OSU Notebook: Mitchell's big game

Andrew Mitchell

OSU found out Wednesday that veteran right tackle Brady Bond would likely be out against Iowa State.

"It wasn't the most pleasant situation to be in," head coach Mike Gundy said.

But the Cowboys got plenty of production out of senior Andrew Mitchell, who started at guard against Georgia but had never started at tackle for OSU.

"Mitchell had worked hard the last five or six weeks and had shown some signs of being able to make plays," Gundy said.

OSU's line continued to cruise without its usual starter. The Cowboys have allowed only four sacks all season. That's tied with Louisiana-Lafayette for least in the country. Despite an injury to All-America tailback Kendall Hunter, OSU's line has helped the Cowboys rack up 196 rushing yards per game — most in the Big 12.

Gundy said Bond's status for this week's game against Texas Tech was uncertain.

National rankings: Oklahoma State rose one spot in the AP Top 25, to No. 17, after its dominant win over Iowa State on Saturday. The Cowboys remained at No. 18 in the USA Today coaches' poll.

None of OSU's final three opponents — Texas Tech, Colorado and Oklahoma — are ranked, but the Red Raiders picked up a few votes in this week's AP poll.

Bowl projections: ESPN's Mark Schlabach projects OSU to face Auburn in the Cotton Bowl. His colleague, Bruce Feldman, predicts a second consecutive trip to the Holiday Bowl for OSU, which would face Arizona. CBSSports.com and Scout.com also
project an Auburn-OSU matchup in the Cotton Bowl.

Pleased with Hunter: Gundy said in his Sunday teleconference that he didn't have an update on Hunter's pain after the tailback rushed nine times for 47 yards Saturday in his first extensive action since injuring his foot against Houston.

Gundy said doctors didn't update him on how Hunter felt after the game and Hunter didn't look as strong as he did last year when he led the conference in rushing.

"But he was able to compete," Gundy said. "He gave us something. He made a few plays."

Last year in Lubbock: Texas Tech dominated OSU in the teams' last meeting, a 56-20 blowout at Lubbock. The Red Raiders' passing attack racked up 516 yards and seven touchdowns. OSU fell behind 35-14 early in the second half to then-No.2 Texas Tech and never recovered.

That loss dropped the Cowboys out of the top 10.
