Gundy: No news on Bryant

Bryant

STILLWATER — In 25 minutes at the podium during his Monday news conference, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy was not asked one question about the status of All-American wide receiver Dez Bryant.

"There's nothing new," Gundy said later. "We've had no response. I think everybody has given up."

Bryant has been sidelined for four games and officially, indefinitely suspended since Oct. 7. Bryant was suspended from participation in games for having admittedly lied to the NCAA about a meeting he had with former NFL star Deion Sanders.

While it was OSU that suspended Bryant, he can be reinstated only by the NCAA, a university official said.

Bryant was interviewed for a third time by an NCAA investigator on Oct. 13 at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis. Bryant was accompanied by Scott Williams, OSU's associate athletic director for compliance. Williams presented the case for Bryant's reinstatement, and the Cowboy program continues to anxiously await a response from the NCAA.

Bryant is eligible to participate in practice sessions, but apparently his day-to-day involvement has been minimal.

"At some point, you'd like for (Bryant) to have a chance to finish his career by playing games here," Gundy said. "I think it is (the worst-case scenario) for Dez. I think it's eating him alive. It's difficult for him to be around here. He's having a hard time."

Does anyone have a way of contacting the NCAA to voice complaint? It would make me feel better to vent my total frustration towards this event- My new catch phrase for the NCAA is "NeverClearAboutAnything".

It really is a crime what the NCAA is doing. Is this some sort of dictatorship where they cannot be overruled? The kid has missed four games now without any word from the NCAA on what his punishment actually is or will be.

Why is this acceptable? Yes, he lied. Yes, he deserved to be punished. But to leave him and the program hanging with no word on when it will end is simply absurd.

The NCAA needs to get over themselves and let Dez play.

This needs to be addressed by the national media, but it would appear they are too busy fawning over Florida, Alabama, Texas, and USC. I've seen the NCAA hand down heavy punishments, and the World has reported on non-punishments.

But has anyone ever heard of the NCAA suspending a player with no declaration as to whether the player's eligibility is no longer in place? And has any player ever been suspended, when inappropriate relationship took place with an agent, booster, or alum, or when no "goods were received" for playing?

This whole situation is patently absurd. And what is even more absurd is that not one national media person has addressed the absurdity of the issue. This whole thing involves a player who was/is a first-team All American, who was declared to be a game-changer for his team by all national media outlets, and who will be drafted as the number one receiver into the NFL. The only reason I can come up with that this isn't being covered 24/7 by ESPN is that it didn't happen at USC, Ohio State, or Florida.

What a bunch of crap! The NCAA is being completely unfair about this whole situation. They have not formally made any kind of indication of what the punishment for his so called infraction should be. Meanwhile he is at their mercy. There should be a set punishment for the violation and it should be enforced right away. OSU should be more involved in getting a ruling, don't they have some lawyers. Maybe Dez needs to hire some? This whole NCAA ordeal has a trickle down that is surely to effect many other players, and teams in the future. It really sets a bad precident that allows the NCAA to do whatever they want and everyone just ignores it. C'mon press, c'mon football fans, c'mon OSU, let's do something about it. We need to make more noise about this.
