Will OSU live up to the hype?

Mike Gundy's OSU Cowboys are No. 7 in Sports Illustrated's preseason rankings and No. 10 in The Sporting News. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

STILLWATER — From a distance, Oklahoma State must look pretty good.

Sports Illustrated decided to put Cowboy QB Zac Robinson and center Andrew Lewis on the cover of its college football preview. OSU is No. 7 in SI's preseason rankings.

The Sporting News has OSU at No. 10 and rates Robinson and Dez Bryant as the nation's top quarterback-wide receiver combination.

In the preseason coaches' poll — a more relevant list in that it is used in the Bowl Championship Series formula — the Cowboys are No. 11.

From a distance, it might be more difficult to focus on OSU's issues, which include the lack of an established No. 2 receiver, the lack of an established backup QB, and a defense that returns most of the front-seven personnel which last season produced only 15 sacks.

Absolutely, yes, the Cowboy program is zooming in a positive direction. The growth spurt since 2005 has been remarkable, but is OSU really ready to beat Georgia in such a high-stakes showdown?

To a man, Cowboy players express confidence. But do they feel confident?

Undoubtedly, Georgia is aware of the Oklahoma State hype. Mark Richt-coached Georgia teams are 30-4 in true road games. Georgia played 10 games last season that were witnessed by a crowd of at least 83,000. Hardened by membership in the SEC, the Bulldogs won't get stage fright when confronted by 50,000 at Boone Pickens Stadium.

For OSU, the significance of the Sept. 5 Georgia test cannot be overstated.

During the 2008 preseason, Clemson was a trendy pick as a possible national contender. The Tigers were ranked No. 9 and had a huge opener — facing Alabama in Atlanta. Finishing with zero rushing yards, Clemson was crushed 34-10.

The Tigers never recovered. Their coach, Tommy Bowden, was fired at midseason and they went on to close with a 7-6 mark.

If OSU loses in the opener, coach Mike Gundy would have to perform emergency surgery on his team's self-esteem. But if the Cowboys can conquer Georgia, it could launch them to the type of breakout season that the national media seem to expect. OSU would be hailed as a legitimate contender worthy perhaps of additional magazine covers.

The Georgia opener is critical. I'm more concerned about Gundy's play calling in that game than I am about how we're going to play. I think the team will be prepared, should be great to watch.

Bill, enough with your horrible slant. Coming from a guy who thinks the Pokes are going to go 8-4, I'm not sure why I expected a fair look from you going into the Georgia game.

Tell me, which team EVER has an "established" #2 receiver when the #1 receiver is so dominant? Any of the other receivers (Blackmon, Cooper, Anyiam, etc.) are more than capable of being the #2 guy.

And is "the #2 QB" really that big of a deal? If Zac gets injured, one of them will go in. Does it matter which? They both seem to have nearly they same skill at the position otherwise Gundy would have named one already. And if Zac doesn't get injured, then how is it even an issue at all?

Your entire article doubts the Pokes based on "what if" scenarios to back up your awful prediction. Here's to you eating crow at the end of the season.

Will Stillwater State live up to the hype? Nothing in past seems to say yes.

Should be a GREAT game, even better if the Pokes take it.

Sounds as if Haisten expects the Pokes to collapse if they don't beat Georgia. Shoulld they just forfeit the rest of the games. I think it more often works out that a team can lose a game at the early part of the season and be able to make adjustments, possibly change personnel assignments, and go ahead and have a great season. I could happen they would have a better season than if they win the first game. It could even win the national championship. I happens all the time. It is better to lose a game to a good team in the first of the year than at the end. Anything can happen in the first game.

I for one hate this "All in" feeling regarding the Georgia game. OSU football doesn't have too good a track record when the spotlight is on them. If they do pull out a win, Houston looms large the next week, and Rice is no slouch either depending on how much energy is consumed in the first two games.

Preseason Cotton Bowl prediction is pretty lofty and one has to have a stellar season to beat that. For once I hope the Pokes live up to the hype.

Have that, America (8/18/2009 1:03:07 PM)
What I don't understand is that the "hype" right now is that we are the third best team in the Big XII south, which, if we live up to means we should be a 10-2 or 9-3 team at the end of the regular season.

People make it sound like OSU is slated to win it all this year, and that everyone has them ranked #1 all around, but the fact of the matter remains that OU and Texas are both excellent teams who just so happen to be in our division. which means, even if OU and Texas both beat OSU...because they will both be favored and both be projected to beat us...then people will say we didn't live up to the "hype" when in reality, we did exactly what was expected.

I think that we should be able to finally shake free of the Texas pains that have bothered us so much these last several years and beat the horns on Halloween, beating OU in Norman is where I think the pokes finally drop a game.

But again...I think that people are "hyping up" the "hype" if that’s even possible...making it sound like it’s more than it really is. I haven’t seen anyone say that OSU is going to go undefeated and win it all. This is what we as fans HOPE for, but that’s not what I’ve seen in the media as to what the hype is about the pokes.

Lemme put it this way…if OSU goes 11-2 this year…beat by Texas and OU and wins the cotton bowl…is that a disappointment? Is that failing to live up to the hype? Or is that exactly what we SHOULD be able to accomplish? If OSU goes 11-2, beats texas, but gets beat by OU and gets beat in a BCS game…is that failing to live up to the hype or is that doing MORE than is what’s expected?

There’s a dozen scenarios that can play out…all in all I say that if OSU wins 10 regular season games this year we have successfully lived up to the “hype”…beyond that I think we are exceeding expectations and going beyond the “hype”

Yes, but Georgia is going to have the best of them come Sept. 5th
