OU Notebook: Chicken Tech?
Oklahoma's Jeremy Beal (left) and Gerald McCoy sack Grant Gregory of Kansas State in October. MIKE SIMONS / Tulsa World
By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer

Texas Tech fans were once infamous for throwing tortillas at games. That practice has been curbed, but a few still find their way onto the turf at Jones Stadium. This, apparently, is news to Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
"They throw tortillas?" McCoy said. "They better not throw me one. I'll be hungry. I'll eat it."
Actually, if Red Raider fans want to throw food, McCoy has a menu suggestion.
"They need to throw chicken," he said. "Hey, if they threw fried chicken — shoot, I'll provoke 'em on purpose. Aaahhh! Chomp!"
Getting wild:
The OU offense versus Texas A&M renewed the wildcat formation, where DeMarco Murray or Ryan Broyles takes the center snap and just gets creative. Quarterback Landry Jones simply splits out wide on the play and the rest of the Sooners play 10-on-10.
"Usually I just try to get off the ball and try to get in the way of someone out there," Jones said.
Any threat of Jones running a route?
"Oh no. No, no," Jones said.
So what does he do when he splits out wide?
"Sometimes I just kind of come off the ball and get in the way of the corner," he said. "Sometimes I kind of just like to sit back and watch them run, see those guys play. Those guys are incredible."
Ever worry that the corner will take a cheap shot?
"No, I try to get out of the way of that, if that guy's coming down on me," he said. "Or I might even try to lock on to them and try to get them down."
Wild Sooner:
When Darren McFadden brought the Wildcat formation in vogue at Arkansas, part of the threat was that he could throw a pass, which frequently resulted in a touchdown.
Is there any chance Murray might throw?
"I'm not sure yet," Murray said.
Is Murray a good passer?
"I'm not sure yet," Murray said.
Get the split:
One thing that makes Texas Tech's offense so unique is the 2- and 3-yard splits by the offensive line. The idea is to spread a defense from sideline to sideline, which creates more space for offensive players to get free. But the Sooners have never had problems with it.
"Splits are just an illusion to our defensive line," said defensive tackle Adrian Taylor. "It doesn't really affect the way we play. It might trick a lot of other schools, but it don't fool us at all."
It's a snap:
Why so many false start penalties by Oklahoma's offensive line? Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson doesn't have an answer.
"We're not trying to be cute with the snap count," Wilson said. "We don't get up there and change it a great deal. There are probably some junior high teams that could be more complicated than what we try to do. We're not trying to draw guys offside. It's not like a hard count or a bluff."

Good luck with your Wildcat formation...all Tech needs to do is bury Landry once and with OU's depth situation the game is over. This is a game to really show how tough OU is so be sure to run up the score with the 1st. Team in the whole game. All OU needs now is a few more injuries to finish off the season. Pretty dumb and classless act at A&M running up the score. Lucky OU did not get a few injuries.

The reason the o-line at OU continues to jump is they make those 300 pounders sit in their stance forever while Heupel and Gundy signal the play in, usually too late (BYU) and then Jones has to tell the play to the whole o-line. Would be better if the o-line learned the signals as well, which many teams who run the no huddle do much more efficiently than OU.

Hello Richard: Fire Little Game Bob? Come on buddy. You must be an OU hater. Well, we have lost a few big games lately but we have straight up dominated the Big 12 as of late and since 2000, have been in the top five for most wins in the nation. Facts are facts and OU will be back in the mix next year. Keep on hating OU, or being jealous.

True: however, you need to win some big games in order to play in BCS bowls. Question, would you rather have your team play in the "nobody watches or cares" bowl and win? Or, play in the championship and lose?

Has to be better than Coach Venables. Does any other people out there wonder why he has no been taken as a head coach? I know the exact reason.

Richard: In case you havn't been watching: Venables has had a great year and is a solid coach. He has had offers but has decided to stay at OU. His kids love it here and likes to speak at churches all over the state. I don't see your reason to go after Venables when all he has produced is quality defense. Watch Saturday.

Hello Richard: I'll give you the K-State game: Howevr, OU's Defense gave up:
14 to BYU
21 at Miami
7 to Baylor
16 to Texas
13 at Kansas
10 at Nebraska (off turnovers mind you)
10 to A&M
Now that is "great" defense my friend.

Dude are you serious. Those teams are called the Big 12! Yes, defense does win championships and unfortunalty OU's D has been ruined by their subpar offense. If you are seriuosly saying that is a weak schedule you are wrong sir. OU played a tough nonconference schedule and if you look at the defensive statistics:
6th in the nation in total Defense
5th in rushing defense
18th pass defense
5th in scoring defense
13th in interceptions
9th in pass efficiency
2nd in tackles for loss
2nd in sacks
7th in first down defense
2nd red zone defense
= pretty freakin good
The Offense "Not So Much". Richard, i'm crushing you on this defense debate sir. Good Day sir
