The door has closed on the spread offense

Outpick the Picker:
Think you can outpick the Picker?
Take him on every week of the football season. Enter here.
Here's some breaking news: The spread is dead.
Much like the quarterback option, wishbone-type razzle-dazzle that preceded it, the gimmicky spread offense has enjoyed a decade-long free pass, confusing defenses with its dinky bubble passes and flare tosses.
But all perishables have a shelf life, all gimmicks have solutions.
Whereas the spread is still popular at fringe programs like Missouri, Auburn and Texas Tech, it is clearly a second-rate choice of offenses when it comes to competing with the big boys.
The top powers -- Florida, Alabama and USC -- are balanced.
The new Wildcat attacks are not spread offenses; the Wildcat is more like the single wing, with the football being hiked to the best athlete.
Few gimmick, or system, quarterbacks, from the wishbone or the spread, make it in the professional ranks.
The spread has had it because you can't run out of it consistently: Third-and-goal from the half-yard line is a passing down. A quarterback sneak from the nine on third-and-goal is as good as a red zone spread formation running play.
The spread offense also detracts from a team's defense; you are what you practice. And the defense is on the field too long.
It is time for the potentially elite to get back to basics.
National titles are won on great passes on third-and-10.
Balance puts you in position to make that play.
Many teams are spread too thin.
PICKS
TONIGHT
Cincinnati (-3) at South Florida:
Cincy carries with it the curse of trendiness.
S. Florida by 2.
SATURDAY
Texas (-3) versus OU:
The kickoff will be delayed a few minutes because Sam and Colt will ride the Ferris wheel together one last time.
It's like Woodstock revised with those two: peace and love, brothers and sisters, being chums with your arch enemy. Come on, stop it; that's flag football, not tackle.
Stoops is the most defensively effective thing about OU, as he tries to make people believe that beating a Big 12 North bum for a watered-down conference title is more important than defeating Texas.
Losing four out of five to Texas would be Howie Schnellenberger territory.
Texas is about as overrated as you can get, having played Nobody, Hardly Anybody, Next to Nobody, and Nothing.
Longhorn defender Kindle is scary.
Bradford could pass for a Manning.
The OU secondary couldn't cover a pot of peas.
Oddity: Texas is out for revenge off a win.
No pressure on OU for a change; Tex could choke.
Will Sam and Colt text at halftime?
Texas by 6.
Missouri at OSU (-7):
Both of these have gotten bad news from the fringe, as vanquished foes Illinois and Georgia, have turned up stinky.
The Missouri run game looks like a bunch of crabs; it's all sideways scurrying, illustrating how difficult it is to pick up three yards consistently out of the spread.
Good news for OSU, Missouri's starting quarterback is said to be fit enough to play. He's average.
OSU by 9.
Arkansas at Florida (-24):
Will all those who said that joining the SEC would be a smart thing for Arkansas to do please raise their dumb hands.
Florida by 22.
South Carolina at Alabama (-17):
Many who believe Bama is better than Florida have never had their bells rung.
For some reason, Spurrier seems to repel quarterback talent.
Bama by 14.
USC (-11) at Notre Dame:
ND is thought to be a legit BCS bowl contender, and the ND quarterback is thought to be a serious Heisman candidate.
Here's why: The Michigan State quarterback overthrew an open receiver in the end zone to hand average ND an undeserved win.
After the warm-up, USC might not punt.
USC by 13.
Texas Tech at Nebraska (-6 1/2):
Fishy low number of the week.
Lost in translation: Texas Tech doesn't always speak with its fists.
Health of best runner in the conference, Helu, a huge issue.
Nebraska by 5.
Aggies (-4) at Kansas State:
Snyder to announce he was just kidding?
Sense of humor a must here.
Aggies by 2.
Virginia Tech (-3) at Georgia Tech:
Total passing yards should be about 10.
Georgia Tech by 2.
Kansas (-10) at Colorado:
Not a sound defensive player in sight.
KU quarterback could be the next Brees.
KU by 8.
SUNDAY
Kansas City at the Redskins (-6):
A home team the politicians deserve.
Wash by 7.
Baltimore at Minnesota (-3):
Were it not for 15-yard penalties, you might not notice mean old Ray Lewis.
Minnie by 9.
Giants at New Orleans (-3):
Brees a fantasy league letdown due to overly proficient Saint run game, defense.
Eli seen thinking about smiling.
NO by 2.
Tennessee at New England (-9):
Brady seems a bit closer to male model stardom than NFL all-star team. Tennessee is ready to golf, draft Bradford.

Chicago at Atlanta (-3 1/2):
Looks like a playoff preview.
Atlanta by 5.

