Is OU scared of Miami offense?

OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables will lead his unit against a strong Miami offense in two weeks. Stephen Pingry / Tulsa World

In its first two games, Miami looked good. Scary good.

OK, maybe not scary.

"You don't go anywhere scared, 'Oh no, what are we gonna do?' " Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Sunday. "I've never been part of a game or a team or a scheme or a player or a defense that's been part of that."

In Venables' early estimation, the No. 9 Hurricanes (2-0) — who host No. 10 Oklahoma on Oct. 3 at Land Shark Stadium — have an offense that's not necessarily scary, but it is good.

"Very good," Venables said. "Very good skill, good quarterback, good line, good backs, good schemes. Playing very efficiently. Not very many negative plays, good decision-making by the quarterback. Good football team."

The 10th-ranked Sooners (2-1), winners over Idaho State 64-0 and Tulsa 45-0, seemed to have righted a ship that looked sunk in a 14-13 opening loss to BYU. Both victories looked, at times, effortless.

The OU defense yielded hardly an inch, and the offense — quarterbacked by freshman backup Landry Jones — scored almost at will.

Although OU has two weeks to prepare while the 'Canes visit No. 11 Virginia Tech this Saturday, the apparent ease with which the Sooners have been winning since the BYU disaster is expected to cease — particularly for the OU defense.

Miami quarterback Jacory Harris, a sophomore, threw 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.

He passed for just 1,195 yards, with a season-high of 194. So far this year, Harris has torched Florida State (the same Florida State that lit up BYU Saturday in Provo) for 383 yards and Georgia Tech for 270. Miami ranks eighth nationally in passing yards per game (328).

"I think it grabs (OU players') attention: 'Hey, I'd better be on top of my game and prepare extremely hard and really try to lock in on what they like to do,' things of that nature," Venables said.

Back-to-back shutouts — especially against Tulsa — "gave us a little confidence boost," said defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

"It's not easy to do. It took a lot of preparation. But going into a game like Miami, we have to put in even more preparation to get ready for them."

The SHARE button is broken. I wanted to post this on my facebook and twitter.

And yes, we probably have good reason to be CONCERNED but not scared.

As the man said, concerned but not scared. Miami is pretty darned good. But as anyone can see, no team is unbeatable. Ask USC. Ask OU. Texas had trouble with Wyoming but Colorado did not. The football bounces in many ways.

With Veneables as the defensive coordinator the Sooners should be scared every game. His schemes stink and how many times have opposing teams thrown over the defensive backs for major yardage? Venables needs to go.

"the Sooners seem to have righted a ship...." this seems a little premature to me. Beating Tulsa and Idaho Stats, hardly makes everything right. We still have many issues to deal with. Primarily some coaching issues. We'll be able to tell more AFTER the Miami game. BOOMER SOONER!

Tulsa & Idaho St. were scared of the Sooners but the Miami players won't be....

Another big game opponent for OU, I wonder what will happen....All I know is that it'll another good reason to fire up the grill & get crazy about a football game!!!!

Paul Johnson at G Tech does a great job but totally different types of athletes that they have compared to OU/Miami type kids. Tech had no pass rush at all during that entire game... that will probably change when OU comes to town.

I just hope Miami beats up on VT. They need to be undefeated and seething with confidence when we show up. I say that because I know our kids will be showing up ready to play and it'll only make for a better game. If Miami does beat VT the media is going to be all over them. We won't have a chance according to them.....watch.

If the defense comes ready to play we should be good for the win. Can't expect interceptions in the red zone everytime though. Need a lot more 3 and outs.

BOOMER!!

"the Sooners seem to have righted a ship...." Does seem premature when asking if they're ready to re-enter the national championship picture. That's why we used the word "seem" instead of "undoubtedly".

And we're talking about a team that couldn't remember the snap count against BYU. (They're still having problems catching the football.) So using that game as a reference point, I'd say the ship seems righted.

It'll be interesting to see how they respond to their first true road test.

Say what you want, Outstanding Defenses ALLWAYS shut down Outstanding Offenses.

This weekend is a "kill'em all and let god sort them out" game.

OU should be proud and also pumped with their last two victories. They need to go down there and make a statement. A positive statement.

Time for the Sooners to put a give Miami another reality check, if VT does not do the job first.

You should be scared, real scared, without creative blitz packages and shut down corners you should be scared for the game will show the real problems with the Sooners inability to win big games. NO DEFENSE!!!

Miami is good and our D better step it up even more. Their receivers are big and athletic so it should be interesting. Let's hope they beat Va Tech so it will be an even bigger win for the Sooners!

Grambling State. please. They have a phenomenal band. Id go (except orange makes me puke)just to watch that. and the pokes to choke. OU will do just fine, Miami has speed, but I think our D line and corners are leaps and bounds to a shut down of the Miami thug club.

OU is used to playing teams that are scared of them which makes their defense more effective. The good Miami teams feared noone.
Miami has more team speed. Their running defense is not as good as OU but OU can't run very well. Murry and Brown have never been that good. OU had better be able to defend the deep pass and they have always had trouble with that. It will be close but Miami by 10.
