Offensive material for OU

OU's DeMarco Murray (center) tries to run through Miami's Jared Campbell (left) and Colin McCarthy during Saturday's loss. Some labeled the Sooners' play-calling during the game as "too conservative." STEPHEN PINGRY / Tulsa World

NORMAN — Want Kevin Wilson's scalp? You'll have to go through Bob Stoops to get it.

After practice Monday, the Oklahoma head coach defended his offensive coordinator for all the criticism raining down on Wilson from church lobbies, talk radio, message boards and water coolers since the Sooners' 21-20 loss at Miami on Saturday.

"That's ridiculous," Stoops said. "I can't even believe — then again, that's a lot of people who, that's their opinions. We have one of those jobs that everybody knows how to do. So you take it with a grain of salt. I don't pay any attention to it."

Wilson won the Frank Broyles Award last season as college football's best assistant coach. He was the architect of the most prolific offense in NCAA history. But after slipping to 2-2 this season with a moribund showing at Land Shark Stadium, Wilson was on the Sooner Nation's firing line.

The label on Wilson's play-calling was "too conservative." But Stoops said, "Our game plan was what it had been all along. . . . I thought we called the game really the same throughout."

On OU's first drive, quarterback Landry Jones completed 3-of-4 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. But the rest of the way, he amassed just 126 passing yards as the game plan appeared to grow more and more conservative. Jones threw deeper than 10 yards just five times, and only once threw deeper than 20 yards.

Stoops offered up a reason typical for not passing more: Miami was putting Jones in danger.

"You drop
back to throw the ball the opening play of the second half and we don't pick up a blitz and the quarterback gets killed and they have the ball on the 10-yard line," Stoops said. "That's what passing did for us there at the start of the second half."

After Jones' fumble on the first play after halftime and Jacory Harris' touchdown pass, the Sooners trailed the entire second half, even falling behind 21-10 for a while. Yet, Wilson called 12 runs and 10 passes — an effective mix under normal circumstances, but perhaps a bit run-heavy for a team playing from behind.

In the fourth quarter, Jones attempted just three passes, completing two for 6 yards. On the Sooners' final drive, Wilson called six consecutive handoffs before a short third-down throw gained zero yards. All those rushes wound precious time off the clock, which resulted in the Sooners getting only two possessions in the final period.

"Towards the end, we had been running the ball well," Stoops said of DeMarco Murray's 23 yards on the first four attempts of the final drive. But that was followed by a couple of 1-yard losses by Chris Brown. "In the end, we got down there towards the end and we didn't.

"Whatever. Those people, sure, they're good play-callers after the fact, and they can call plays when they get their team."

Murray likewise said players were unfazed by criticism of their play-caller.

"Fans are fans," he said. "They're gonna love us when we're up. When things start going wrong, they're gonna criticize. Coach Wilson is doing a great job. Everybody's behind him 100 percent."

Murray offered up another target for Sooner Nation's cross-hairs: the players.

"Things he told us not to do, we did," Murray said. "I think it was on us as players, not playing fundamentally sound, getting ahead of ourselves and making a lot of dumb mistakes. It's not Coach Wilson's fault. He's calling great plays. They're open. We've just got to settle down a little bit and let the game come to us."

After all the questions to Stoops about Wilson's play-calling had subsided Monday night, Stoops later added his own ideas about fans being overly critical.

"It's easy to sit around a day or two after the game and second-guess play-calling," he said. "I guess some people wish we had thrown it more late in this game. In the Sugar Bowl a few years ago we ran the ball effectively late, then got second-guessed for looking down the field in the passing game.

"The fact is that on our final drive at Miami the first two runs gained a total of 20 yards. We felt good about where we were with the running game at that point. If we had we thrown it but had incompletions or an interception, the same people who are saying we should have thrown it more would be wondering why we didn't keep it on the ground."

Stoops acknowledged that injuries to the Sooners' top three weapons in the passing game — Sam Bradford, Jermaine Gresham and, on Saturday, Ryan Broyles — have affected Wilson's calls.

"He's obviously been dealt a difficult hand to play, with all that's happened," Stoops said. "In the end, he's the same guy he was a year ago."

