OSU: Three storylines

OSU's Perrish Cox upends Georgia's Orson Charles at Boone Pickens Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

Perrish Cox: If OSU's senior cornerback plays all season as he did against Georgia (four pass break-ups and four tackles), he will be a first-team All-American. Now at 197 pounds (compared to the 165 he carried as a freshman in 2006), and with vastly improved coverage skills, Cox has developed into an NFL-caliber cornerback. He also popped a 74-yard kickoff return against Georgia, a big play that led to Zac Robinson's 1-yard, third-quarter touchdown run and a 17-7 Cowboy lead.

Quinn Sharp: Last season, OSU's punting game was handled by a poised senior, Matt Fodge, who captured the Ray Guy Award. Sharp, a redshirt freshman, is now the Cowboy punter, and he was excellent in the Georgia game. By averaging 50.0 yards on seven punts, he helped the Cowboys solve some field-position problems.

The tight ends: When starting tight end Jamal Mosley left the Cowboy program last week for personal reasons, sophomore Wilson Youman was promoted to the first-team job and redshirt freshman Justin Horton to a more prominent role in the rotation. Each had one catch against Georgia. In the second period, Youman's 23-yard reception gave OSU a first down at midfield. In the third quarter, Horton had an 8-yard catch at the Georgia 3-yard line.

Cox really impressed me. His pass breakups were definitely big time. He still needs a little work on his tackling technique but that will get better as the season progresses.

Sharp's punts were ridiculous! You want to talk about success? How about getting your college debut against Georgia and averaging 50 yards a punt including pinning one on the 4 yard line and rocketing another one for 61 yards!

I think even the most hardcore Cowboy fan was surprised at the Cowboy's poise, especially after the hole Georgia put them in with the initial UGA scoring drive.

If the Cowboys can maintain their focus and continue to improve each week, a BCS bowl game is very possible.

It's so great seeing how all the OSU programs are benefitting from Boone Pickens and other alumni donors largesse.

It's even better to be a Cowboy now.

What I liked seeing from this game was the underrated members of the Cowboys team making the headlines for the day. Cox did a great job against A.J. Green and finally got things going on that return. Quinn Sharp could not have done any better in his debute. Going into this game, the punter and TE positions were the two question marks on the team. Questions answered! Sharp was awesome! Antoine made some huge plays on defense that I'm sure made Richt rethink his home state Georgia recruits. We will definitely need more than our triplets to win games, and I liked seeing other guys step up! Go Pokes!

As far as I am concerned Perrish Cox shut down AJ Green, who is a very good wideout. I know Green had four catches but were any besides one when Perrish had coverage responsibility?

Cox has always been regarded as a potentially great CB but I think because Ok State's line has been so weak in years past it put a tremendous amount of pressure on the DBs and he has matured and probably gotten more confident, I'm sure being a dangerous KO return man has boosted that aspect of his game.

Now the corners can relax and not worry about always having to come up to support the run.

Oh, the tight ends looked fine, they'll be making quite a few catches in the future.