Denver at San Diego (-4):

"The door has closed on the spread offense" --- hah hah hah. Picker Dude, for you info, Florida runs a spread. It is not going to die because in order to run a pro set or I you need dominant O-lineman. How many programs are going to get those? Not many outside the top 20 programs.
So...the spread is not going to die, it may get modified, by the way the Wishbone is not dead, it's seeing a renaissance at Georgia Tech, Navy still runs Paul Johnson's version, and correct me if I'm wrong because I have not seen them play in quite some time, so does Air Force.
You are on crack if you think the spread is going to die. Watch and see how A&M does w/ the pro-set offense, that is one program that is not going to get those elite O-lineman required to dominate defenses.
Go back to the drawing board, Mr. Picker, or start taking notes by reading and studying!

Rhymeister is correct. Nothing ever dies. It just evolves. The spread is used by Florida, Alabama, Texas, OU, etc. all the time.
It will continue to be used but it will most likely be modified to incorporate more balance through running in the spread (ala OSU).
I do agree that it does hinder red zone production inside the 5 or 10 yard line. When a team gets too used to taking advantage of the space on the field, they tend to forget how to play smashmouth football when there is no more space left.

Spread is dead?? Whew, you're way off base on that one. But, I think that case has already been made by previous comments.
I agree with most of the rest, and lol'd at the mizzou ground attack being equated to crabs. Great visual.

Texas will win..27-17. Sam better start running because Texas' D-linemen just broke through again. Shipley will have 250+ all purpose yards and if he and McCoy were the only 2 players on the field for Texas, I don't think OU's secondary to sniff out the pass.

Texas ain't played nobody, OU is playing like nobody on their defense can make a stop when the game is on the line, nobody playing WR can catch a pass....
Texas has no experience playing nobody & OU is full of nobodies, the unknown will confuse Texas & OU will surprise them because Texas can't focus on nobody and nobody will stand out for OU....Except for Sam....

I agree with Rhymeister and MexiMike. The spread isn't dead. However, teams do have trouble running out of the spread formation, especially in short-yardage and red zone situations. Therefore, it is sometimes vital to use power-formations. While the spread is better for passing, the I-formation is better for running. Florida runs a shot-gun offense. However, their offense is more power, run-oriented than the offenses of teams like Texas Tech.
On the OU-Texas game, I think Texas will win by 10. The Texas passing game will be too much for OU's defensive backfield to handle.

Graham needs to get out of the offense and back to what he knows. With his involvement in the offense, TU scored 0 against OU and uses time outs so the coaches can agree on the formation or play. It is so amazing his back healed enough for him to return to the sideline. Now if we can just get someone to take the playsheet from him, we'll be back in business. Let the offensive coordinator do his job!!

OU_Glenn, I don't think that running out of the spread is all that difficult until the teams get into the redzone and there isn't anywhere left to spread the defense out to.
The spread run works especially well if you have a scat back that is quick enough to take advantage of the spread out defense and get 5 to 6 yards where a normal Power I would only get you 2 to 3.
But I do agree that the I formation is absolutely necessary in scoring situations.

Euless: The game is an absolute toss-up. Did you see Colorado dominate Texas in Austin?
Rhymeister: Tech doesn't run anything remotely similar to the wishbone, it's like the Wildcat, or the single wing, very few pitches, lots of qb power runs. Like Florida.
Sax: See above. Florida doesn't dink it around. It power runs with the qb.
A Powers: TU played about as well as it could. Nice playmakers, but under-sized and thin. Boise is solid, well coached, good, not great.

OU can win this game...no orakpo chasing us around and that was against a great o line...
Dont kid yourself florida is a running team. spread offenses throw for a bunch of yards.
tebow is a option qb with him being the option most the time. I would like for florida to lose the sec championship game and OU can play em in a bcs game. I would drive to tempe to see that! Anyhow Ou can beat texas, texas has no running game except for mccoy, And OU's defense has a middle linebacker, (if he stays healthy) GO Sooners!

The Spread is Dead?????? LOL!!!!!!!!
Someone forgot to tell the University of Houston that.
How quickly we forget......They have the #1 offense in the country and spanked OSU in Stillwater with it earlier this year. I seem to remember those dinky screens and flare outs you simply dismiss chewing up major yardage and destroying any national perception of OSU having a good defense. Although in fairness to OSU I havent seen anyone stop that Houston offense yet.
The spread is far from dead. In fact its #1 in the nation right now.

Houston? Wow. Now there's a college power. The Houston that just got obliterated UTEK, UTEP, somebody like that?
Your pointing to Houston as a power reinforces the point that the spread is a gimmick for outsiders; nothing wrong with that. But it is what it is.
The top three teams in the country don't run the rinky-dink spread. Notice a trend?
The only place you can run from the spread is to the sideline.

Houston's spread offense is the #1 overall offense in the country.....period. They avg. almost 600 yds of offense and 40 some odd points a game. Those "dinky screens and flare outs" have been extremley effective.
Houston's problems are many....but offense certainly isnt one of them. They have played quality opponents with the lone exception of UTEP against which Houston Scored 45 pts.
Houston's defense is a joke and their team is young. That is their problem. Regardless of that I wouldnt want to play them.
You might want to actually do some research next time......looking like an idiot cant be fun.
