Stoops discusses Bradford's availability
OU's Sam Bradford stands on the sideline of the BYU game with coach Bob Stoops after injuring his shoulder. STEPHEN PINGRY/Tulsa World
By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer

NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops swears he's not "trying to be coy," but during his weekly press luncheon, he was having nothing to do with questions about quarterback Sam Bradford.
"I just don't want Sam to have to deal with the pressure of everybody's expectations. It's just not fair," Stoops said. "The bottom line is it'll be day-to-day as he improves.
"I'm not gonna detail day-to-day."
Stoops talked at length about Miami, not having tight end Jermaine Gresham, Ryan Broyles and Brandon Caleb, the team's offensive tempo, defensive shortcomings against Tulsa and improved special teams play. But his lips were sealed when questions were asked about the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and his separated shoulder.
Such as, does he have a formula in place for game week in determining when the starting quarterback needs to be getting the majority of the first-string reps?
"It's not game week," he said. "You can ask me that next week. Right now, this is where we're at."
Or will he need to know by Monday or Tuesday next week whether Bradford is healthy enough to start practicing, or can Bradford step in with a short week's practice?
"I'll deal with that next week," he said. "Good try, though. I'll have a different answer for you next week."
Or whether Landry Jones needs to be getting a bulk of the first-string game preparation snaps, or will there be the possibility that both quarterbacks could play?
"Of course (to Jones getting reps)," Stoops said. "He's doing great right now. We had a great practice yesterday."
After practice on Monday, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and wide receiver Ryan Broyles each revealed that Bradford had begun practicing, suiting up and going through drills, albeit with short throws only.
"I'm a little disappointed our players had so much to say," Stoops said. "Not that we're at all trying to be coy or anything that's behind the scenes.
"I'm sure as he goes forward, they'll give him more and more to do as the days come, and we'll just see how he handles it. It's just too early to speculate. I'm not gonna get into the speculation. Once he's comfortable and ready to play, I'll have something to say. Until then, I'm just not gonna deal with it every day and don't want our players giving percentages or he did this much or didn't do that much. Then everyone gets to determine, 'Well, that's enough to play,' or, 'That isn't enough to play.' I just don't want to do it. So I'm gonna choose not to."

Well, since Kevin Wilson isn't a player...maybe Stoops should have told the team not to say a word about Bradford. I can see why he'd be disappointed if he hadn't told his players to hush up.

Let Landry Jones give it a shot. I'm not even thinking about Sam.

I have been more than impressed with the play of Landry. He has stepped up better than anyone would have guessed. However, I feel it is foolish if anyone thinks we are better with him instead of Sam. He still makes plenty of freshman mental mistakes, and certainly can't read defenses as well or as quickly as Sam. I hope Sam returns to full practice so the rest of the team can get into rhythm with him. Look forward to seeing Landry full time next season.

nah, just not an ou fan....
ESPECIALLY not a bob stoops fan....
he got under my skin from day one and i've loved seeing him find reasons for the last few bowl games and various other losses that pointed away from his inability to handle the pressure....
by the way, go huskers!!
it's been a long few years for me there too!
i do miss tom osborne!

Everyone is going to far with this. Miami is an excellent team but OU's defense is stout and I think will do fine against the 'canes. Sam is a great quarterback but he may not have is timing down with these rcvrs like Landry does so far. And as for HICK if you think Texas is that good this year maybe you should actually watch a game. Wyoming beat them up in the first half and they had to escape a rebuilt Texas Tech team? OSU can defend my grandma up the middle. I'll line up OU against them anyday either quarterback...

Who needs Sam Bradford, when you’ve got Landry Jones and his Mustache. That thing needs its own website, it’s that popular.

Why don't Sooner fans delay chest pumping until AFTER they have played (and beaten) a BCS conference team? You are delusional if you think the Sooners can beat either Miami or Texas, regardless of who's under center.
Big whoop, you beat a FCS team (1-AA) and Tulsa.

Why won't the press just leave this alone and realize that Bradford is a wait-and-see situation. Hounding Stoops about whether he will play is ridiculous and a waste of time. As soon as Stoops knows Bradford's status do the press think he's just not going to tell anyone?????

Bobbies press conferences are painful exercises in escape and illusion. The monotone arrogance makes me want to puke as well. Get ready Bobby, there is a Hurricane in the forecast, I suggest you have your athletes better prepared than you did against BYU.

I notice that you like to have your say on all OU articles. However, other than writing about Miami's unbeatable team and talking smack about OU's "poor" defense, I haven't read a comment that tells me which team you actually support.
Are you an OSU Cowboy fan? Yes or no!
Now, for more important matters: It was great to see the emergence of Caleb in last Saturday's game. The Sooner offense will need to have him join Broyles in having great games in Miami. It would also be great to see Madu breakout in that game as well. With OU's strong defense, the Sooners have a great chance to beat the Hurricane-- a task that is never easy in Miami.

How come none of the Sooners acknowledge ol Texan Deep in the Dumps ??? ......heck, guys, he was chest pumping and got delusional about the Whinehorns bringing home the national crown in baseball from Omaha......shouldn't we pay more attention to him???..........hee hee

Oklahoma-
Of all articles I've read in any publication I've never been pressed with that question, that is that pesky little dilemma-OU or OSU???, so my responses to the Tulsa World articles have been limited to the subject matter. Oh, almost forgot your answer, no!

So, are you simply anti-OU?
BTW: Miami flopped yesterday.
