Letter to the Editor: Angry

I'm angry after reading the above-the-fold article regarding the state education board ("State ed board debates proposed changes to A-F school grading system," March 1). This state, our children and their education system deserve far better than board member Bill Price. He openly admits he's not doing his job.

He says he hasn't seen the University of Oklahoma/Oklahoma State University research report regarding the Oklahoma A-F school grading system. I would ask: Why not? It's his job.

Is he unable to pick up the phone or email state Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi for a copy? What about the option of contacting any one of the researchers directly? Maybe even a Google search?

The report has been available since Jan. 18, when it was released to the public. So, Price doesn't know what it says? Yet, he can wag the selective pabulum from a Northwestern University professor that John Ford provided him and accept its generalities as high praise of a significantly flawed grading system.

The humorous part of his faux pas is that the letter's author explained that he "intentionally spoke of concept, rather than formula." That's professor-speak for he doesn't know squat about the grading system he's praising.

It appears to me that if this is Price's best effort on behalf of our children, then he is filling a much-needed void on the state Board of Education.
