BCS cheats some deserving teams

Outpick the Picker: Think you can outpick the Picker? Take him on every week of the football season.

THANKS TO what seems like a criminally unfair Bowl Championship Series, what matters most about the college football season is again pretty much over by Halloween weekend.

Using the BCS system, the SEC gets what amounts to an automatic bid for the national championship game. The other spot is to be filled by the richest conference winner with the weakest schedule, which is to say, this season, Texas.

Florida versus Texas, set in October stone, and won't that be some 11-10 final-score fun.

And to think people don't want Congress to investigate this blatant discrimination because our politicians have something better to do. Like what? Cheating college students isn't a national issue?

Here's all that's left to chance in still another twisted season: Who gets cheated the most?

The only interesting poll is of victims.

BCS 2009 MOST CHEATED POLL

1. TCU.

2. Iowa.

3. Cincinnati.

4. USC.

5. Boise State.

As TCU goes through a tough enough schedule, this question arises: Could TCU stay with Florida or Texas?

Yes — as easily as Boise stayed with OU, and much the same way Utah stayed with Alabama.

Iowa stomped Penn State at Slaphappy Valley and still has to play at Ohio State. If it wins out, it is as deserving as Texas.

Cincy goes for an undefeated season at Pitt and could be an underdog there.

USC lost a road game without its quarterback. But great teams are supposed to find another way to win. The Trojan defense stinks.

Boise played nobody much and didn't even say it was sorry.

Bias has shrunk the college football season to around seven measly weeks.

Saturday

Texas (-9) at Oklahoma State: Whose Boo will be followed by a Hoo?

The flashiest thing on the field will be the Longhorn defense.

Quarterback McCoy is the leader of the Texas transition team, making NFL-quality form tackles after he throws ducky interceptions.

His tackle of an OU defender won his team the game.

How can a defensive back not be able to get around a quarterback?

To those who think OSU has no chance, Texas was pretty much equalled for a half by Wyoming, and almost lost to Colorado in Austin.

Texas by 2.

Kansas State at Bubble Screen U. (-25): If the OU defenders could only catch the stupid football, it would have been a contender.

If a great defense is such a cure-all, why have the Sooners lost three? The new OU quarterback has a long, long, long way to go, sideways passes haven't translated downfield.

The best in the Big 12 North might have to be decided by the courts — a six-way tie looks about right.

OU by 24.

SMU at Tulsa (-17): The TU coach seems a little put out by the sour reaction to his team's fourth-quarter fade.

What are fans supposed to do when a lead is lost late, celebrate? Hopefully the TU quarterback won't go as another sack, this Halloween. An incompletion plays much better than an 8-yard loss.

SMU remains one of the great mysteries of modern college football as it wallows in upscale mediocrity while neighbor TCU thrives.

TU by 20.

Mississippi (-4) at Auburn: Former TU coach Gus misses his old conference.

Miss by 3.

Nebraska (-12) at Baylor: Having nine turnovers and only giving up nine points, perhaps the Nebraska defense should invite some KU hoop recruits to rough up the Husker offense.

Nebraska by 14.

Georgia at Florida (-16): Tebow finally showing signs that he has been hit hard approximately a thousand, three hundred times in his storied career: his jump passes have only one foot off ground.

Florida by 17.

Missouri (-3 1/2) at Colorado: Missouri tried to throw in the towel, but it was intercepted.

Colorado by 2.

Kansas at Texas Tech (-7 1/2): Not a defender in sight.

Tech by 10.

South Carolina at Tennessee (-5 1/2): It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a pass completion.

Tennessee by 1.

USC (-3) at Oregon: Now that Tebow is several inches shorter, USC has become the media darling, thanks to Carroll's patented kissy-face orchestrating of the press.

Trojan frosh quarterback is a future Heisman winner.

USC, 31-30.

Sunday

Denver at Baltimore (-3 1/2): Isn't it about time somebody at Denver was praised for firing lousy coach Shanahan and dumping pitiful quarterback Cutler?

Baltimore by 6.

Minnesota at Green Bay (-3): Favre boos could be heard in neighboring states.

Rain, snow showers possible, could take Bret six hours to get loose.

Green Bay by 6.

Miami at the Jets (-3 1/2): The Miami quarterback couldn't even play at Michigan.

Jets by 10.

Seattle at Dallas (-9 1/2): Seattle is so bad, the fans wouldn't mind having the NBA team back.

Dallas by 10.

Giants at the Eagles (-2): Waiting on Dallas.

Giants by 2.

Monday

Atlanta at New Orleans (-9): What's so different about NO since last year?

Its opponents are weaker.

NO by 10.

I agree with the article for the most part. Not about USC. I do think that the NCAA, with the help of ESPN, is pushing for a UF VS UT/USC NCG. The BCS needs to be canx'd and a 16 seed playoff inserted. It can't be that hard to make considering Div 1 is the ONLY football format without a playoff. They can also make an NIT type too. More football is always a good thing.

What's sad is that if they win out, Cincy and Iowa will have beaten a better schedule than Texas, and arguably TCU will have as well.

But you're way off on one game, picker. Tulsa always looks on paper like they should beat SMU by 20, but that game is always close. Tulsa by 6.

Did the picker imply that the SEC is undeserving of the automatic bid? As I recall, the SEC has never lost a BCS championship game.

I think the picker should focus on the embarrassing Big 12 and their BCS record/performance. And if the BCS wouldn't have screwed Auburn out of being in the NC game in 2004-5, the SEC would be 6-0 in BCS national championships. Instead I got to watch USC hang 55 on a very undeserving OU.

As for OU and Alabama's losses to BSU and Utah, those games have the exact same bearing on college football as the independence bowl or the humanitarian bowl. A playoff is the only answer.

