OU: Three Storylines

OU's Tress Way (36) watches a miss against Nebraska in Lincoln, NE, Nov. 7, 2009. STEPHEN PINGRY / Tulsa World

Record breaker: After already setting the school record for TD passes in a game (six), Landry Jones on Saturday set another OU mark: most interceptions in a game. Jones' five picks at Nebraska marked the first time since 1970 OU had five passes intercepted — three by Jack Mildren, two by Dave Robertson. One week later, Chuck Fairbanks installed the wishbone.

Defensive domination: It could be argued that OU's defense has never been better under Brent Venables than it was in Lincoln. Against a solid (not great) offense, OU gave up just one first down in the first half and one third-down conversion the whole game (that on a penalty). Holding Nebraska to 180 yards is a monumental feat.

Kick off: Tress Way wasn't the answer after all. Way replaced Jimmy Stevens as OU's placekicker, but the first time his team needed points, he went wide right (46 yards), got one blocked (45), made a short one (28) and went wide left (42). With two kickers on scholarship, it seems unlikely Bob Stoops would award another. Way is outgoing and confident; Stevens is reserved and admitted games made him nervous. Competition may be wide open once more.

Here are my 3 storylines:

1) OU is a top 10 program. Why can't we get great placekickers?

2) 2nd down with 34 seconds left. Why did Jones throw a hail mary when he could have thrown a 15 - 20 yd pass?

3) Why do our players continue to make stupid mistakes and get stupid penalties?

When you have a coach that makes 4 million a year, and his good friends as his asst. coaches, it makes it a little easier to understand. TCU is a small school, and I believe they are ranked 4th. I think they have lost that fire and hunger you really need to have a great team. Go Sooners.

At least we know that the sides of barns, in and around the state of Oklahoma, are safe from being hit by kicked footballs.
