OU-Nebraska has lost luster
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops argues a call. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World

NORMAN — The Battle of the Big Reds? Hardly.
Saturday's 85th Oklahoma-Nebraska game, one of college football's most historic rivalries, might best be described this season as the Battle of the Mediocre Reds.
Need proof? The last time both teams entered this contest still needing a win to become bowl eligible was long before six victories were even required to advance to post-season play.
OU stood 3-5 and Nebraska 3-5-1 when the two collided on Nov. 25, 1961 in Lincoln, when the Sooners slugged their way to a 21-14 win before a Memorial Stadium crowd of 26,139.
Starting in 1962, at least one team had win No. 6 by midseason. And more often than not, both rolled into their late-season meetings with a chance to reach double-digit victories and a major bowl bid.
It's taken 48 years for them to hit the skids the same season. But that's where the two long-time rivals will find themselves for the 7 p.m. contest in Lincoln. They have identical 5-3 overall records, while OU is 3-1 in the Big 12 race and the Cornhuskers 2-2.
"It's a big one; the Battle of the Big Reds" OU cornerback Dominique Franks said Tuesday. "You don't have to say too much after you say Oklahoma versus Nebraska."
Franks has somewhat of a point. The OU-Nebraska mystique remains strong
enough that ABC decided to showcase the contest in prime time on a split-national telecast. And the network's honchos waited until Sunday to select the game, so they knew the contest wouldn't carry the significance it once did.
Ironically, several of the players who made the series so special will attend the game. Nebraska officials have invited every major award winner from both schools to gather for a private dinner Friday night and to be honored at halftime.
So, when OU boards its charter flight Friday, the traveling party will include Heisman Trophy winners Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White and Sam Bradford. Other OU award winners who will either be on the charter or join their fellow Sooners in Lincoln, include Greg Pruitt, Joe Washington, Tom Brahaney, Tony Casillas, Brian Bosworth, Rickey Dixon, Derrick Strait and OU assistant Josh Heupel.
Billed as the "Celebration of Greatness," the gathering was put together by Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne as a way to thank Sooner AD Joe Castiglione for arranging a reunion at last season's contest in Norman for players from the 1971 Game of Century.
Osborne, the Huskers' coach for 25 seasons, will be joined by his long-time nemesis and good friend, ex-Sooner coach Barry Switzer, for the event that will feature at least 22 players who helped add to the series' rich tradition.
OU fans could rightfully contend the Sooners would be 8-0 if Bradford (shoulder) and tight end Jermaine Gresham (knee) weren't lost for the season. And, despite the loss of the two All-Americans, they're only five points from being undefeated.
Nebraska fans could counter by arguing the Huskers should be no worse than 7-1. There was a heartbreaking 16-15 loss on the last play at Virginia Tech, and the 9-7 debacle against Iowa State, when the Huskers gave the Cyclones the ball eight times on turnovers.
But statistics don't lie. Those six losses are reality, as are the 5-3 records.
No wonder OU coach Bob Stoops, when asked about the series, said "there's no question it's changed."
Instead of the so-so records, Stoops was talking about the fact the Big Red shootouts are no longer a yearly event.
With the formation of the Big 12, the scheduling format dictates that the two teams do not meet for a two-year period because they are in opposite divisions. It also means they meet on the other team's home field every four years instead of every other season.
"There's a lot of amazing tradition and history," said Stoops, who showed his players film clips Monday of some previous Big Red Battles that had national championship implications. "I always wonder if our freshmen, sophomores and guys who haven't been around very long have a true understanding of the tradition of that (Nebraska) program."
OU's slump figures to be short-lived. Bradford's injury has forced redshirt freshman Landry Jones to grow up in a hurry, which bodes well long term for a young, improving Sooner team.
Nebraska is unquestionably back on track to respectability under second-year coach Bo Pelini, who was on Stoops' staff for one season. But consecutive home losses to Iowa State and Texas Tech have tempered the preseason enthusiasm about Pelini's rebuilding process being ahead of schedule.
Stoops, who joked that he has the same no-nonsense, fiery, to-the-point personality as Pelini because the lifelong friends grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, was certainly blunt yesterday when asked if he hopes Nebraska regains its powerhouse stature.
"I'd rather they didn't," said Stoops, who obviously wants to continue dominating the Big 12 like he has, winning a record six league championships in his first 10 seasons.
But traditionalists long for those celebratory times of greatness. A return to those November days when the two Big Reds were battling for stakes much larger than becoming bowl eligible.

Football fans care, gba.
As a Nebraska grad and life long Husker fan I long for the days that OU and NU slug it out at seasons end to see who represents the conference. Husker fans have always held a love hate relationship with the Sooners.
I remember when OU came to Lincoln one season. Nebraska was ranked #1, Oklahoma #2 and that blasted Sooner magic upturned our Championship game hopes. As upset as we were, we still invited a group of Sooner fans back to our fraternity house for post game revelry. Mutual RESPECT added to the atmosphere.
Years later I was at the game again enjoying a buddy's skybox in Lincoln. Without warning, inexplicably, into the skybox wanders Coach Switzer. Every one of us, Husker fans, simply said, "Hey, coach". He sampled some of our potluck, mingled for a while and wandered off. How many schools would allow a former "hated" rival coach to have such liberty that he could go any place he pleased within the Husker facilities?
Things like that are just a couple of examples why I miss the days of the Both Big Reds Running the conference.
GO BIG RED!! (scarlet red, that is)

Dave mentions the Nov. 21, 1961 game in Lincoln. I was standing on the OU 50 yd. sideline at the end of the game. Bud Wilkinson, wearing a fedora and long gray top coat, met Bill Jennings, whom he intensely disliked, at mid-field for a handshake. No words were spoken, no apparent eye contact, and both immediately turned away. Heading southeast Wilkinson broke into a jog pumping his fists in the air. Head down, Jennings briskly walked away north, he was fired the next day. Soon thereafter Bob Devaney came on board.

