Michael Wilson Atkins of Springfield, Illinois passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. Michael was born on September 30, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Lorenzo and Marianna Atkins. Michael enjoyed a law career in Springfield. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a graduate of Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma University College of Law. He served as an elder and a deacon in his church, First Presbyterian and was a volunteer at Memorial Medical Center in pastoral care. He was passionate about gardening and the outdoors with a special appreciation for birds and trees. He will be remembered for his fine sense of humor, his compassion and cherished as a friend by many people. Michael is survived by: his wife, LuAnn Massengale Atkins; daughter, Ann Atkins Wright of Bethesda, Maryland; son, Thomas Atkins of Frankfurt, Germany; and daughter, Mary Atkins of Springfield, IL; five grandchildren; brother, David Atkins of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held Sunday, March 17th at First Presbyterian Church, 301 S. 7th Street, Springfield, IL, beginning with a visitation at 1:30 pm followed by a memorial service at 2:30 and a reception thereafter.
