SANTA CLARA, Calif. Oklahoma State advanced to the second round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament, edging Southern California 5-4 on penalty kicks on Friday night at Santa Clara, Calif.

OSU won when goalkeeper Adrianna Franch scored the fifth goal in penalty kicks, then knocked away a shot by USC's Carly Butcher.

Elizabeth DeLozier, Bridget Miller, Whitney Wernimont and Carson Michalowski also scored on penalty kicks for OSU.

The Cowgirls, who improved to 16-7 with the win, will play fourth-seeded host Santa Clara (14-6-1) at 6 p.m. Sunday in the second round.

After a scoreless regulation and two extra periods, the Trojans (12-7-2) took a 2-1 lead in penalty kicks before Franch registered a save.

The teams then traded goals until Franch delivered the game-winning kick and save.

Last year the Cowgirls lost games on penalty kicks. This year they come up with a penalty-kick win somewhere where USC probably had more of the home field advantage. Go Cowgirls !
