Sam's plans on hold, for now
Bradford pondering season-ending surgery.

Online reports state OU quarterback Sam Bradford will have season-ending shoulder surgery Tuesday in Alabama. Stephen Pingry/Tulsa World

NORMAN — Seventeen reporters from six television stations, three newspapers and three Web sites turned out in the rain on Wednesday looking for answers, but Sam Bradford was nowhere to be found.

An interview session with Oklahoma's junior quarterback, complete with a live Internet video stream, was canceled less than two hours before Bradford was supposed to speak because, according to a press release, Bradford wanted "more time to gather information" about whether surgery was the right option for his sore right shoulder.

OU coach Bob Stoops said a day earlier that Bradford would address questions after Wednesday's practice. The school's media relations staff sent out several communiqués with details about a video stream.

By mid-afternoon, word had gotten out that Bradford had been to Alabama earlier in the week for another evaluation with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Rivals network site SoonerScoop.com, citing sources close to Bradford, even reported that Bradford would have season-ending surgery with Andrews next Tuesday. ESPN.com also reported that Bradford decided to have surgery and is expected to speak about it Thursday.

However, OU spokesman Kenny Mossman said in a text message Wednesday night that nothing has been scheduled with Bradford for Thursday.

Stoops told Wednesday's press gathering that he would not take questions about Bradford.

"He'll have something to say when he knows
what his path will be. And that isn't right now," Stoops said. "So I'm not the one to answer it. He will. I will once he feels he's ready to and knows for sure what he wants to do."

Stoops said the Bradford briefing was canceled because, "He just wasn't ready to fully answer everything that would want to be asked, and for sure what he wants to do just yet until he — he has a few more people to deal with. That's it. I won't say another word about it. If that's OK."

Stoops did later elaborate that his Tuesday statement was not without Bradford's knowledge.

"Sam wanted to do (a press conference), but he changed his mind," Stoops said. "I wouldn't set up something like that without Sam knowing about it."

Speculation began to emerge that Bradford had indeed decided upon surgery and that at the press conference he would say his season — and possibly his OU career, with potentially millions of NFL dollars in his future — was over.

OU football players under Stoops have always been off limits for interviews outside of the routine Monday and Tuesday post-practice sessions and post-game interviews on Saturday.

Mossman said he spoke with Bradford about a Wednesday interview session on Tuesday night "just to make sure he understood the time frame. And then Bob called me this afternoon and told me he didn't want to do it today. That's it. There wasn't a whole lot of structure to it."

Bradford originally sustained the injury in OU's game against BYU on Sept. 5. Bradford was evaluated by Andrews before returning to practice prior to the Sooners' Oct. 3 game at Miami. He had been medically cleared to resume throwing, but sat out the Miami game because of soreness.

Bradford returned the following week against Baylor and passed for 389 yards on 49 attempts and seemed OK before lasting just eight plays against Texas. Bradford got another evaluation from Andrews on Monday or Tuesday.

It's unclear if the injury, the aggravation of the injury or the option of surgery would hurt Bradford's draft status.

Gil Brandt, senior writer at NFL.com, said he thought Bradford — projected by many as the No. 1 overall pick — would not suffer unless further exams revealed serious damage.

"Modern medicine, the way it is now, it's the eighth wonder of the world, so to speak," Brandt said. "The exercises they can do to make it stronger and everything, unless there's something drastic. . . . he went to see Andrews twice, didn't he? I think Andrews is probably the best in the world at what he does. I think if Andrews thought there was any chance that it was gonna hurt him permanently, then he wouldn't have said (before the Miami game), 'You can go play.'"

Scouts, Inc., scouting director Todd McShay, a regular contributor for ESPN, said scouts already had a handful of questions about Bradford before the injury, and said "of course" the injury will raise red flags.

Because of what he called "negative momentum," McShay projected Bradford to go in the latter half of the first round of next year's draft. Financially, that's a stark difference from the top overall pick.

Last year's No. 1 pick, quarterback Matthew Stafford, signed contract with $41 million guaranteed. Mark Sanchez, who was drafted fifth, got $28 million guaranteed. Josh Freeman was the 17th pick and got $10 million guaranteed.

That's why McShay said, surgery or not, it might be in Bradford's best interests to return next season and come out for the 2011 draft.

