OSU Football Notebook: Big man on campus

OSU's Perrish Cox recovers a Colorado fumble after the ball was stripped by Lucien Antoine and Patrick Lavine from CU's Demetrius Sumler in the fourth quarter against the Buffs on Thursday. Cox, who leads the nation in passes defended, was named by some teammates as the team's MVP. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

Maybe the initials MVP stand for Most Valuable Perrish.

A few Oklahoma State football players were asked to identify a team MVP during a Monday press function. Fullback Bryant Ward and center Andrew Lewis nominated cornerback and return man Perrish Cox.

"It just seems like he has stepped it up so much," Lewis said. "This year he has played tons of reps. He has done a great job at cornerback defending the pass and run. I think he has really just been a good influence on all of our players this year."

Cox expressed surprise when told that teammates viewed him as an MVP.

"We've got a lot of guys who could be up for that award," he said. "For them to say me, that's terrific."

Cox leads the nation in passes defended and is the Big 12's career kickoff return leader. Cox said his goal was to have his best year as a senior, and he believes he has done that.

Making the grade: Ten OSU players were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team, including Lewis, who is first-team academic all-league for the second consecutive season.

Joining Lewis on the first team were senior Mark Chestnut, junior Shane Jarka, sophomore Victor Johnson and freshmen Lane Taylor and Brodrick Brown. OSU's six first-team honorees are its most since eight in 2006.

Earning second-team honors were juniors Kendall Hunter and Chris Donaldson, plus sophomore Jamie Blatnick and freshman Cooper Bassett. Blatnick and Jarka are repeat selections.

As for anyone saying Bob Stoops should go, think I'd get opinions from guys like S. Bradford, J. Gresham, or G. McCoy first........as for Saturday.....Sooners 65-2 at home under Stoops.......make it 65-3....... Pokes win a defensive struggle 13-10
