Gardening glee

If you're a die-hard gardener, you haven't let the intermittent pretty days in Tulsa slip by unused. You've probably been getting out, getting your hands dirty and starting to get ready for the spring. You may have even gotten some of your cool weather crops planted, too.

Peel open your garden book or better yet, print out our local extension center's gardening guide to get an idea where to start if you haven't already.

"The guide is just a guide," said Steve Smith of Southwood Landscape and Garden Center. Still, it provides a great framework to plan around.

While some veggies can handle a little frost, others cannot. Sow too early and your seeds might not take off or they'll get too big and leggy. Plant too late and you're undermining your plant's growing potential.

"Preparation, preparation, preparation," Smith said. "It's so important to work the garden."

Amend your soil and be sure to get it tested.

"That's so important," Smith added. "A lot of people will slap something in the ground and wonder why it didn't grow."
