Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy said that Jamal Mosley, a sophomore who would have been the starting tight end this season, has left the team for personal reasons.

On OSU's depth chart released this week, Mosley was listed as a starter for Saturday's season-opening meeting with Georgia. But on Tuesday, Gundy confirmed that Mosley, a native of Memphis, Tenn., no longer will play for the ninth-ranked Cowboys.

"Jamal Mosley is leaving our football team for personal reasons," Gundy said in a statement issued by the university.

"He has been a good teammate and we wish him the best. We will have no further comment on this matter."

Sophomore tight end Wilson Youman is expected to be promoted to the starting position.

As a redshirt freshman last season, he played in all 13 games and had one catch.

According to an Oklahoma State Courts Network document dated Aug. 25, a Stillwater woman was granted a temporary emergency protective order against Mosley.

He was presented with the protective order last Thursday. According to the Oklahoma State Courts Network, the case is scheduled to be reviewed by Special Judge Louis Duel on Wednesday.

OSU officials have not said whether Mosley's departure is related to the protective order.

In July, the 19-year-old Mosley was charged in Stillwater with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

As a freshman last season, Mosley played in 11 games and totaled five receptions for 57 yards.

When
Brandon Pettigrew was sidelined for three games with a sprained ankle, Mosley got extensive playing time.

What does the protective order and marijuana charge have to do with this story Bill? It's inflammatory and a journalist with any ethics would know better.

patentwilk the protective order and reefer charge shows a pattern of unacceptable behavior by this student/athlete that probably directly contributed to his reason to leave the school.

patentwilk: Because the marijuana charge happened a little over a month ago and the protective order was filed within the last week?

It's 100% relevant.

It's inflammatory. You don't mention the protective order unless you do your fact checking and tie the two together. One could have nothing to do with the other.

patentwilk, it's got EVERYTHING to do with it! This kid is/was a thug! He got in trouble for marijuana and now has an emergency protective order against him by a freshman in college. The personal reasons that he left were his personal problems which resulted in Gundy telling him to go home. OSU is a better team without players like this - no question!

Parentwilk...it's obvious you know nothing about journalism or the legal basis behind it. New York Times v. Sullivan 1964 for a starting point.

Mosley obviously has some personal issues to straighten out before he ever worries about becoming a high-level college football player.

I don't care if he was a thug, got kicked off, or left on his own volation. I have problem with the way it was reported. The story is that he left. Some will want to know why. When Bill had the reason why, he should report why. He is "suggesting" that he left because of the protective order, but offers no facts to support such a conclusion. If and when he gets those facts, he should report the reason why. Until then, it's speculation and sensationalizing of the story.

baldryan, Norman (9/1/2009 10:31:13 AM)
Wow. You know nothing about sensationalism.

Haisten never said that was the reason why he left the team. But it's clear and 100% true that Mosley has tangled with the law twice in the past month. How different would it have been if he reported Mosley's stats from last season? Would he be "suggesting" that he didn't catch enough passes and that's why he left?

If there's anything you should be criticizing this reporter, or the Tulsa World, in regards to this story, it should be that they didn't report on the marijuana charge last month after it happened.

bigshow: it has nothing to do with Bill's legal right to write the story. It has to do with presenting the facts of a story accurately. Bill insinuated that the protective order had something to do with him leaving. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. But a good journalist would present the protective order issue until he knew for a fact if it was related. Anything less is just an act of publizing the protective order.

bald: just ask yourself, what is the story? The story is that Mosley left the team. That's it. Everything else is irrelevant, until the facts, not supposition, can be used to explain the reason behind the deparature.

PatentWilk: the protective order and drug charge is a matter of public record. The reporter is well within his rights to state the facts.
I'm glad the kid is gone. I don't want someone with his track record representing OSU. Let him be some other team's problem.

If everything else was irrelevant, the story would read: "Jamal Mosley leaving Oklahoma State football program." That's all.

Again, how different would it have been if (instead of the facts that he's had two run-ins with the law in the past month) Haisten reported Mosley's stats from last season? Would he be "suggesting" that he didn't catch enough passes and that's why he left?

He reported that Mosley is a native of Memphis - maybe Haisten is "suggesting" Mosley misses home and will be moving back there?

patentwilk, are you kidding me? Ethics? C'mon man. The kid left the team unexpectedly. And he's a starter, for a top ten football team no less. So where does a journalist go from there? Naturally he would investigate whether the player had any recent legal troubles. Very often that leads to dismissal from the team, or suggestion to leave. I understand where you are coming from but i think the mentioning of the guy's recent legal troubles is warranted here. If you play college sports and get in trouble with the law, AND SUDDENLY DISAPPEAR FROM THE ROSTER you are going to end up in the spotlight. Comes with the territory.

I wouldn't have read the story if it wasn't an OSU guy, but my problems with the way the story was presented would not change. Like I said earlier, I don't care that he left. I just thought it was a tacky way to publicize the protective order.

Mosley's hometown, stats, etc. are not the story. The story was that he left. You report his position, year, that he left, and Gundy's comments. Those are the facts at this time. If the protective order had something to do with it, than you confirm that, and then report it. Until then its just supposition and was irrelevant to the story.

I agree with everyone else patentwilk... I mean all of the sudden leaving a top ten team for "personal reasons" right before that start of the football season.. idk seems kinda shady.... An it's his suggestion an makes you wonder if thats what the personal issue was when he wrote of the legal issue.. I think that's probably why he left and others may draw their own conclusion.. thats what makes it a good story!!!

First of all, he was cleared of the marijuana charges. He just happened to be at the worng place at the wrong time.

With that said, the restraining order is nothing but bad news. When these things happen, it usually is just the tip of the iceberg of news to come.

My guess is that he got the restraining order, Gundy asked why, and upon hearing the bad news, told Mosely he could leave the team due to personal reasons as opposed to waiting until the real news broke and in result being kicked off the team instead.

Either way, it's really bad timing and I really hope Youman has gotten enough snaps to be prepared for the upcoming game.

I want to agree with you Patent, and the spirit of what you're saying is right...Bill often speculates and implies facts, but if you read this particular article closely, he does qualify the police report addition to the story by saying 'officials haven't confirmed'...
In fact, the way its written, he leaves it up to the reader to connect the two events, which we are all doing.
Hope the kid gets everything straightened out. Never too late to turn things around.
