Pep with each step

Before the Texas Tech game on Saturday, Oklahoma State fans hug the curbs of Hester Street to cheer for and catch a glimpse of the Cowboy football team during "The Walk" to Boone Pickens Stadium. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

STILLWATER — In addition to having two Bedlam victories included in his Oklahoma State legacy, Les Miles had a good idea in 2001.

Before his first season as the OSU football coach, Miles decided his team would not be bused to the stadium before home games. Instead, the Cowboys would walk from the Student Union. It would be a three-block stroll, traveling north on Hester Street.

"Coach Miles wanted to get the fans involved. Going by bus was unemotional," recalls Mack Butler, who was Miles' director of football operations in 2001-04 and returned this year in the same position for Mike Gundy.

For that first team walk — which occurred on Sept. 8, 2001, and preceded a 30-23 OSU victory over Louisiana Tech — about 2,000 fans lined Hester Street.

"It might have been two or three deep at the start, but it thinned out as we traveled the path down Hester," Butler said.

Flash forward to Sept. 5, 2009 — the date Oklahoma State christened completely renovated Boone Pickens Stadium by beating Georgia. The team walk has become known as "The Walk," and before the Georgia game an estimated 15,000-20,000 fans gathered along the Hester Street curbs. There were also 15,000-20,000 for The Walk preceding the Oct. 31 Texas matchup.

For most games, about 10,000 fans gather for the event. OSU's final walk of the season is set for 4:15 p.m. Thursday. At 6:30, in an ESPN-televised Big 12 game, the 12th-ranked Cowboys will host Colorado.

"We're nothing without our fans," OSU senior cornerback Perrish Cox said. "To see all those people out there, cheering for us — it gives us energy. It really pumps us up."

Gundy quarterbacked the Cowboys from 1986-89, was Miles' offensive coordinator from 2001-04, and now is in his fifth season as the head man.

"When I played here, we just came over on a bus and they'd drop us off," Gundy said. "There was nobody here. We had maybe the best player ever in college football (Barry Sanders), and there was nobody here."

The Walk is essentially a pep rally. The Cowboy marching band and spirit-squad members parade down Hester. The trailing players and coaches are showered with encouragement. Some are embraced by relatives and friends. Visually, it's a sea of orange.

"Here I am, 62 years old, and it energizes me. It's a happening," said Dale Patterson, OSU's assistant director of football operations. "You arrive at the stadium and think, 'That was a heck of a walk.'

"I'll tell you what else The Walk has done — it has really helped increase the tailgating here. People come early. It has added to the whole game-day atmosphere."

University officials acknowledge that the fans' response to The Walk has resulted in a burgeoning tailgate culture. This season, an estimated 20,000-30,000 fans participate in tailgating activities.

"In 1978, we had no tailgate culture. It didn't exist," said Brian Reed, a Guymon resident and a '78 OSU graduate. "Ten years ago, it was just getting started. Now everybody gets here early. Look around. Tailgating is a big thing here now, and The Walk is a big part of it. The Walk brought electricity to this place."

As he spoke, Reed presided over his own tailgate party in the parking lot immediately south of the stadium. He grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for a group of about 30 fans.

Jerry King of Dallas attends every OSU home game because his son, Jarid King, is a Cowboy walk-on defensive tackle. Jerry King says The Walk and tailgating are as much a part of the game-day experience as the game itself.

"Game day always starts at the pancake house here in Stillwater, and then you work up to The Walk and the game," King said. "The Walk shows the players that we're here to support them."

Said Noble Sokolosky, an Owasso attorney and the father of OSU special-teams star Taylor Sokolosky: "A few years ago, you could come for The Walk and it would be easy to get a good spot. Now, you'd better be here early or you'll be behind a lot of people. This tradition will continue to grow as the team continues to win."

After spending four seasons with Miles at LSU, Butler returned to the Oklahoma State staff this year. He says he was pleased to see the growth of The Walk.

