People & Places: Tulsa Area United Way celebrates record-breaking 2012 campaign, gives awards

The Tulsa Area United Way celebrated its largest campaign ever during its 89th annual awards ceremony held recently at the Tulsa Convention Center.
The organization raised a record-shattering $25,575,522 during its 2012 campaign - the highest total in its history - exceeding its goal of $24,900,000 by more than $675,000, well above the all-time fundraising record set 10 years ago.
"The entire community deserves credit for the amazing successes of the 2012 campaign," said Mark Graham, president and CEO of the Tulsa Area United Way. "This United Way belongs to all of us, whether we give, receive or both."
More than 800 guests representing corporate, philanthropic and nonprofit communities attended the event, which also recognized top company and organizational performers and honored a community leader.
"The annual awards ceremony is a long-standing tradition and an opportunity for the entire Tulsa Area United Way family to come together to recognize the successes of the past year and look forward to this year's campaign," Graham said.
Chet Cadieux, president and CEO of QuikTrip Corp., was chairman of the 2012 Tulsa Area United Way fundraising campaign. He will serve as chairman of the United Way's board of directors this year, succeeding Jim Bender of WPX Energy Inc.
Becky J. Frank of Schnake Turnbo Frank PR will be the chairwoman of the 2013 campaign.
The Clydella Hentschel Award for Women in Leadership was presented to Dr. Nancy Feldman, a longtime community volunteer and activist on behalf of women and minorities.
The award was named for Clydella Hentschel, who broke ground as a female community leader in Tulsa and served as co-chair of the Tulsa Area United Way campaign in 1993 along with her husband, David Hentschel.
Feldman founded the Tulsa Center for the Physically Limited, now known as the Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges. A Girl Scout since the age of 7, she has been a role model to girls and women, serving in positions from troop leader to member of the local and national boards of Girl Scouts USA, as well as in India. She has been active with the Community Service Council, Family & Children's Services, Child Care Resource Center and many other organizations.
The Williams Summit Leadership Award, the Tulsa Area United Way's most prestigious award for best overall campaign, was awarded to QuikTrip Corp., which experienced a 40 percent increase over its campaign last year and recorded its ninth consecutive year of raising more than $1 million. In 2012, QuikTrip attracted more than $2 million in support for the United Way campaign.
Companies and organizations that raised more than $1 million during their 2012 campaigns received the Cornerstone Million Dollar Club Award, including QuikTrip Corp., Bank of Oklahoma, J.A. and Leta M. Chapman Trusts, ONEOK Inc., and Williams.
Major sponsors of the 2012 campaign included American Airlines, Arby's, Flying Colors, MidFirst Bank and QuikTrip Corp.
Companies and organizations receiving major awards were Bristow Medical Center and Global Health Inc., Ignite! Award; American Red Cross, Tulsa Area Chapter and Blood Services, Illuminate! Award; Ramsey Industries, Trailblazer Award; Saint Francis Health System and Matrix Service Co., Leadership Giving Awards; Frederic Dorwart Lawyers, Small Business Award; and United States Postal Service - Customer Service Administration, Combined Federal Campaign Eagle Award.
Of the more than 500 companies and organizations that received awards at the ceremony, 68 earned Best of the Best Awards, including Ability Resources Inc., Alliance Resource Partners LP, Anchor Gasoline Corp., BancFirst-Tulsa, Bank of Oklahoma NA, BKD LLP, The Bridges Foundation, Broken Arrow Seniors, Budco, Caring Community Friends Inc., CenterPoint Field Energy Services Inc., Central National Bank, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc., Eastern Oklahoma Donated Dental Services, Ernst & Young LLP, Explorer Pipeline, The F&M Bank & Trust Co., First Oklahoma Bank, Firstar Bank, Frederic Dorwart Lawyers, GableGotwals, HoganTaylor LLP, Jim D. In the past 89 years, the Tulsa Area United Way has invested more than $643 million in the community.
The Tulsa Area United Way provides services to more than 630,000 people annually through its partner agencies in Creek, Okmulgee, Osage, Rogers, Wagoner and Tulsa counties.
