NORMAN — Oklahoma All-America tight end Jermaine Gresham is out for the season with a knee injury, Sooners coach Bob Stoops said this afternoon after practice.

Gresham skipped a chance to be a probable first-round pick in the NFL draft last April to return for his senior season at OU.

"Just unfortunate that he comes back and is not able to continue to participate," Stoops said. "So we really feel for him."

During his weekly media conference this afternoon, Stoops said Gresham had three MRI examinations on his right knee in an attempt to discover the extent of the injury, which occurred in practice last week.

Today, Gresham had exploratory surgery in an effort to determine how much damage his knee had sustained.

Stoops said the surgery revealed cartilage damage that will require a five-month rehabilitation, but Gresham's NFL future is intact. Multiple NFL draft projections had the 6-foot-6, 258-pound pass-catcher listed as a first-round choice before he decided to return for his final season at OU.

"For his sake, the rest of the knee looks good, and this is something that heals really well," Stoops said. "So for his long-range future, he'll be fine." Gresham, who was unavailable for comment, was Oklahoma's top returning receiver from last season. He had 950 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

"We've got to continue to move forward. It changes the complexion of what we do a little bit, but we'll work through that," Stoops said.

OU was without two All-Americans by the end of a 14-13 loss Saturday to BYU. Quarterback Sam Bradford sustained a shoulder injury late in the first half.

Stoops said today that the status of Bradford's injury would remain unchanged. It was announced Monday that Bradford is out 2-4 weeks with a separated shoulder.

"That's what we anticipate and everything else just depends on soreness and how he heals," Stoops said. "As everyone knows, all people heal differently, and all injuries are different. So we'll just have to see as time goes how that will heal and how that will improve.

"He's talked to a number of other quarterbacks who have had this injury and come back and have been fine once they've come back and thrown the football and continued with their careers. We know of many NFL guys who have gone through this, and he personally has spoken with Eli Manning and Eli told him he was throwing the ball in 10 days and played two weeks later. That was the year they went on to win the Super Bowl. So we'll just see where that goes."
