Jones steps into spotlight: OU QB is full of confidence

OU quarterback Landry Jones will make his first start as a Sooner against Idaho State on Saturday as he takes over for the injured Sam Bradford. STEPHEN PINGRY/Tulsa World

NORMAN — Whether because Sam Bradford had just suffered a ghastly-looking injury, or the possibility of a shocking loss was creeping into some heads, Oklahoma's locker room at halftime last Saturday resembled a "morgue," in the word of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson.

There was but one live Sooner — the redshirt freshman about to take his first college snap in place of the Heisman Trophy-winning starter, and in front of 75,437 fans and a national television audience.

"Landry (Jones) was the only guy in the locker room that was talking," Wilson said. "He was picking us up. He had a look in his eye."

Jones tried saving OU's season-opener. He just came up a point short.

Maybe he'll have better luck saving the Sooners' season, at least until Bradford is able to return from his separated shoulder. To a man, the Sooners think he can help do that. Starting with the man himself.

"This position requires you to have a lot of confidence and carry yourself with a look in your eye and determination and all that stuff," Jones said Monday after his first practice as OU's starting quarterback.

Jones' confidence is born of natural gifts. He stands 6-foot-4, weighs 214 pounds, and owns a right arm fitting of that physical stature.

"I'd say his strong point is he's got a cannon," tight end Trent Ratterree said.

Jones showed it off right before reporting to OU in January 2008. Competing in the Under Armour High School All-American Game skills challenge,
he flipped the ball in his hands a couple times, licked his right thumb, stutter-stepped forward and launched a 70-yard missile.

If Sooner fans get ahold of that video, and the four-minute YouTube montage showcasing Jones' Parade All-American career at Artesia (N.M.) High, their post-BYU moods should brighten. It isn't just the posts, fades, streaks and seams Jones throws out of Artesia's shotgun spread. It's what happens on a zone read play, when he breaks four tackles in his backfield, a fifth at the line of scrimmage, and heads into open field for 35 yards.

Then there's the time he rolls right, sticks his left arm into the face mask of an oncoming defender to drop him, turns upfield, leaps over the low body-block attempt of another defender, lands and scores.

And the play where a big old lineman grabs him around the waist and flings him completely around but not down. Jones, facing forward again and with the lineman hanging on for the ride, hoists a pass 25 yards into the end zone for a touchdown.

It's quite a package, and it has at least one Sooner pretty excited to see how it will manifest itself Saturday night against Idaho State.

"With Landry, it only opens the book to more dangerous things we can do," said offensive lineman Jarvis Jones. "He's a pocket quarterback, but he also has feet to run. So I see some good in it."

This isn't to suggest the Sooners are scrapping their offense. It's much more likely they'll scale things back.

"With (Jones') limited experiences, we'll be careful with how much we do," coach Bob Stoops said. "We'll be able to do enough to hopefully keep people off balance and execute.

"But obviously what Sam's able to handle over three or four years is further along. We'll have to be smart about what we're asking (Jones) to do."

Jones went 6-of-12 for 51 yards against BYU, with no touchdowns but no interceptions either. And if he didn't do quite enough to win the game

"He gave us a chance to win," Wilson said. "I think our kids gained confidence by the way he played Saturday."

By the way he played, and the way he led.

"He was real confident. He showed a lot of poise," said offensive captain Brody Eldridge. "If he was nervous, he did a great job hiding it. He was ready to go. He came out there, had an attitude and everything."

"He said some of the things Sam would say," running back DeMarco Murray noticed.

Even in that morgue, before his first play as a Sooner.

"He called up the team huddle and said, 'Let's go! Let's win this!' " said wide receiver Ryan Broyles. "He was more vocal than I've ever seen him. He's got confidence in himself, and we sure do. We're behind him."

LANDRY JONES PROFILE

Position: Quarterback

Height: 6-foot-4

Weight: 216 pounds

High School: Artesia (N.M.)

Fast facts: Named after legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry. Threw for 7,282 yards and 89 touchdowns his last two years at Artesia, helping his team win back-to-back state championships. His reaction to Sam Bradford's injury last Saturday night: "At first, I didn't even realize I was going in. I was like, 'Ooh, Sam's gonna be hurt.' And then the second thought went through my mind: 'Wow, I'd better get myself ready to play.' " Once told an Albuquerque TV station: "You can throw the ball through a barn door, but if you can't put it on the knob, your receiver is not going to catch it."

Landry is "the real deal". He can play and knows the system. All he needs is an O-line to do its job and Kevin Wilson to do his job.
Sooners CAN win the remaining games with the right attitude and a little bit of Sooner Magic. We've gone through this before!

