Making concessions

Except for the savory taco variety, you won’t find a salad at ONEOK Field. That’s not a criticism, though. After all, when you ponder the words “America’s pastime,” the words “health food” don’t come to mind. But during Drillers games this season, you’ll find much more than hot dogs and popcorn. So let game night be your splurge night, and live a little. You have numerous options to tempt your palate.

Salty stuff

At the outfield concessions stand, you can order the Driller Dog ($3.50) off the grill, as well as a bratwurst ($4), chili and cheese dog ($4.50), and kids-size hot dog ($2.50). Snacks include Frito chili pie, nachos with cheese, a jumbo pretzel (also with cheese), box of popcorn, roasted peanuts and Cracker Jacks.

The first-base and home-plate concessions stands offer a more extensive menu, with grill options including the same as above, plus a cheeseburger, grilled chicken sandwich, chicken tenders and — attention, health-food seekers — a veggie hot dog ($3.50) and vegan Boca Burger ($5).

Additional snack items here include Mazzio’s pizza, with a two-slice special ($6) and single slices ($3.25 each), as well as French fries and curly fries ($3 each) and, what we made a mental note about for next time, chili cheese fries ($4). Take a walk around the park and you’ll find a variety of vendors, from popcorn carts to a Mexican-themed one, offering a stuffed burrito ($6.50), nachos supreme, soft and hard tacos and, yes, that taco salad we told you about above ($6.50). Other options include Chicago-style hot dogs and Philly cheese steak, a cart that has a rib-eye steak sandwich that looked incredible ($7) and Philly cheese steak nachos.

Sweet treats

With summer not too far off, you better believe ice cream will be available, with one particular stand offering frozen novelties — a Sponge-Bob stick, anyone? — and a souvenir ice cream sundae helmet ($4.25), to which you can add a churro for $1. You can also order a root beer float, Orange Creamsicle, push-ups, funnel cake and a dairy-free ice cream bar. Flavors, by the way, include vanilla, chocolate and a twist of both, with toppings of fresh fruit, candy, cookies, chocolate syrup, caramel, fudge, peanuts and, of course, whipped cream.

You can also buy candy at various carts, plus cotton candy and snow cones ($3 each). The first-base and home-plate concessions have a frozen lemonade cup and ice cream cookie sandwich, and there’s a Dippin Dots stand.

Wet your whistle

You won’t go thirsty at ONEOK Field, which offers everything from bottled water to beer. In addition to multiple beer carts, a margarita kiosk offers the Big Slugger margarita ($7.50), frozen ’ritas ($6) and premium cocktails ($6), along with house wine and souvenir draft beer ($5 each).

Beverages at the first-base and home-plate concessions include sodas, bottled tea, small draft beer, coffee and iced cappuccino. Another cart offers fresh-squeezed lemonade.

New noshable additions for the 2011 season

Cue the Q

It was hard not to hover — not that much effort was put into keeping a tastebud-teasing distance away from the big black smoker. From quite a few paces back, we caught a whiff of the BBQ Smokehouse, one of the newest food offerings at ONEOK Field. Sweet smoke and the sizzle of meat will no doubt be a siren call to many barbecue fans for upcoming Drillers games, particularly the Bubba-Q sandwich and the BBQ pork, brisket and chicken plates, the latter of which comes with baked beans, potato salad and corn bread.

Local hotdogs

Nearby, you can order an awesome foot-long from Tulsa’s own Siegi’s Sausage Factory, which will have two carts at ONEOK Field. When we stopped by, they were making a foot-long bratwurst piled with relish and a squirt of ketchup. Other mouth-waterers include foot-long hot dogs and smoked sausages, ($6.25 each) as well as sides like chips and a kosher pickle, plus beverages. Then wash it down with a Marshall’s Brewing Co. beer a few steps away at the neighboring beer cart.

Burger fan?

Check out the new Half Pound cart, which offers its “Signature” burger, a half-pounder and sliders (three of them per order) for $7 each. Like Siegi’s, you’ll find chips, a kosher pickle, and bottled soda and water.

Kids Zone

The popular playground area provides a place for kids to slide, spin, teeter and totter.

The area is free for kids 12 and younger and is open before and during games.

“It’s great because it’s visible from really every seat in the ballpark, so parents can really keep an eye on them without having to chase them all over the ball park,” said Brian Carroll, director of public relations for the Drillers.

And the neat, squishy-feeling surface under the play area is a Terra Pad: Invented by a Tulsa company, it’s made from recycled and compressed rubber from tires.

Hornsby’s Hangout

Kids will no doubt, be tugging at mom and dad’s jerseys to visit the other highly visible children’s area — Hornsby’s Hangout. Named after the Tulsa Drillers mascot, the area hosts about five inflatable toys, including a huge slide. It costs $1 per stop at the Hangout, or a $5 wrist band provides unlimited access.

Hornsby, the lovable mascot, poses for photos and signs autographs all over the ballpark throughout games.

Fireworks

Kids love fireworks, so parents won’t want to miss the first Fireworks Friday on opening weekend. Since the ballpark opened last season, the fireworks “were certainly our biggest nights of the year,” Carroll said. “The fireworks are great, but when you can put downtown Tulsa as a backdrop, it’s just wonderful.”

Options for families

A look at how much it will cost for a family of four to attend a Drillers game at ONEOK Field under several options:

Option 1: The Family Plan package with tickets in section 119 on left-field line (Sunday through Wednesday games only); includes:
four tickets,
four Driller Dogs,
four 16-ounce soft drinks,
a game program,
a wrist band for all-play in paid playground area for older children, and
a coupon for a gallon of Borden milk.
Total cost: $40

Option 2: Dugout reserved seats with souvenirs and snacks:
four tickets ($10 each),
game program ($3),
Drillers replica cap for each family member ($10 each),
two hamburgers ($6.50 each),
two chicken sandwiches ($5 each),
french fries, pizza slice, jumbo pretzel or peanuts for each person ($3 each),
one 16-ounce beer ($4), and three 21-ounce soft drinks ($3)
Total cost: $83 without food and drinks; $134 with food and drinks.

Save a little: A few ways to cut costs:
Save $10 off option 2 by replacing hamburgers and chicken sandwiches with Driller Dogs.
Save $20 on tickets off option 2 by watching from the lawn-general admission in the outfield berm ($5 per ticket).
Go on a Tuesday, when general admission tickets are $2 and Driller Dogs, soft drinks and pizza slices are $2 each.
Thirsty Thursdays offer $1 beer and soft drinks.

Spend a little more: A few options if you have extra cash:
Add $60 to the cost if each member of the family wants an official Drillers fitted cap ($25 each) instead of a replica cap.
Add $4 if the family shares a tub of popcorn or ice cream in a helmet.
