Questions and answers

What is novel H1N1 flu?
Novel H1N1, often referred to as swine flu, is a new influenza virus that is spreading from person to person. The World Health organization signaled June 9 that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was under way.

Why is novel H1N1 virus sometimes called swine flu?
This virus was originally referred to as swine flu because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in the virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally are found in pigs in North America. However, further study has shown that this new virus is very different from those.

How does novel H1N1 virus spread?
Flu viruses are spread through coughing or sneezing. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something that has flu viruses on it and then touching the mouth or nose. What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people?
Fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. The virus can sometimes result in severe illnesses and death.

Who is affected?
About 70 percent of people who have been hospitalized with this novel H1N1 virus have had one or more medical conditions previously recognized as placing people at “high risk” of serious seasonal flu-related complications. This includes pregnancy, diabetes, heart disease, asthma and kidney disease.

One thing that appears to be different from seasonal influenza is that adults older than 64 do not yet appear to be at increased risk. CDC laboratory studies have shown that no children and very few adults younger than 60 have antibodies to novel H1N1 flu virus; however, about one-third of adults 60 and older may have antibodies against this virus. It is unknown how much, if any, protection may be afforded against novel H1N1 flu by any existing antibody.

How long can an infected person spread this virus to others?
People who have seasonal and novel H1N1 flu may be able to infect others from one day before getting sick to five to seven days after. This can be longer in some people, especially children and people with weakened immune systems and in people infected with the new H1N1 virus.

Prevention tips

* Hand sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol are effective.
* Surgical masks only keep in germs and do not prevent a person from inhaling the virus.
* Cough or sneeze into a tissue, sleeve or arm.
* Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after sneezing or coughing.
* Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
* Avoid close contact with sick people.
* People who are sick should stay home until symptom-free and feverfree for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.
