OU's Stoops today: QB Jones comparable to Bradford

NORMAN — The first time Sam Bradford was injured, the Oklahoma Sooners compared replacement quarterback Landry Jones to their Heisman Trophy-winning records-setter.

Now that Bradford is out for the year, having opted for shoulder surgery, the comparisons have returned.

“He’s similiar to Sam in that he’s a very humble guy. He has a great passion to play. He has a calm demeanor to him,” OU coach Bob Stoops said of Jones on Monday morning’s Big 12 teleconference. “Those kinds of guys have a calm presence to them and relaxed look. But they’re really competitive. It just kind of resonates.”

With Bradford sidelined with the sprained AC joint, Jones has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,363 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. He was 26-of-38 for 252 yards, two touchdowns and one interception at Kansas on Saturday, helping the 4-3 Sooners to a 35-13 victory in the process.

Two weeks after Bradford suffered his initial injury against BYU, Jones set a school record with six touchdown passes against Tulsa. That attracted a great deal of curiosity about the redshirt freshman from Artesia, N.M.

Now that Jones is quarterbacking the rest of this season and, potentially, beyond since Bradford’s intention is to enter the NFL Draft if his shoulder recovers as expected, that curiosity has returned.

“From watching (Jones) in person, we really thought he threw a great ball,” Stoops said of the recruiting process. “We like a great pocket presence and delivery and balance. You love the fact that he was a two-time
state champion in high school. He was really developed in an excellent program there. Getting to know him, he had a great personality as well to handle being in that position.”

THE ONLY forseable reason for Bradford to return next year is if his recovery/rehab is slowed due to a complication and he misses the draft. I feel, if that occurs, he may return for his senior year and await the 2011 draft. Otherwise, Sam will play on Sundays!

Quickly now, forget about Sam, Landry is the man....See Landry throw, throw Landry throw, forget about Sam, Sam who, Sam what, Sam where, Sam when, go sam go....

It's all you can do though, Sam is done, Sam is gone, goodbye, good luck Sam....

What if Sam wants to play for OU next year if no one in the NFL drafts him in the first round???? Will he be welcomed back???? It's not his team anymore, it's now Landry's team....Is the NFL Sam's only option now????

He does seem to have great poise and good accuracy. He doesn't have the big game experiences and tends to make a few more beginner mistakes. But he certainly seemed to fill in quite well and should develop well. The OU system (at least last year) did not require the QB to be the savior, so while there's not a strong line and dependable receivers this year it does require more of the QB. Bradford was accurate and poised, but not much was asked of him. Jones should do well in this same system. Bradford will be a big project at the pro level because much more will be asked of him.

Bradford seems committed, he made a lot of progress over the past offseason, so the surgery recovery most likely will go well. If I were to bet, I'd say even if he had troubles he'd go pro. Hopefully we don't see him on Sundays for a couple of seasons...he is far from ready to be an NFL QB and the development time w/o huge expectations would be a great benefit to him.

Let Landry get a few more games in and there will not be a drop off in performance. Future Heisman possible. Throws a great deep ball.

Not being the first overall pick isn't a bad thing. The further he slips the better chance he has of ending up on a decent team. I sure didn't want to see him go become a Lion, anymore than I wanted to see Blake Griffin be a Clipper. The two worst pro franchises in their respective sports.

He is more agile than Sam is. I see a lot of great potential in Landry if the O-line can improve....

Imagine how good Landry will be in a year or two.

It is never really a great idea to compare quarterbacks in my mind. Sam is Sam. Let Landry be Landry.
Mr. Jones has a lot of potenial. But Mr. Jones must do a better job of throwing the ball to a spot... instead of at the reciever You will have also noticed that Mr. Jones tends to throw (some) balls about a foot too tall for any reciever to go up and get which can lead to interceptions.
Unfortunately for Mr. Jones..he does not have a lot of time to get better. He is really under the gun to show that he can put the ball in the right spot on a pass pattern whether it be 1 and 10 or 12 or 4th and short. A tall order considering the other Offensive issues.
Our running game has yet to blossom to be consistant. We have no guy who can get 2 yards up the middle on 3rd and 1.
We also should agree the recievers for OU have not proven they can catch and run constistantly.
NOR has the O line proven they can play run blocking and pass blocking for anything close to 60 minutes. The Kansas game when OU had 1 down on the 1 yard line should remind us of this.. Watch the replay. Kansas was much faster off the ball then the OU O line..and we wound up with 4th and goal..
Good Luck Mr. Jones..YOU CAN DO IT!!

tulsandn, that makes very little sense. Did you not see the article in which Sam said he will have surgery and head to the pros? He is projected anywhere from 5 to 15. That's not going to change much, if any at all. He's gone. Get it?

You don't have to "believe" Stoops, gba, to recognize the talent Jones possesses.

Bradford's still a first round pick IF all goes well with his recovery and rehab. If he has any setbacks at all, there will be lingering questions which he could help to answer by coming back next year.

tulsandn raises a good question. Say OU wins out this year (conceivable, with that defense and only one real quality opponent remaining), with RS Freshman Jones at QB getting better each week. Would OU WANT Bradford to come back? Or would his return stunt Landry Jones's growth and maybe hamper the development of Drew Allen (or this new guy Blake Bell coming next yr who's supposed to be a physical freak)? Would Sam coming back next year have the same negative effect on the OU QB position that Jason White's 6th year had?

So let's hope Sam's shoulder heals well and he is ready come draft time--it's in his best interest as well as OU's.

This article sayes he didn't throw any interceptions saturday, but if I remember right he threw two, one of which Kenney should have cought even though it was slightly behind him on the crossing pattern.
