Lunch 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday (bookstore 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday); accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover.

We selected a soup and sandwich combo ($5.95) of Irish stew and the corned beef and Swiss sandwich, a cup of potato soup ($3.95) and shepherd's pie ($7.95) with glasses of fresh-brewed iced tea ($1.25).

The Irish stew served in a white bowl over a white paper doily was filled with tender, slow-cooked beef, potatoes, carrots, onions and celery in a rich brown broth.

The Irish stew also was the foundation for the shepherd's pie that was topped with mashed potatoes and grated cheddar cheese. I also plucked a bay leaf out of the stew in this bowl.

The corned beef and Swiss sandwich on lightly grilled rye bread didn't miss the sauerkraut at all. This was a highly satisfying sandwich on a chilly afternoon.

The potato soup included some green beans, bits of ham and a sprinkling of parsley.

HODGES BEND

823 E. Third St.

Food: charcuterie and cheese board only -

7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday-Sunday (alcohol service begins at 11 a.m. daily); accepts all major credit cards.

We were told a charcuterie and cheese board ($17) had one meat, a variety of cheeses and a few other items, so we sprang for that along with what we hoped would be appropriate wines.

The board included saucisson sec, a pork tenderloin charcuterie; four cheeses, Saint Andre, Manchego, Danish Blue and Cambozola; and cherry chutney.

During the process of working our way through the cheese board, we had glasses of an Italian MÃ1/4ller-Thurgau, a Spanish albarino, a German riesling and a Californian gewurztraminer, all dry to off-dry white wines that were beautiful complements to the cheeses and the trout.

Everything we had was solid, and I'm happy to say the sausage gravy, in my opinion, has improved 100 percent.

We had a mix of breakfast and lunch dishes, including the smoked turkey melt sandwich ($6.99), a chef's salad ($7.49), a meat lover's omelet ($7.29) and the Santa Cruz breakfast sandwich ($6.99) with a side of biscuits and gravy ($1.99).

The Santa Cruz sandwich was a standout with a mix of scrambled eggs and smoked turkey breast topped with melted Swiss cheese and slices of avocado on a toasted ciabatta bun.
