ORU freshman out for season
McClintock was expected to be an impact player.

HUNTER MCCLINTOCK

There could hardly be a more deflating way for the Oral Roberts basketball team to open the season.

Head coach Scott Sutton revealed Sunday that freshman guard Hunter McClintock tore a knee ligament in practice and will miss the season. ORU opens Monday by hosting the University of British Columbia for its first exhibition game.

"I'm really disappointed for Hunter," Sutton said. "He was playing so well and was really looking forward to his freshman year and getting a chance to play his first (collegiate regular-season) game at Wake Forest, which is right down the road from his home."

Wake Forest is about 90 minutes from Durham, where McClintock played high school basketball. ORU opens the regular season at Wake Forest on Nov. 13.

McClintock finished as North Carolina's No. 2 career 3-point shooter with 366 treys and spent last season at the Patterson (N.C.) School, averaging 11.2 points and 5.3 assists for one of the nation's top prep school programs.

A gifted open-court passer, McClintock received recruiting interest from the University of Kentucky and chose ORU over offers from TCU and Hawaii. ORU fans were eagerly anticipating his debut.

"We've talked a lot about him. He was a great 'get' for us," Sutton said. "He's one of those players who makes everybody better on the court. It was a blow, but the best thing is that we have some depth, especially in the backcourt. Some of our guys will get a little more playing time now."

Sutton was excited about playing
McClintock in tandem with junior point guard Rod Pearson, who started two Division I seasons at Southeast Missouri State before transferring to ORU.

The Eagles also have returning sophomore guards Ken Holdman and Beloved Rogers. Sutton also signed 6-foot-4 Warren Niles and has batch of intriguing walkons. Mikey Manghum captained England's under-18 team in the European championships.

McClintock stepped on a teammate's foot in a routine drill Friday and underwent an MRI Saturday to determine the damage, a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He will have surgery and is expected to be out for six months, a spokesman said.

Sutton said he knew little about UBC, which opened Friday with a 71-44 win over Canada West-rival Trinity Western. Josh Whyte and Blaine LaBranche scored 16 each.

"These games are more about how we play than scouting the opponent," Sutton said. "It's a good way to get the guys in front of a crowd and hopefully get some jitters out of the way."

Projected starters are Pearson, junior college transfer Michael Craion and ORU's three leading returning scorers, Dominique Morrison, Kevin Ford and Kyron Stokes.

Bummer indeed for him and ORU team mates as well as the fans. I'll be praying for his recovery and for the exciting way in which other team members now have the opportunity to step up, adjust, and fill the gap. (Adversity for one is always opportunity for others.) Heal quickly Hunter!!
