ORU women lose to McNeese State, drop out of first

Oral Roberts fell out of first place in the Southland Conference standings with a 76-71 loss to McNeese State in women's college basketball Thursday night in Lake Charles, La.
Kevi Luper scored 24 points to lead ORU (14-12, 11-5 in Southland). Sarah Shelton added 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Taylor Cooper finished with 14 points for the Golden Eagles.
ORU senior Jaci Bigham finished with 11 assists.
The Golden Eagles trail Sam Houston State and Lamar for the top spot in the league; the Bearkats and Lady Cardinals won Thursday night and improved to 11-4 in Southland play.
McNeese State (15-11, 10-5) used a 9-2 run in the final three minutes of the first half to erase a five-point ORU lead and take a 33-31 lead into halftime. The Cowgirls continued to press their advantage in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 10-2 over the first four minutes to build a 10-point lead.
McNeese was led by Ashlyn Baggett, who hit 5-of-9 3-point attempts and scored 26 points.
The Golden Eagles face Lamar at 4 p.m. Saturday in Beaumont, Texas.