THIRD AND LONG

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson has been criticized for being too conservative with his play-calling in Saturday's loss at Miami. Although Wilson called for running plays three times on third-and-long, the Sooners faced only three third-and-short situations all night. A look at OU's third-down plays:

First quarter

3rd-and-9: 9-yard pass completion (first down)

3rd-and-12: Incomplete pass (quarterback pressure)

3rd-and-7: 5-yard pass completion

Second quarter

3rd-and-7: 4-yard pass completion

3rd-and-7: 4-yard pass completion

3rd-and-8: 12-yard run (first down)

3rd-and-12: 4-yard pass completion

Third quarter

3rd-and-10: 12-yard pass completion (first down)

3rd-and-15: Pass interference (first down)

3rd-and-1: 2-yard run (first down)

3rd-and-10: Minus-2-yard run (penalty, no play)

3rd-and-27: Incomplete pass (15 yards downfield)

3rd-and-14: 4-yard pass completion

3rd-and-3: Incomplete pass (12 yards downfield)

Fourth quarter

3rd-and-9: Minus-2-yard run

3rd-and-2: 3-yard run (first down)

3rd-and-12: 0-yard pass completion

RUN HEAVY

Oklahoma ran the football 58 percent of the time last week against Miami, or 42 of 70 plays. In a game decided by 10 points or less, that's the highest run-to-pass ratio by a Sooner offense since 2006 (the year before Sam Bradford became the starter), and the fourth-highest in four seasons under offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. A look at the top five:

OSU, 2006: 47-11 (81.0 percent), (W, 27-21)

Oregon, 2006: 43-24 (64.2 percent), (L, 34-33)

UAB, 2006: 40-17 (70.2 percent), (W, 24-17)

Miami, 2009: 42-30 (58.3 percent), (L, 21-20)

Texas, 2007: 43-31 (58.1 percent), (W, 28-21)

Stoops is misreading the criticism leveled against his regime. The critics are saying he does not demonstrate an ability to adapt to changing conditions. And the truth is, he just doesn't get it.

come on sooner dummies, check out the wide outs and see how many can get off the cornerback and run routes - pretty basic to pass offense

I saw 2 who weren't having that much trouble. It was horrible play calling and a game costing decision not to go for two. If they have so much confidence in Landry then why didn't they let him have the opportunity to make some plays when they had the chance? Ever heard of play action, Kevin?

Half these people are friggin idiots. Bandwagon fans the lot of them. For all you people who think Bob Stoops and Kevin Wilson need fired go be Texas fans or Osu fans.
OU has been the winningest program in the country for the last decade gotten us to 4 national title games . Dominated the big twelve and produced 2 Hiesman trophy winners and 3 or 4 Hiesman runner ups . Not to mention all the other awards and all americans this guy has coached . Oh but we need to fire him cause we lost a couple of games . I am sorry folks But even urban myer and pete carrol cant coach through injuries.
If you were true sooner fans you would be supportung your team and the coaches through these issues . Berating them and telling them they need fired is not gonna help right the ship .

When you have 9 yards to go for a 1st down your receivers should be on routes that take them past the 1st down marker. How many plays were there that the pass play was way short of the first down?

If the offensive line did it's job, it would help. If Gresham were healthy, the wide receivers would be open more often and then passes could go down field. If "ifs and buts," but the line doesn't move well because it is too slow and fat and Gresham is hurt, so the season will be one of those where the team has to figure out how best to make things work. Hopefully they'll stay healthy and have a chance to win, otherwise it's going to get ugly and we'll wait till next year.

I agree with Pepto, it appears that we either cannot or will not adapt to game change situations. I also suggest this is true with the defense as well as offense. I think we "wimped out" going for the FG with less than 3 Minutes in the game and four points behind. Going for the first down would have at least given us a chance for the win. At that point it didn't matter if we lost the game by one point or by four. I think it was nieve to think we could turn the ball over to them and then hold them to three and out then drive the ball into FG range.

At least OU has stopped having the offensive lineman look at the sidelines for play calls....

The Sooners are so thin at all offensive positions, what happened to all those 4-5 star blue chip high school recruits we read about every February ????

Are the recruiters incapable of judging talent, character, intellegence ????

Who are the offensive recruiters ????

As far as running backs go, Chris Brown runs like he has his eyes closed and as soon as he runs into somebody he falls down, DeMarco is a shell of what he used to be because of his special teams injuries, a blue chip potential superstar running back playing special teams, good call coach....I guess OU shoulda ignored the gun charges on that one recruited receiver, at least he would have played with attitude, maybe....

Ah...remember the good old days of Chuck "third and" Long? It seems like they never left.

About 3:00 into the third quarter, I started calling OU's plays...with about 80% accuracy. If I know what OU is going to run, you know darn well Miami (and other foes) know what they are going to run.

One word: predictable.

OU is behind and Kevin Wilson calls a draw play on third and 9? Still behind third and 11 screen pass? Still losing third and 12 and he calls a bubble screen pass. He didn't give his players a chance. Nat'l title game he calls three of the same running plays at the goal line, florida stuffed it. I love OU but Stoops will change his tune when those 85000 that show up in Norman drops to 50 or 40 thousand people instead, people won't watch stupid coaching, trust me ask JOhn BLAKE!!!!!!!

Those calling for Wilson's scalp are not real Sooner fans, and should wear Orange instead of Red.