Exactly. Neither Oklahoma nor Alabama went into either of those games with a whole lot of interest. When you're a Sooner, it's the national championship, or it just doesn't matter.

When a team takes 45-50 days off between games, it usually takes the first half before everybody is ready to play....

What's the purpose of bowl games anymore, they don't mean anything....January 1st used to be a great day for FOOTBALL, everybody played that day and then the season was over, all the minor bowl had their place in the two weeks before Jan. 1st....Now, who plays who when, where, what, why....

A playoff would be nice, but if they can't do that then at least return January 1st to the FOOTBALL FANS....They say it's about MONEY, if it was then a playoff would be in place....

Now all the fans get is BORED....

I remember one January 1st when OU had no chance of winning the National Championship, by the time the Orange Bowl came on that night, all OU had to do was beat Arkansas....

Arkansas & Lou Holtz kicked OU tail that night, but at least the chance was there, that morning there was no chance....Then the New Year's Day bowl games began....

Lovethemsooners, are you kidding me?! The excuses are still rolling in for the Boise State debacle?

Why don't you go ask Coach Stoops if he thought that game mattered or not. Ask him if he only did half a coaching job because "only National Championships matter."

You're ridiculous.

BLA, Tulsa (10/29/2009 9:23:50 AM)
I agree with the Picker. The line about KU's basketball team beating up the offense is hysterical.

The perception of the SEC is that the teams at the top are great and those below them are really good. That is not the case this year. No one can score any points, even though everyone thinks Tebow and Jevon Snead are Heisman contenders. Are you kidding me? Tebow wouldn't be able to complete a pass in the NFL. This year he looks slow and like a FB. Heck, Florida's offense is the wildcat every down! Watching the games, I'm not impressed with any of the teams really. Arkansas is probably as good as any of the teams in the conference, but they lack experience and a little focus.

Second, Texas is really good, but it almost seems like they play a hang in there and we'll get them with the halftime adjustments. Texas has pretty much dominated everyone in the second half without exception. At this point, why isn't Jordan Shipley a Heisman contender, best player on one of the best teams.

USC: Top to bottom the best team. The defense is actually really good but Ja'Quizz Rogers (Oregon St.) is an absolute stud that no one really knows or hears about because he plays on a mediocre team on the West Coast. He can make any team look bad.

The Big 10 is a joke. I don't care if Iowa goes undefeated, the Big 10 is barely a level above C-USA in terms of talent. Houston would give teams in the Big 10 an absolute fit with their speed and passing. ECU would make life miserable for Big 10 teams with their defense. Actually, ECU would fit right in in the Big 10, all D, no O.

Last, Tennessee is a much better team than anyone gives them credit for. The defense is stout, their running game is really good. Once they are able to balance out with even a medium grade passing attack, Tennessee will give fits to Florida, 'Bama, and LSU.

I for one, have wanted a playoff for years.

love 918: You can't judge the current season by looking into the past. If it were like that then it should SEC team vs USC for the NCG every year right? Things go in cycles and the SEC is the new kid on the block.

I don't think anyone said a great defense is a cure-all. That being said, if you can't see the greatness of the OU defense and what it has meant to them this year, you're clueless. Also, thanks to BLA for his exhaustive breakdown of college football. Normally I would watch College Football Live but now I can just read his posts.

Didnt Seattle beat 4-3 Jacksonville 41-0??! I dont know because the NFL sucks but I check the scores... It's not Landry Jones' fault they only throw it sideways, talk to the arrogant arse calling the plays. The reason TCU is great and SMU stinks is because Gary Patterson can coach some defense, contrary to the Pick, that wins alot of games.

The BCS talk make me sick. Whoever thought you can pick a champion by vote. The game is played on the field. If not why are the games played at all. Just vote each week to see who won the the game. Maybe the sports people could learn to keep the voting for the winner exciting, maybe not. Maybe they could charge 10.00 a vote and the team bringing in the most money would be #1.

billy i didnt read your comment until after mine posted, haha that is hilarious man! 8 team playoff would be incredibly easy to do. Doesn't the BCS realize they would make just as much money if not more? and the same for all of the bowl game sites that would participate? I thought they were greedy.... very confusing stuff people. oh well, let's take care of Texas Pokes so I can be happy about something CF related!

Soonerdj, yes you can judge the current season by the past. Until the SEC loses a BCS championship...there is no reason that top teams in the country from that conference should not automatically be in the NC.

Now your team, for example, consistently gets in big games because people judge their past seasons instead of current performance. Also, your team was 3-3 last week and ranked in the top 25. Their season is most definitely defined by the past.

How is the SEC the new kid on the block?

Anti-rube: Cincy, Iowa and TCU are all as deserving as Texas. Cincy at Pitt, Iowa at Ohio State, those two are tough.

Love: You're right, nothing even comes close to the SEC, so it deserves to keep the automatic bid. Mixing in a nice quarterback every decade or so would be pleasant.

BLG: USC has played pretty sorry defense all year. The fact is, it lost a game, and shouldn't be voted ahead of anybody decent and
undefeated.

Steff: Greatest defense in the country, three losses.

Billy Boy: Did you know that one of the major computers is in Oklahoma?

I think that a set of "minor bowls" chould make the first set of playoff runs, then a mid-set makes the final selections and the last four set the championship picture. That would be 8 teams to set the NC. Add one more week and that becomes 16. Sixteen should not be necessary - the polls ought to at least pick the NC from the top 8. Let the NCAA work out the details, but this is the picture. The schedule would be extended so compensate by cutting the regular season a couple of games and let the non-playoff teams schedule their last two based on how they want to and can arrange with other non-playoff teams. Or the NCAA could go whole hog and schedule the last two of all teams based on how they played their season - shudder the thought since we don't need more power to the NCAA!
