STILLWATER — Oklahoma State fields the youngest basketball team (average scholarship player age: 19 years, 11 months, 25 days) in the Big 12.

The Cowboys played like it during stretches of an exhibition finale Tuesday night, but got big performances from James Anderson and Matt Pilgrim to post a 97-55 victory over Dillard University, an NAIA school from New Orleans.

Anderson finished with 28 points and Pilgrim produced 18 points and 12 rebounds. They combined to score 23 of OSU's first 30 second-half points and then watched from the bench as their teammates finished the job. Anderson left the game with 9:38 left and Pilgrim took a seat with 8:00 remaining.

Anderson called Pilgrim a "monster" and said the Kentucky transfer "tries to get every rebound and, if not get it, then get his hands on it. He's big and physical and something our team missed last year."

Dillard cut a 22-point halftime deficit to 14 points before Anderson and Pilgrim transformed the exhibition into a runaway.

"We know it's still early," Anderson said, indicating that returning players and newcomers are still trying to get a feel for each other.

"We don't want to be great right now. We want to be great in March or April."

Second-year OSU coach Travis Ford said his team was better than it was in an exhibition opener against Central Oklahoma. The Cowboys committed 27 turnovers in that game, but whittled the turnover number down to 15 against a Dillard team coached by Ford's former roommate at Kentucky, Dale Brown.

Freshman guards Ray Penn and Reger Dowell scored 10 points each on a night when three injured Cowboys — Keiton Page (ankle), Teeng Akol (wrist) and Nick Sidorakis (patellar tendon) — watched from the bench. Ford said he hopes Page can play in the regular season opener 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Seattle at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

OSU improved to 46-4 all-time in exhibition games, including 41-1 since the 1989-90 season. The Cowboys have won 19 consecutive exhibitions since a 96-95 loss to Athletes First in 2000.

Pilgrim is going to be a huge asset for our team, exactly what we needed. If he can keep out of foul trouble, especially in conference play, we are going to be very, very good. Moses will be able to play more of his natural position. If we can get some good point guard play out of Penn, then watch out, Big 12.

Thanks, Calipari. You'll live to regret giving Pilgrim away.
