Irish eyes on Stoops again? Wait just a second

OU coach Bob Stoops (right) could be in the mix along with Iowacoach Kirk Ferentz to replace Charlie Weis at Notre Dame — ifWeis doesn’t return in 2010. MIKE SIMONS / Tulsa World

OU analysis: Involving Ryan Broyles and DeMarco Murray lessens Landry Jones’ load.

Well, it has begun.

Bob Stoops to Notre Dame.

We seem to hear this about every two or three years. Yes, Stoops is Irish. Yes, Stoops is Catholic. Yes, Stoops could recruit the heck out of the Ohio and Pennsylvania hotbeds that have long fed the Notre Dame talent pool.

And yes, it seems Fighting Irish coach Charlie Weis is on the proverbial hot seat.

I first heard the latest rumor two weeks ago after Weis’ team lost again to Navy. Then I got a call from a World staffer about more press box rumblings. Then, these two items from Sunday’s postmortem of the Irish’s latest defeat.

From the Chicago Sun Times: “As much as Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis wanted to make this game about his team, the 27-22 loss to No. 8 Pittsburgh will serve as more evidence for those who want Weis’ tenure as Irish coach to end.

“If athletic director Jack Swarbrick decides Weis’ Notre Dame career is over after his fifth season, a source said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz will be in the mix to replace him. The source said Stoops has told confidants he would be interested in talking to the Irish.

“Weis wasn’t asked directly about his future after the game, but he said he was focused on his players.

"They just lost a tough game to a good team,’’ he said. ‘’Right now, I’m more worried about getting them out of the tank [mentally]."

And this from the Chicago Tribune: “It’s not like you don’t evaluate during the year; you evaluate all year,” Swarbrick said. “But my practice is to make sure I’ve got the full season’s worth of information and then conclude the evaluation.”

“There will be much to discuss. The latest deflation saddled Weis with the same overall record as Bob Davie (35-25) and made Notre Dame 0-for-its-last-8 against top 10 teams under Weis’ watch.

“Were change afoot or not, it would seem to behoove administrators to work quickly and decisively. But Swarbrick currently doesn’t see reason to veer much from last year’s timeline, when he met with Weis on the Tuesday after a season-ending evisceration at USC.

“I thought from a perspective of timing and communication, last year’s process worked well,” Swarbrick said.

Another element that won’t change: The irrelevance of Weis’ buyout. It wasn’t an issue as the Irish stumbled to a 6-6 regular season in 2008. The latest report pegs the buyout at $18 million, but regardless it’s “not a factor” again in 2009, according to Swarbrick.”

And from the Oklahoma perspective, consider that Stoops is on the stretch run of his most challenging season yet. He told me before the season began that chasing the three-nationalchampionship legacies of Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer was important to him, though not his driving force. Now, with three months to reflect on losing Sam Bradford, Jermaine Gresham and a fistful of games, who knows what Stoops is thinking? ... But think about it. If Stoops was ever going to take another college job, would this be the perfect storm?

Why would they want Stoops? Has the Notre Dame job really gotten that bad?

Why would Stoops go to the Golden Dome, when he has everything Golden at OU.

So you have to have attended OU in order to be a fan ? That is an odd concept. I did not attend but have been a loyal fan during good times and bad in spite of the fact I did not go to OU. What is the logic in your statement "borninkenya" ?

The guy has a doctored picture of Barack Obama in what looks to be Kenyan attire, and his screen name is "borninkenya." You are asking him to explain his logic? Let me know how that works out for you, because I am guessing he's not a person who operates logically.

Just like ousoonerfan1971, I question your reasoning on fans of OU who have never been on campus or attended a OU football game. I have been a lifelong resident of Louisiana, since 1958 actually, with absolutely no ties to Oklahoma or OU. Nonetheless, I have been a die-hard OU fan since 1966 when Bob Warmack was their QB and Eddie Hinton their running back. I fly two OU flags year round in the center of bleedheart LSU fans and have endured their hateful words against the Sooners since 2003. I always have an OU hat on, win or lose, and I know nearly every detail concerning OU football since 1967. That's not a "jump on or off the bandwagon" fan. Most folks in Louisiana who jumped on their bandwagon still think Saban is the coach.

