OSU Notebook: Quarterback situation

Quarterback stability has been a staple of coach Mike Leach's Texas Tech teams, but the Red Raiders have scrambled this season.

Junior Taylor Potts was the starter in six games. Junior Steven Sheffield started in Tech's 66-14 rout of Kansas State and 31-10 victory at Nebraska, but sustained a fractured foot during the second half of the Nebraska game. The injury required surgery. Red Raider freshman Seth Doege started in a 42-21 conquest of Kansas, but was replaced by Potts during the second half.

So, who starts on Saturday, when Texas Tech plays at Oklahoma State? According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, it appears that Potts will quarterback the Red Raiders. The Avalanche-Journal reported that Sheffield remains hobbled and barely participated during Tuesday's practice, and that Doege (pronounced DAY-gie) did not take any snaps during the team period.

Potts has completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,221 yards and 15 touchdowns, but has been intercepted nine times. Nine Red Raider players have at least 20 receptions this season, and, as usual, Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in passing at 400.4 yards per game. Kansas is No. 2 at 303.8.

The series: The Red Raiders and Oklahoma State meet for the 37th time. Texas Tech has an overall series lead of 21-12-3, but the Cowboys have a 9-8-1 edge in games played in Stillwater.

In 13 meetings since the Big 12 was formed, Tech and OSU have combined for a total of 784 points.

For the second consecutive season, the Tech-OSU game is televised by ABC in prime time. Saturday's 7 p.m. game is carried by KTUL channel 8.

Quick-strike Tech: This season, the Red Raiders have had 11 scoring possessions that consumed less than one minute.

Over its last six games, Texas Tech has scored points on 24 of its 27 red-zone possessions. All 24 scores were touchdowns.

The Red Raider defense: Before visiting Texas Tech on Oct. 31, Kansas was No. 5 nationally in total offense. In a 21-point loss, the Jayhawks mustered only 258 total yards. Texas Tech end Brandon Sharpe had 2 1/2 of his team's six sacks and now has a season total of 10 1/2.
