Inauguration Day Schedule

- Sunday, Jan. 18
- Welcome event on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday afternoon. The event is free and open to the public.
- Monday, Jan. 19 -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- To honor Dr. King’s legacy, the President-elect and Vice President-elect and their families will participate in
activities dedicated to serving others in communities across the Washington, D.C. area.
That night, on the eve of the Inauguration, there will be a youth concert at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington, D.C. The concert will be free, but tickets are required.
- Tuesday, Jan. 20 -- Inauguration Day
- According to Presidential Inaugural Committee, the order of events beginning at 9 a.m. include:
- Musical Selections: The United States Marine Band, followed by The San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus
- Call to Order and Welcoming Remarks: Senator Dianne Feinstein
- Invocation: Dr. Rick Warren
- Musical Selection: Aretha Franklin
- Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will be sworn into office by John Paul Stevens, associate justice of the Supreme Court
- Musical Selection: John Williams, composer/arranger with Itzhak Perlman, (violin), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Gabriela Montero (piano) and Anthony McGill (clarinet)
- President-elect Barack H. Obama will take the Oath of Office, using President Lincoln’s Inaugural Bible, administered by John G. Roberts, Jr., chief justice of the United States

- Benediction: The Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery
- The National Anthem: The United States Navy Band “Sea Chanters”
- The 56th Inaugural Parade will then make its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House with groups traveling from all over the country to participate.

Local Events
- Tuesday, Jan. 20 -- Inauguration Day
- Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford Ave., is holding a free program from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to showing a live feed of the inauguration activities, prizes will be awarded in an “Obama-Rama Presidential Trivia” contest, with questions based on books, magazines and newspapers from the library’s collection. Beverages will be provided by the Friends of the Rudisill Regional Library. For more, call the library at 596-7280.
- Circle Cinema, 12 S. Lewis Ave., will broadcast the Inauguration Day events with doors opening at 10 a.m. Admission is free, with the usual concession fare ready for purchase.
- Sadie’s Coffeehouse, 567 E. 36th St. North, is inviting people “to spend and remember a history-making day with friends and family” during Obama’s swearing-in and address.
- Greenwood Cultural Center, 322 N. Greenwood Ave., will host a free program from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. that will feature two big screens broadcasting live coverage from Washington through a direct interactive link to the District of Columbia courtesy of Rollerson Productions. There also will be live entertainment, food, drink and Obama-related souvenirs available.