However, surely the coaches agree that it was not the wisest choice in the world to call those two runs with Brown to the right side of the line those last couple plays on offense that doomed our chances. While it is true that Murray had been running the ball well on that drive, he ran it to the left side of the line where they were doing their jobs. The right side of the line didn't do much to help us all game, and I'm not sure we'd want to put the game in their hands again.

My take is the fans calling for Wilson to resign are dumber than dirt, while at the same time the coaches are not being entirely honest when they say we called exactly the plays we wanted to call.

All OU fans are spoiled, for we've had good coaches and good players who have given us more than our shares of wins and championships. Some OU fans, however, are childish, demented, foolish, counterproductive, foul, misguided dimwits. If you can't stick behind the coaches and players when we lose, don't call yourself a Sooners fan when we win.

Hey Atlanta, boB&Co is very well paid and when they make that kind of dough they CAN be criticized. This loosing games late in the 4th Quarter has become a habit. The offense sucks and the defense sucks in the 4th. boB is far to scared of making a mistake.

wonderful take on the 3rd down. from that perspective, it certainly doesnt look bad. however, checking the play calls on second down has a lot to do with being in a 3rd and manageable versus 3 and 9+

I want Venebles and Wilson gone. I am not a fairweather Sooner fan, and I did graduate from OU. Wilson isn't as bad as Chuck "3rd and Long", but he's darn close. He does not adapt to anything. He keeps swapping out our o-line guys every game, so there's no consistency. Try running some different plays for once! So Gresham is hurt, that means we don't have another TE capable of catching the F'ing ball?!! Get real, Wilson just doesn't use the TE's much, which is a big mistake.

Granted all of our "blue chip" players don't seem to be having standout seasons, but I believe most of that is because they aren't coached to do so. Mack Brown was in our same position back in 2000-01, he cleaned house, got some new coordinators: won championships.

With as much prestige as OU commands, we can find better coordinators. I want Venebles gone before Wilson though. We have ranked the lowest pass defense since Mike Stoops, Mangino, and Leach were with us. Wake up Bob, I love ya, but get rid of your friends in the coordinator jobs and get people who can get it done.

I didn't see the Miami QB stop passing after he was picked on their first two possessions. Bob, its time you stop blaming the media and the fans that love you and our sooners. Loyalty is not a bad thing, but you can be loyal to a fault. Great players need great assistant coaching.

I love my Sooners. It is true that when things start going bad that the fans want someone fired. Look at what happened to Tennessee. They cried for Fulmer's resignation and they got Kiffin who hasn't really done that much improving on their quarterback situation. He insists on staying with the boy even though he can't pass worth a "hoot"...I am proud of what Stoops has done for the Oklahoma athletic program. He is an awesome coach and yes, I think that he is stubborn when it comes to Kevin Wilson. I believe that as the program changes; so should the play calling and the way the guys are coached. I also believe that players need motivation and that should come from coaching. I believe that sometimes our coaches don't try to motivate the guys enough and they need to get those guys believing in themselves...look at these smaller conference teams....their coaches get them believing that they can beat the bigger conference teams and it works....it all boils down to the coaching staff....as far as our injuries and the fact that we are thin on offense right now...it is going to take some of these new, young guys to say "let me go in, I will do the job for you"....we need that, right now! Love you, Sooners....BOOMER SOONERS!!!!

Sure, everyone wants to blame Kevin Wilson for conservative play calling when the game was on the line (and the same goes for the NC games and bowl games in the past). However, we were overrated coming in. We had a QB, TE and RB. Without an experienced line those don't matter. We have no WR's who are a threat, especially now that Broyles is out. We were overrated coming in. The coaches blew smoke about the line and got everyone's hopes up. The fact is, we are rebuilding and have lost others to injuries that we were building around. If, if, if.......if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle. Everyone should just deal with the fact that we aren't that good this year. I'll be in Norman on Saturday, disappointed that we don't have many playmakers but I'm still a fan. Just pray we have some good recruiting classes despite the lack of success this year. And, we can still win the Big XII and go to a BCS game. Although I'm not holding my breath but I'm hoping. Boomer Sooner! And don't expect Bob to throw his assistants under the bus, that's not going to happen. Wouldn't you want to work for someone like that?

REBUILD - There was a time when OU never rebuilt, they just reloaded....

When the assistant coaches all make more money than the President of the United States & the Head Coach makes 5 million+, NOBODY's HUNGRY....

How can you have your players play with fire & passion when your own fire & passion is focused on vacations, stocks & bonds, all the other time consuming distractions that the upper crust enjoy....

Nobody's worried about losing their job or finding another job because the big boss man won't get rid of you & why become a head coach somewhere else making less money than you are now & have to be responsible for your teams performnance. At Oklahoma big game\money Bob runs interference for all his assistants and they don't face the heat of the fire, that's why he gets $5,000,000.00+....Life is good, if not great or better than that as an Oklahoma assistant coach....Man, that sun, sand & surf sure is hot on the beach ain't it COACH....
