Position watch

Quarterback

The Cowboys practiced twice on Tuesday, and starting quarterback Zac Robinson's participation in both was limited. He has been bothered by what coach Mike Gundy describes as a strained hamstring.

"He's better. He probably could have practiced this afternoon," Gundy said. "We may hold him (out) another day or two."

Scheduled for Saturday is a major scrimmage. While Robinson has been sidelined for most of the last four practices, backups Brandon Weeden and Alex Cate have continued their competition for the No. 2 job.

"To be honest with you, I'm really enjoying watching (Weeden and Cate) learn from trial and error," Gundy said. "Make good plays and make some mistakes. They've made more good plays than mistakes. They both do things better than they did in the spring, but they're still both making some mistakes."

News and notes

Mitchell leaves camp: OSU first-year freshman safety Joe Mitchell has returned to his home in Katy, Texas. On Monday, OSU officials learned that the NCAA is investigating whether Morton Ranch High School officials tampered with Mitchell's academic transcripts. Two sources told ESPN.com that Katy Morton officials or coaches may have altered Mitchell's transcripts.

"We learned more today about it," Gundy said on Tuesday. "As of now, (Mitchell) has to work through those issues before he can come back here. Hopefully, it can be within the next few weeks. If not, then we certainly would like to get him back in January."

Big-game openers: Oklahoma State plays a nationally prominent opener when Georgia visits on Sept. 5. Within the next few seasons, Gundy said, there could be comparably significant openers.

"We're getting some big-time offers to play openers against teams for big-time financial packages," he said.

Early lines: Oddsmaker Danny Sheridan has established OSU as a six-point favorite over Georgia. Sheridan also set a line for the Sept. 4 Tulsa-Tulane contest (Golden Hurricane by 14) and the Sept. 5 Oklahoma-BYU clash (Sooners by 25).

The triplets: Rivals.com has ranked OSU quarterback Zac Robinson, wide receiver Dez Bryant and running back Kendall Hunter as the No. 1 trio in college football. Florida had the No. 2 trio with defensive end Carlos Dunlap, linebacker Brandon Spikes and cornerback Joe Haden. At No. 3 was Oklahoma with QB Sam Bradford, TB DeMarco Murray and tight end Jermaine Gresham.

Hit man: Because of arthroscopic shoulder surgery performed during the summer, OSU sophomore strong safety Victor Johnson wears a green jersey while practicing. The green jersey signifies that he is not to be involved in collisions, but Johnson apparently, is color blind. He insists on belting teammates.

"Vic is like a military guy who is breaking war rules — wearing a cross but then pulling out a gun," Gundy said. "He's using it to his advantage."

Fight song: When asked about first-year freshman safety Daytawion Lowe, Gundy replied, "He made two big plays (on Sunday), and I sang 'Hail to the Titans' (the Midwest City Carl Albert fight song). He got a big kick out of that. He made several plays. This is a good freshman class."

Opponent watch

Georgia

The DawgPost.com Web site reports that the Bulldogs have been practicing in blazing heat, which could prepare them for a hot Oklahoma afternoon on Sept. 5.

"The coaches did a good job this summer of not having us working out in the mornings, but having us out there when it's hot," defensive tackle Kade Weston told DawgPost.com. "It's tough going in the sun, but it's going to help a lot."

Robinson, Hunter and Bryant, might be the best triplets Ok State has ever had, sorry, Coach Gundy. ; )

Um, I'm from the new school Rhymeister and if any other back was in Gundy's triplets other than Barry Sanders, I would agree with you. But that man was an absolute freak! The triplet award goes to the '88 squad simply because he was in it.
