Letter to the Editor: Scorched earth

I find it very curious that Republicans often complain about how "broken" Washington is - because they broke it. How? Republicans put individuals in the federal government who think the federal government is the source of society's problems. In short, Republicans elected people to an institution they despise. So, it is not surprising that Washington is the way it is.

Many Republicans, and specifically House Republicans, ran on a platform that promised to restrain, stop, shrink, downsize, etc., the federal government - in essence, a platform that promised to disable the federal government.

This self-destructive sentiment betrays the brutal mind of modern Republicans, namely, that they think it better to dismantle the institution rather then have the Democrats lead it - a scorched-earth policy if ever there was one.

If I may provide a business illustration that most Republicans will understand (for I know they love comparisons to business): What Republicans have done is the equivalent of putting Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on the board of directors for the New York Stock Exchange - which is, of course, putting people in charge of an institution who are ideologically opposed to that institution - so of course they try to undermine it.

Shame on Republicans. They are willing to sacrifice the American people and the national interest for their petty and narrow political interests,
