Morton Comprehensive Health Services has opened a satellite clinic at the Greater Cornerstone Community Center in west Tulsa.

Morton CEO John Silva said at an open house Friday that the area has few medical services available and that Morton's new locations will help the community.

"The need in west Tulsa is beyond discussion," he said.

Sen. Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa, said good health is necessary for people to thrive.

"Unless you change people's health, you can't educate them, and they can't get to work and they can't do the things that they need to do," he said. "So I would encourage this partnership."

The clinic, which has three exam rooms and a small waiting room, will be open Monday and Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons.

It will offer adult and pediatric medical care, including physical examinations, diagnostics testing and treatment for minor injuries and conditions such as the flu and sinus infections.

If further medical care is needed, such as dental or pharmaceutical services, Morton will offer transportation to its main campus.

In addition to its main campus on North Lansing Avenue, Morton has a presence downtown at its homeless clinic, in midtown at Family & Children's Services, in east Tulsa at the East Tulsa Family Health Center, and in Nowata.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett said the clinic at Greater Cornerstone could help ease congestion at emergency rooms and help provide care for the uninsured.

"I certainly congratulate Morton again for providing leadership and a beacon of hope," he said.

The 21,000-square-foot community center at 4122 W. 55th Place opened in September.

It has food and clothing distribution, a gym, an exercise room, a computer lab and a small library, and it can serve as a community shelter.

Other on-site partners include Creoks Behavioral Health Services, Campfire USA, Counseling and Recovery Services of Oklahoma, DVIS/Call Rape, Family & Children's Services and Life Strategies International.
