Cowboys need big turnaround
OSU still has one advantage over others teams — the Cowboys have standout receiver Dez Bryant. Stephen Holman / Tulsa World

The Oklahoma State football team has arrived at a critical juncture of its season.
This week's Grambling State game essentially is a scrimmage, followed by two weeks of practice in advance of the Oct. 10 Big 12 opener at Texas A&M.
If substantial improvement isn't achieved, therein lies the potential for disaster.
What would qualify as a disaster?
Because of the money invested now in Cowboy football, because the preseason expectations were so great, because season-ticket sales are at an unprecedented level and because OSU is blessed with a rare collection of skill-position talent, anything shy of a 10-win season could be categorized as a bust.
Based on what was seen in the Houston and Rice games, it's not difficult to envision a four- or five-loss finish for an OSU team that a few days ago was No. 5 in the country.
The only positive resulting from Saturday's 41-24 win over Rice was that the Cowboys improved to 2-1. Rallying from a 28-3 deficit, the Owls outgained OSU 281 yards to 139 during the second half.
When time expired, a huge red flag should have been raised over Boone Pickens Stadium.
Remember, this offense was hailed by national media as perhaps the best in college football. But through three games (one-quarter of the regular season), here is the OSU report card:
The Cowboys are 49th nationally in rushing, 77th in passing, 69th in total offense, 90th in total defense and 108th in pass defense.
For the second consecutive week, OSU is No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25. The Cowboys are fortunate that the Rice game was not televised. If AP voters had seen the extent to which OSU flopped during the second half, the Cowboys might have vanished from the poll altogether.
For OSU fans, here's the good news: College football is crazy. Washington, winless last season, just beat Southern Cal. While it won't be easy for Cowboy coaches to squeeze a dramatic and immediate turnaround from their team, it is possible.
OSU still has one advantage over all other teams. OSU has Dez Bryant. Can you imagine this team without Dez Bryant?

Well, that's part of the problem, isn't it? Who's developing under Bryant, you got to throw the ball to the other receivers for them to gain confidence and to be more well rounded. From the two games i've seen Robinson looks at Dez all the way unless he goes to a TE. How many receptions do the other wideouts have???

Rhymeister, my observation, from being at the three games thus far, is that Josh Cooper is the best target besides DB. Cooper's stats are 7 receptions for 100 yards with one TD. He is second in the individual receiving stats behind Dez. Zac is too focused on Dez most times.

O State has too much talent on Offense to sputter around like a derailed train. What is wrong with a team that can't score but seven against the Rice Owls in the first quarter? It sounds like offensive coordinators to me. Osu offense is as predictable as a weak high school team.

Yes OSU has some great skill players but when you can't block it doesn't matter. Obviously the losses from last year's line and Pettigrew's blocking are killing this team. The fact they are still tinkering with the offensive line tells you they have problems.

OSU is pace to being "THE" flop of the year and 5-6 losses unless they get their offensive mojo back.
Take it to the bank:
L Missouri
L Texas
L Tech
L Oklahoma
And don't assume @ Baylor will be a "W".
NOW we'll see what kind of coach Gundy really is. That is, can he make the necessary adjustments to salvage this season.

Without Dez Bryant, the Cowboys would be toast. No doubt about it. He's the lone NFL prospect on this overrated, under-performing, lackluster OSU offense.
Can Gundy get his team motivated before the real season starts?
If OSU plays like they did for most of September, they will finish in the bottom half of the Big 12. If they perform like they did in the second half against a sick and injured Georgia squad, they may have a chance to squeeze out a few conference wins.
But, I don't see it. The players and coaches seem to be a step slower than last year. They look confused and frustrated. And as the Cowboys proved against Houston, they have no home field advantage.

Going by how things look right now OSU has its work cut out to win 4 Big XII games. They're going to have to make a determined effort just to go to a bowl, much less worry about rankings. Just press on and concentrate on the next game Pokes. Beat Grambling State and then get ready for A&M ... that's going to be a very tough game.

To "ken7" and the rest of the orange kool-aide drinking sheep...wake up already!!!
Do you really feel like OSU has played at or above expectations to-date? I'm a die hard OSU fan and no one on the FB team is above criticism, especially Gundy. He, along with the rest of the offense, has the least amount of room for excuses for their p!ss poor performances.
The knock against Gundy has always been his lack of experience and inablity to adjust. Now more than ever, the variables that add up to legitimate excuses are gone. The vast majority of the O is the same as last year yet they look like they are in a coma. So, I'll say it again...
We'll see just how good a coach Gundy really is during the remainder of this season.

Ash: I am an OSU fan and I believe what you are saying is true. The only problem is the OSU fans need to wise up. Gundy was less than mediocre when they hired him and he has never had the team ready for the beginning season. He is good at politicing to keep his job. No other alumni would put up with Gundy. That is why OSU is labeled "losers". This season is no different from the others. If the OSU alumni really love OSU, they need to clean out the athletic department beginning at the trustee level down to the graduate assistants. Get rid of the poison that infests the university and stop bad mouthing O.U.

Ash,
You are a complete idiot. I don't care if you are an OSU fan or not. There are a lot of issues regarding this team. They are fixable areas. One of the reasons OSU lost to Houston was the play of Booker. He is inexperienced as a starter. He made at least four costly mistakes. But he got better in the Rice game. The same goes for some of the other new starters. The line has two new guards that need to step up. But it comes with experience. I think the schedule will end up being tougher than most realize. But thinking they may only win 4 big twelve games? Come on.

Omega you're not a fan of OSU. How many games has OSU lost? Oh just one. As far as bad mouthing OU, the article is about OSU. OU has it's own set of problems. Remember, they got beat by a BYU team that got it handed to them at home. Sam Bradford had poor stats before he got hurt.
As far as Gundy is concerned, he's got the team going in the right direction. I believe they will finish the season strong. Something they have never done.
It takes time to build it and they are doing that. The line does miss pettigrew, he was a first round TE. They have time to get it right and they will.

Ditto on Eric. That was a pretty dumb comment considering how easy it is to verify. If you didn't watch it don't try to comment on it. Also, the answer to OSWho's problems: Fire Gumby and Holder.
