5 to Find: Favorite Coney-style hot dogs in Tulsa

Coney-style hot dogs have been a local tradition for as long as meaty franks have been nestled into soft, steamed buns. Here are five of our favorites.

It originally started as Coney Island 5-Cent Weiners wayyyy back in the 1920s. Times (and prices) have changed, but the side-armed wooden school chairs in the downtown Coney Island haven't. The lovingly nicknamed "death dogs" - fully loaded with onions, cheese, hot pepper and chili - are still the most popular item on the menu.
The shop is tiny, and that's fine with most folks. You can watch the franks cook through the shop window as the line winds out the front door on busy lunch hours.
The "special" - three cheese coneys and a soda - will run you about $5.50.

This place has been a Tulsa tradition for more than six decades. Like any good Tulsa coney, they're cheap, too: a regular with mustard, chili and onions will put you out about $1.35. Add cheese for 10 cents.
And true to the second half of its name, you can order tabouli, yeros, spanakopita (spinach pie) and more. Just not on Sundays.

We like the west Tulsa location. For nearly 20 years now, Shirley Kennedy has helped run the joint with a recipe her ex-husband began selling to restaurants in 1971.
A three-way platter lets you choose three favorites (yes, that can be three coneys, or two coneys and a house salad, or a sauerkraut dog, taco salad and cheese coney ... have it your way) for about $6. And there's a "phony coney" made with mustard, cheese, chili and onions - hold the hot dog.

Local favorites Billy Sims BBQ and Ike's Chili House have teamed up to sell gourmet franks, coneys and more at The Farm Shopping Center.
A regular coney with chili, mustard and onion will put you out about $1.79. The Billy Dog replaces a hot dog with a Billy Sims hot link, coleslaw, barbecue sauce and bacon for $4.99. The Switzer is an all-beef dog with spicy mustard, cream cheese, sauerkraut (or chili) and bacon for $4.49.
Be sure to ask what's new, as the special changes monthly.

Many may know this place as the Junkyard Dawg. It's still on the menu, too, and includes an all-beef "dawg" with red mustard, Axle sauce, grilled onions, spicy chow chow and cheese on a large bun for $4.47.
The "T-Town Pup" coney is the standard favorite all-beef dog with mustard, diced onions, chili and cheese on a regular sized bun, all for $1.67.
