Up close: OU's Cameron Kenney

Just four games into his University of Oklahoma career, Cameron Kenney is expected to take on a larger role for the Sooners' wide receiver corps due to the injury to Ryan Broyles. Stephen Pingry/Tulsa World

NORMAN — Someone asked Bob Stoops an interesting, and pertinent, question this week: Do you have a wide receiver who can make a big play against Baylor Saturday?

"Sure," the Oklahoma coach answered.

The inquisitor came right back.

"Who?"

It's worth asking, now that Ryan Broyles and his 23 catches for 346 yards and seven touchdowns have been lost up to four weeks to a shoulder injury. Mossis Madu presumably steps in for Broyles as OU's starting slot receiver Saturday, after catching two passes and running a reverse 15 yards in Broyles' place at Miami.

"He made some (plays). He needs to make more," Stoops said. "He needs to be more consistent in practice."

Not exactly a vote of confidence.

Brandon Caleb had 104 yards against Tulsa Sept. 19, but only 26 at Miami. Adron Tennell has struggled since the season opener. Jaz Reynolds is an untested true freshman. Dejuan Miller and Jameel Owens are unproven sophomores.

"They just haven't done what's necessary to earn that time," Stoops said of Miller and Owens, "in everything. Off the field and what you do in training and what you do on the field in practice."

Maybe the answer is junior college transfer Cameron Kenney.

"I told (graduate assistant) Joey Halzle before the (Miami) game, 'That kid's gonna play his tail off tonight,'" wide receivers coach Jay Norvell said. "You could just tell."

Sure enough, Kenney hit career highs of six catches, 72 yards and a touchdown.
The injury-riddled Sooners will need more of the same against Baylor and beyond.

How's Ryan doing?

"He's tough. He'll be able to bounce back real quick. He's helping us trying to get better, helping us on the side, showing us the right way to do things."

You caught the touchdown pass on your first drive Saturday, and almost had another in the second quarter. What happened there?

"It was a second too late on my break, and the ball came right when I turned my head. It was mistimed. We'll bounce back and make sure it's on time next time."

Can you pick up Broyles' slack?

"At any time a play could be called for anybody, depending on which read the quarterback makes. If I'm there for that checkdown, I'll be able to make the play."

Can you go deep?

"I enjoy going for the deep ball. That's a great option to have on offense, to make the defense spread out and open things up for other players."

I believe these guys can make the catches provided the OC calls pass routes that are more than 4 yards.

Kenney is nice but not enough. What is up with Dejuan Miller. 6' - 6'' tall very strong. Is he in some kind of trouble with Stoops? I thought he would be the best this year?

maybe bob needs to stop shopping for talent in the hood and look at the boys who will play and stay out of trouble at the same time, nebraska has had some fine monsters the last couple of years who go to class and stay out of trouble, hmmmmm

Ok everyone here is the deal. OU is in need of an offensive coordinator, OU fans have forgotten that Bob Stoops is a former defensive coordinator. When he was at Florida, he had sole control of the defense. Steve Spurrier left him alone. Even Spurrier said that when Stoops took over as defensive coordinator he never worried about his defense. Stoops played defense at Iowa, he coached defense at Iowa. The bottom line is Bob Stoops is defense minded, as a result the offense has to suffer. In the past, Stoops had taken good running backs and turn them into DB, for example DJ Wolfe and too many others to name. Even with that OU still have had great offenses, but when it comes to offense Stoop is lost. It was Chuck Long would put in place the offensive plays OU is using today.

Seriously folks show me a team that could handle these issues without missing a beat. BTW the defence has really only given up four TDs in 4 games.

Throw the ball, throw the screen, throw the shuttle, throw the Murray halfback pass and don't forget to throw the block. This alone is 21 points.
