One takeaway from this year's Oscars: Soft, big waves are a hot look in hair. Actresses Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain and Kerry Washington were among those rocking the classic hairstyle at the 85th annual show.
Creative director Morgan Willhite of Ouidad, the pioneer of the curly hair industry, shares with us her styling tips on how to re-create the glam look.
To get the waves seen at Sunday's Oscars, Willhite recommends treating the hair the night before with Salon Series by Ouidad Omega-3 Replenishing Hair Treatment. This will boost color and increase shine while helping to control frizz and keep curls silky smooth.
1. Apply Ouidad's PlayCurl Volumizing Styling Spray to wet hair. This product allows the hair to be prepped for styling prior to drying. To create these soft waves, use a large 1-inch iron or hot rollers. Whether you use an iron or rollers, make sure hair is completely dry before touching the achieved curl pattern.
2. After you have set the curls and allowed them to cool, avoid a brush and use your fingers to break up the waves until they naturally interlock.
3. Finish with Ouidad's Climate Control Frizz & Flyaway Fighter by spritzing onto palms and running over the surface of hair. This will add shine while taming frizz.
Organizing a makeup bag
Allure magazine offers tips on how to organize a makeup bag.
Check the material. Choose a makeup bag that is easy to clean. Nylon fits the bill, for instance, and for this purpose is better than a cotton or leather-lined bag.
Reinforce your bag. You may have a great bag with an inside that is easy to clean, but that doesn't mean you can slack on keeping your makeup closed up tight. Tighten all caps. Consider putting compacts with hinges in a resealable plastic bag. Also, it wouldn't hurt to keep a few makeup wipes handy in your bag to clean up spills.
Sort your brushes. Doing this will not only make grabbing for that shadow brush a lot easier, it will prevent the different makeup residue from mixing. Those narrow resealable snack bags are a great idea to stash brushes by type.
Empty and repeat. About once a month or as often as needed, your makeup bag should be refreshed. Turn it inside out and wipe it down with a brush cleaner and paper towel. This is also a great time to do an inventory on what might need to be replaced.