The big difference here is that Nebraska fans are considered some of the nation's most intelligent and gracious.
OU's are not.
"OU fans could rightfully contend the Sooners would be 8-0 if Bradford (shoulder) and tight end Jermaine Gresham (knee) weren't lost for the season. And, despite the loss of the two All-Americans, they're only five points from being undefeated."
OU was behind BYU with Bradford still in the game and healthy. That arguement is a perfect example of OU fan's unrealistic excuses for another big swoon.
OU had a new line coming in, but then again, I thought OU just reloaded.
What happened to all of the Top 10 recruiting classes?
Is it coaching?
Well, Swooner fans do love to lay blame on someone or something. There's always a plutora of excuses.
This story is nothing more than a wishful memory of what used to be.
It's history.
Nothing more.

OU will likely win this game, because Nebraska has fallen even more than OU, but this article does a good job in showing how dynasties in football, or any other sport for that matter, don't last forever. Remember when the Royals were the big nemesis of the Yankees in the late 70's and in the 80's? Remember the Miami Dolphins in the 70's? It is refreshing to see other teams beating the pants off of OU. OU fans will try to say that they have lost their 3 games by very few points, but we all know that if UT was losing with embarrassment like OU, the OU fans would pour it on them --- right? OU will be back with their swagger, but probably more prematurely than the swagger is earned.

You just wish your school HAD a history that mattered to anyone outside Stoolwater, DDD. And speaking of excuses, are you still trying to blame the refs for that thumping you guys received last weekend? Just out of curiosity, how many sq. ft. you got there in Vail? Must have a really good job or a nice trust fund. I'm guessing it's the latter since you chose to use the word "plutora", which is not a word. I think you meant to use the word "plethora", didn't you? You'd probably make the "excuse" that it was a typo if you hadn't misspelled it so badly.

Looks like you did okay with your spelling, unbiased. You get a star. And yes, the intent of my comment WAS just merely wanting to make fun of Dan. Was there something about it that caused you to think otherwise? Sometimes I make positive and constructive comments about certain subjects (like your previous post that was verrrrry positive and constructive) and sometimes I just give people (usually OSWho or Texas fans) back the crap that they throw. This was one of those crap-givin times. Check around on some of the other articles, though, because I think I've made some positive and constructive ones recently.

OU will win by 4 TD's probably on NU turnovers.
I do think our Husker defense will be good but we are at least 2 years away from a functional offense.
At least BO got our defense on track but give him a couple years for the offense then we can be competitive.
But the game Sat. will see a Sooner victory.

I'm with the Bug. OU/Nebraska has been a great series of two outstanding schools. Switzer was right when he said "We bring out the best in each other." OU/Texas is a good substitute and if the Aggies keep improving that series could be good too.
I would like to see the big XII be more competitive. I would like to see all the Big XII game be tough. That would better prepare the Sooners for bowl games.
OSU has had several very good coaches which left them for "better" opportunities. Gundy is a good coach but he is still learning. I hpoe OSU has the sense to stick with him.
I believe the better the compition is the better OU will be on the national stage.
Keep up the good work BOB. Go Sooners

Not sure who said it but the loss of Gresham was bigger than losing Bradford...at least imo. Gresham caught about 70 passes last year and he loosened up the opposing defenses big time. I'd be surprised if OU's current tight ends have caught more than 10 passes this year.

OU/Nebraska was an annual event that made Thanksgiving even greater. Ending it was a bad idea!
This is a big game this year. If Sitter and some can't see that, they're missing the big picture. Some games are about the teams, not the records. OU/OSU is big every year. OU/Texas is big every year. OU/Nebraska is huge anytime we play!

Dear Unbiasedfan,
Please actually check your facts before writing. OU only trailed BYU for the remaining 3:03 of the game. Bradford was hurt in the second quarter, with OU in position to regain the lead (which they did on the following play.
I as well as every other OU fan admit that the offensive line was unprepared and that responsibility lies with the coaches. But that doesn't change the fact that with Gresham and Bradford healthy, we are 8-0, ranked #1, and cruising to Pasadena for a matchup against a (weaker) Florida or Alabama team.
Not only do you completely ignore the Gresham injury, which was in some ways more significant than Bradford's, but you do fail to take into account the loss of a defending HEISMAN winner on a offense. Considering the game came down to the last drive, having a HEISMAN winner in your backfield would probably mean a few extra yards, a closer kick, and a victory over BYU.
Regardless of your bias, OU is still a top five program, will be the favorite to win the Big 12 next season and quite possibly play for a national title.
