Sutton says junior guard's knee injury "looks severe."

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Oral Roberts University basketball team ran out of magic Saturday and may have lost another player.

Junior guard Rod Pearson, who made the game-winning shot in Wednesday's upset of Stanford, injured his left knee and watched the second half from the bench as the Golden Eagles fell 76-55 at the University of Virginia on the second leg of the Cancun Challenge.

Late in the first half, Pearson made a steal and was on his way to the basket, but came up limping and grimacing after trying to make a sharp cut on his left leg, ORU head coach Scott Sutton said.

"I don't want to speculate, but it looks severe," Sutton said. "We had two kids go down the same day a few weeks ago with torn (anterior cruciate ligaments) in the same practice. This would be our second point guard to go down."

Freshman point guard Hunter McClintock and redshirt freshman forward Tim Morton injured their knees in the same Oct. 30 practice session and are out for the year.

Pearson, who transferred from Southeast Missouri State, was averaging 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in his first season with the Golden Eagles.

ORU was to fly on Sunday to Mexico, for its final two games in the Cancun Challenge. Sutton said the Eagles may not know the severity of Pearson's injury until the team returns to Tulsa next Friday.

"We need to get an MRI done, but I don't know where that would be," he said.

The Eagles faltered in the second half Saturday in losing to their second Atlantic Coast Conference foe in eight days. ORU opened the season with a 76-56 loss at Wake Forest.

Kyron Stokes made four first-half 3-pointers and the Eagles led by as many as six points, but shot only 25 percent (7 of 27) in the second half. Leading 46-40, the Cavaliers used a 13-2 run to start pulling away.

"One time I looked down and were 2 of 15 from the field in the second half. We were probably fortunate to score 55 points," Sutton said.

Senior forward Kevin Ford led the Eagles with 16 points and 10 rebounds, notching his second double-double of the season.

Devastating blow, if it's as bad as it sounds. Pearson was the motor of this team - he will be sorely missed for however long he is out. Hopefully, it's not as severe as they think!

WOW! BUMMER!! What next? Roderick, I'll be praying for your complete and rapid recovery, no matter what the diagnosis.

This has got to be a psychological blow to the team and coaching staff. This additional adversity gives the Golden Eagles (entire team and coaching staff) the challenge of re-creating the team positions, players' roles, and game strategies. And yet, it is times like this that afford the best opportunities to see the character of the athletes and coaches.

For what it's worth, my encouragement to all. Get creative, get united, think outside the box for solutions, and determine to move ahead as a team.

Again, my prayers go out to the injured. You are not forgotten or moved aside. Your role for this season has just changed. Find your new role and give it your all. Go Golden Eagles! I believe!
