailed 31-17 after halftime at Berryhill, but rallied for a 50-49 win.
Taylor McElhaney scored 18 points and Jessica Wolfe had five treys among her 17 points to bring the Mustangs back.
The Mustangs closed to 42-40 with 4:40 left, but got no closer. Derr's drive and dish to Sarah Weeldreyer made it a five-point lead with 58 seconds left.
Central 69, Berryhill 52 (boys): The speedy 12th-ranked Braves started pulling away midway in the second quarter and led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Jakobee Large scored 15 points to pace the Braves, who advanced to play Victory Christian at 8 p.m. Friday at Skiatook for a berth in the state tournament.
Delvon Lucas added 14 points and Aryian Smith and Shamar Manuel scored 13 each. Colin Belveal led the No. 14 Chiefs (19-7) with 19 points.