If Bob leaves, it would be because of the undeserved heat he is taking because of a season full of injuries. All the fair weather fans have short memories I remember how happy I was to make it to a bowl game in 99 and have a 7-5 record. If he leaves all these will be real unhappy come next season

It would not surprise me if Stoops left and wend to ND...it's the right timing and what coach could resist the chance to try for a NC at Notre Dame, it has and always will have the sigle greatest college tradition and legacy. No matter if they have a losing season, players all over the country want to play for the Irish. There's just something mystifying about Notre Dame. And considering the ND pull that comes from the state of Oklahoma, I'd be willing to bet that if they really want Stoops, there would be nothing stoping the Irish from having him.

Stoops is not going any where. Its just the media that wants him to go so they start stories like this to get the fans up in arms and worried.

You plumbers and tow truck drivers, and what have you, are more than welcome to attend OU sporting events and “hoot and holler,” as you simple people are apt to do, with your small words and gapped teeth. Just be sure to wash (or warsh yer hands) before you leave the lavatory (or terlet).

borninKenya: "The world is full of OU fans who never set foot on the campus except for a football game. These are the worst ones."

"It is a fact that a large percentage of OU fans did not go to the school. That's all I said. Nothing wrong with that, is there?"

Actually you DID say there's something wrong with OU fans who didn't go there, though you didn't say what that was.

DelawareSooner-what exactly is the percentage of OU fans that attended OU and what is the percentage of OU fans that graduated from OU?

After you let us know those figures, then let us know the deviation from the average figure that OU is from the rest of the NCAA.

Do you have the facts to support your nonsense?

bruinsooner - I was quoting borninkenya with those first two paragraphs, and commenting on his/her nonsense in the third.

I cannot tell you where borninkenya comes up with his/her nonsense.

If I were to guess, I'd say OU's fanbase is not that different from the NCAA average.

Masked Assassin - I am indeed a Sooner fan (graduated frm OU in '05). I'm pretty sure only borninKenya cares about OU fans' credentials. I was pointing out that biK was contradicting him/herself with the silliness about who is/isn't an OU fan.

Even if he did leave, who could blame him after the way every OCD-riddled-control-freak-redneck in the state has expressed their need for his head to be removed after not being a NC contender this year. What with their, "How dare he not be perfect every single year!"- mentality, why would he stay? Who wants to be expected to answer to the demanded perfection of all those ignorant clowns year after year after year? No wonder he acts like its getting old. I hear so many people proclaim if OU doesn't win the National Championship the season is then a failure.....

If only they applied those type of standards to their real everyday lives...Fans.

Also he seems to be pretty attached to his staff and it would take one giant offer for him to ask them to all uproot their homes and go.

Maybe ND will ask Wilson instead.

Or Bob does go and Cale Gundy is promoted to head coach and a new twist is added to Bedlam. A new definition to the term, "sibling rivalry" in Oklahoma. Bedlam's battle of the Brothers Gundy!

And Heupel to Offense Coodinater!

Hey, dont go anywhere Stoops! Stoops you have a chance to have one of the greatest stories of college football. Its like Bobby Bowden said " If you get to the big game enough you'll win one" If the Florida State Alums would stay out of Bowdens locker room and quit hiring coaches in waiting, there might not be a problem. And maybe if we as fans were a little better and quit trying to send an individual to the choppin block everytime we lose, just maybe we might make one aspect of players and coaches lives a litter easier. These guys dont owe explanations why they are losing. I promise there is no one more upset than they are! BOOMER SOONER!!

For Stoops to go to ND would be stupid. Besides, one writer calls it "Big 10 County". That's a slap in the face, since the Big-10 sucks bad in football. ND is a prestigious school, but anyone already at OU would step down going to ND or even Texas, which is a REAL hole in the ground.

Cool Tool-you need to keep your opinion to yourself. Sounds like you received an beating at some point and time from one of our (as you say) tow truck drivers or plumbers. I do not understand how a supposedly educated person such as yourself, came up with such a profound conclusion that if you are from Oklahoma that you are a red-neck. Have I used to many large words for you. Keep your opinions in Roswell

Although I am a Nebraska fan I believe that it would be a shame for Stoops to leave. He's the HC of one of the best programs in the country with great tradition. Ya'll should be thankful you have such a great coach. Good luck with the rest of the season and go NU & OU.