"It now is a priority. The fans line up early and they want to be a part of it," Butler said. "It has become a great tradition for Oklahoma State. It will be here forever. If you can't get your blood going during The Walk, you can't get your blood going."

Lucky Les the uber-dork, can't wear a hat.
Called out all the "suckers", but didn't call 'em "FAT!"

Miles was a good coach. That's obvious. We were fortunate to have him while we had him. Having Gundy work for Coach Miles as offensive coordinator and then become head coach was probably the best possible way for things to unfold for OSU.

"thats the only good thing Les Miles did for OSU..."

And beat OU in back-to-back years.
And guided OSU to its first 8 win season in quite some time.
And took OSU to bowl games three years in a row.

But that's all.

Les Miles recognized a good thing when he saw it. I live in Atlanta and went to see the Cowboys play Southern Miss. in Hattiesburg. They have a thing called the Eagle Walk. Practically the whole town gets involved. Police/Fire department etc. It really did pump up the fans. That Thursday night the Cowboys laid an egg and were beaten soundly by USM. But the next home game for the cowboys Miles started the Cowboy walk. Great thing for us.
Thanks Les Miles.

Les Miles was about as classless as you can get, it suits him to be at LSU with their obnoxious fans. I'm sure Les didn't come up with the idea, someone else suggested it to him. Wow, they beat Oklahoma 2 years back to back? C'mon, what kind of an accomplishment is that? Why don't you cite beating any other team back-to-back?

Les Miles also ran a team full of thugs and criminals that Gundy had to go clean up. I think "the walk" is just fine, but giving Les Miles credit for anything other than making OSU cringe when he spoke is absurd.

jhpoke, I don't doubt Miles got the idea from another school (he had to), maybe even USM, however, he did not coordinate The Walk in less than 2 weeks for the next home game. The effort was coordinated over the summer as he and the staff made arrangements to move the team hotel from the Best Western to the Student Union so they COULD do the walk.

Miles was a good coach...a little bit full of himself though. Looking at the LSU program it can be seen that he is not a great coach. Once all of Saban's recruits graduated it went downhill from its championship team. Gundy has the makings of a great coach and is leading the Cowboys better than I thought he would or gave him credit for even last year. He has built a team to be reckoned with after Les left him with a team full of misfits. Gundy is a class act and it is no wonder the walk as well as the program has gotten better under his care.

I didn't like the way Les left OSU, from various things I've heard his head and heart weren't in the job toward the very end when he was interviewing with LSU and maybe others.

That being said I'm very thankful for what Les has done; OSU was terrible before he got on. He gave us 8 and 9 win seasons. Aside from beating a top team in the nation (OU) back to back years, we beat Nebraska for the first time in decades. Gundy has done a great job continuing the success. When I see the program pre-Miles and look at it now, I cannot help but think Miles had something to do with it.

The Walk is a great tradition; he may have gotten the idea from somewhere else, but I'm pretty sure it was instituted before any games. I remember the Pep Rally where he spoke to the crowd about this new tradition before the team played any games.

Ya, brownie cow, he called 'em out and walked the walked twice, but the 3rd time he took a severe whuppin' and limped back to Stilllllllwater with a big ol 52-9 bruise on his worth-LES rear. I can still see Tommie Harris doing jumping jacks after a goal line stand and Mike Stoops with that fist cocked saying "Want some more of this, Miles" ..........hee hee

Coweta, it was a HUGE accomplishment both because of what OU was ranked at the time and because they are the in-state rival.

Hold onto that memory, Suea. Hold it tight and fall soundly asleep. We know that memories are all you have to grasp onto these days.

coweta and wwjd- couldn't agree more with your comments. Les is an arrogant, pos in my opinion. He expected everyone to bow down to him, wouldn't greet his fans or sign autographs or let the fans take pictures.....Im glad he's gone!