"I think if he has to shut it down and can't play the rest of the season . . . he should think long and hard about coming back next season," McShay said. "Now, there's obviously something to be said about cutting his losses now and just taking what he can take and go maybe later in the first round — hopefully in the first round. It wouldn't be an awful thing to get drafted in the first round and go to a decent team and be able to sit a year and learn and be in the NFL."

Get your shoulder fixed, wait till the combine(s) and take your chances in the draft; another injury and your draft status could drop like a rock. Best of luck to you Sam - you're a heck of Q.B.

His shoulder will take months to rehab. He won't be anywhere close to combine shape when they come around. If he enters the draft this year he'll be losing draft status and probably go late first round.

I think the best thing would be to have the surgery and come back next year to show the scouts that shoulder isn't affected. That's just me. I'm sure whatever he decides will work out just fine.

Sam's season is over. But the question now is if he will waive his last year with OU or jump to the NFL if anyone wants him?

This is a sad situation for a remarkable person and athlete. Who could blame Sam for wanting to win a National Championship in a Sooner uniform. He had all the tools in place last year, but a bum coaching staff blew it for him and the rest of the team. That was probably the best collection of talent to wear a Sooner uniform at once. It was probably a bit naive to think that he could deliver the same kind of numbers and remain uninjured with the current O-line, let alone get another chance at a National Championship. Stoops deserves some ire for this. Sam's stock was never higher than at the end of last year's season, but Stoops either selfishly and/or stubbornly convinced himself that he and Sam could return and win the big one under his profoundly flawed coaching regime.

All that said, Sam's gonna be just fine no matter his prognosis or the outcome of this season. It's my hope that he bows out this season to take care of himself and contemplate the next big step.

MTS: Although you have god points, I think it is plain wrong to assume Stoops selfishly convinced Sam to Return. It was Sam and his families decision. Bradford grew up in Oklahoma where there is no pro team and all he ever wanted to do was play for OU. he was having fun in college and wanted to come back for all the right reasons (which you said). I truly believe that the coaches have the best interests for Sam all along although it doesn't appear that way after saturdays injury. He went to the best shoulder doctor, Dr. James Andrews and was cleared to play. It wouldn't surprise me if he decided to stay for his senior year, add more muscle and work on his 1st round game. I do think however, he will go pro and play for the St. Loius Rams. Whatever he decides I wish him the best.

Choppa - I agree with what you said. Stops even brought in NFL people that he had connections with to talk to Bradford sohe can make an informed decision HIMSELF. Bradford loved the college life so he stayed. Some people just want to blame the coaches for EVERYTHING!

I know right. They will be looking at getting a QB since Bulger is getting up there in age and has been inconsistant. I very well could be wrong but that would make sense. But, the Rams are a pretty borong team. Side note: I think the NFL is boring anyways compared to College. I hate that we get either the Cowboys or the Cheifs. NAP TIME ON SUNDAY!

That's Chiefs there, chief... ;-)

I'd like to see him go to the rams. I'm already a cardinals fan, so a good reason to like a st louis team is fine by me. (Honestly though, I'd like whatever team Bradford went to, even the cowgirls. call it a man-crush if you must.)

Anybody who thinks Stoops lured Sam back are idiots. Plain and simple. As the above poster noted in response- Sam always wanted to play for the Sooners. He really did need to mature physically another year before going into the NFL. Stoops and our coaches are class acts completely and want the best for each of our players.

I am curious what is the difference in surgery to repair and resting it for a few months? Is the surgery really the best option here in this type injury?

Because when they move back to LA in a few years Bradford can hang with Griffin. The LA-OU connection, baby.

Sam Bradford stop, think and listen to your gut feeling. You are young but savvy. Don't let someone else decide your fate for you.

Hey it wasn't that long ago when the Rams were the toast of ALL the major sports. Sam could be the next one to turn them around. I was going through the NFL trying to find what teams would take a QB early: Rams, Panthers, Redskins, maybe Seahawks, Titans (confused on them), Bills..... Can't see the Bucs doing it since they drafted Freeman and have been playing Johnson! anyway this is way off topic, sad to see Sam Bradford struggling like this, good luck to him

I believe what ever is going to happen to Sam is going to happen and I wish him the best of luck. However, I also believe the coaches are so involved with all the hooplah about to have surgery or not to have surgery it is distracting to the team. Coaches let the doctors worry about what to do about Sam and you do your job of getting the "Sooner Team" ready for Kansas.
