OU's Stoops pleased with progress

NORMAN — Bob Stoops, encouraged by Oklahoma’s 64-0 shutout of Idaho State on Saturday night, remained upbeat during his Big 12 teleconference appearance this morning.

“I realize we’ve got tougher opponents coming,” he said of the Big Sky Conference Bengals. “But in the end, I was pleased with our improvement, specifically, in fundamentals and some discipline.”

An OU offense that committed 10 penalties in a 14-13 season-opening loss to BYU committed just two infractions Saturday night — false starts by tackle Jarvis Jones and tight end Trent Ratterree. And while the flags generally destroyed any kind of rhythm the offense hoped to attain in the opener, Saturday’s penalties were mere speed bumps. The Sooners shook off both false starts and ended both drives with touchdowns.

The Sooners weren’t perfect. They fumbled four times and lost one, after backup quarterback John Nimmo was sacked late in the game. Wide receivers continued to drop passes. Also, Dominique Franks’ 65-yard punt return for a touchdown was nullified by a block-in-the-back penalty.

Still, Stoops sounded satisfied with the effort both during the game and in practices leading up to Saturday.

“I thought they did a good job, really, through the week,” Stoops said this morning. “I just felt like our guys really worked hard last week trying to make some corrections.”

Like the local H.S. team beating down the local Junior High squad....

Well this week your 6A Sooners are going to face a pretty stout 3A squad on the verge of one of the best in their class....

Last week the 5A Cowboyz were roughed up by that 4A pack of Cougars....