I hate bandwagon fans!!! what are you thinking when you say fire Stoops! Do you want John Blake, Gary Gibbs, Howard Schnellenberger back and the wonder 90's that treated the Sooners so well? you my friends are not true Sooner fans. So go back and cheer for your local high school...

Idiots! If you are so talented and knowledgeable about the game of football, you would would have Stoops' job or Wilson's job. Bottom line, you know nothing. Whether the O-line becomes great or not, it won't be Wilson's or Stoops' fault....the players have to play and make the plays and execute.

I'm a TU fan first and foremost, but I think OU can rebound from this. The key is going to be the O line - it HAS to jell, it HAS to come together and play together to give Landry protection and time.

I've been reviewing the tape of TU's win over Tulane and I was mystified by that 4th down trick play where the entire O line doesn't move. Trick plays won't beat OU. OU may or may not be in a down year - but they have too many superb athletes compared to TU's limited resources. TU will have to play a near-perfect game on all aspects of the game just to have a chance against the Sooner squad in a supposed "down" year.

Has anyone at the Tulsa World thought to ask Mr. Landry T. Jones what on earth he was thinking when he showed up in public with that partial moustache? Or better yet what he thought throwing a ball at the ground on third down would accomplish?

It's called "Journalism" and you get it up tuh the local colledge!

O-line lost that one boys. Stuff happens, gotta be ready. Texas should have a good time in Oct. Okie State will be tough as they smell blood in the water.

First of all, firing Stoops will accomplish nothing. I agree with rjones that I don't want to go back to the way things were in the 90's. Potentially, three losses isn't exactly a bad season. Look at Stoops first season. No one was crying to fire him then.

Second, Landry Jones is going to do fine. He will have two games to get his feet wet before a tough game game at Miami. Plus, he has a full week of practice as the #1 quarterback instead of Sam's backup. This is the time he needs to gel with his o-line and get OU back in the win column.

Last years' experienced o-line had repeated procedure calls against them & this years' squad is continuing that legacy as are the d-backs who can't play coverage when it's time to make a game deciding play....

This years' players are just like last years' & the years' before, it's as if when you put on that crimson & cream jersey it goes into your blood and you can't follow the snap count or defend the pass on a third or fourth down in the fourth quarter....

ESPN's Andre Ware said OU would lose 4 games. The Sooner homers were outraged. Mr. Ware is probably correct.

Texas will hammer you OU homers. Go Texas. Kick "Little Game Bob's" rear again.
$5,000,0000 a year for this. Any game that has rally mattered he get his rear kicked.

Longhorns, Jayhawks, Cornhuskers, Red Raiders & a Hurricane here & there are circling the Sooners, ready to add a victory over the Sooners to this years' win total....

Tulsa 24 OU 13

Too bad OSU, your gonna be facing a wounded animal in November with nothing to lose. OU's motivation will be to ruin the Cowboys greatest season ever....or get a better bowl bid than the Las Vegas Bowl....

First off, if we could just fire Stoops we could hire Pete Carrol or Urban Meyer. Either of those two would kill to coach in Norman.

And secondly, Andre Ware attended the University of Houston ... nufff said.

All that the BYU games shows is that Stoops is over rated, over paid and only has a couple of players that we can really count on!

With an offensive line that leaks like a sieve, Jones will be on the injured list in no time. Then who will take his place?

I guess Pete Carrol is overrated also since USC loses a game to someone that they should slaughter once about every year. OU had one bad game without their QB for a half and a bunch of new starters on the offense.

There was a time when Oklahoma reloaded instead of rebuilt....

A time the only players switching positions was QB's becoming DB's or FB's becoming LB's, never TE's becoming OL or RB's becoming unused WR's....

OU can't recruit offensive linemen ???? Why not ???? Too bad OU doesn't have someone who can recruit & coach offensive linemen as well as recognize OL talent....Or offensive talent for that matter, right now we have a RB whose change of direction is from standing up to falling down, another RB who is like an old workhorse, all beat up & not what he used to be. SAM better take a good look at his RB's because behind that OL that is his future....

Truth is, the Sooners weren't doing all that well BEFORE Sam's injury either, were they? I'm always uncomfortable when so much pre-season hype is in the air. It seldom leads to high level performance.

I say get over it. Landry will be the QB for the immediate future. He has everything to win and nothing to loose by trying to be his best. Lets get behind him.

As for firing Stoops, that's just wierd. Media exagerated hype and Oklahoma invincibility expectations are the bane his work, not the description.

The only legitimate replacement for Stoops would be Barry, and he's not coming back. You people settle down.
