C-USA Women: UCF upsets top-seeded SMU

Gevenia Carter scored 20 points, Briahanna Jackson added 18 and Sara Djassi contributed 11 as UCF knocked top-seeded SMU out of the Conference USA Women’s Tournament on Thursday.

The No. 8 seed Knights lost to the Mustangs by 15 points on Jan. 13 in Dallas. But this game went by a different script, consisting of a game of runs.

UCF thrived on thefts against the Mustangs, setting up some scores with fast breaks. It already had 10 in the first half.

With the Knights up 69-66, Keena Mayes attempted a 3-point shot to tie the game for SMU with five seconds left. But her shot did not go in.

A free throw by Carter sealed the game for UCF with 1.8 seconds left.

Mayes led SMU with 15 points. Alisha Filmore scored 12 and Korina Baker logged 11.
