Is Stoops leaving OU? Don't count on it
Oklahoma's Bob Stoops argues a call during their football game against Texas A&M Nov. 14, 2009. MIKE SIMONS / Tulsa World

Shortly after Oklahoma crushed Texas A&M last week, it was jokingly suggested to Bob Stoops via a text message that the lopsided win probably bought him another week of security from those fickle fans calling for his head.
"I bet I can find a job," OU's coach cracked in his return message following the 65-10 victory.
Ya think?
Presto. The next day's Chicago Sun-Times reported Notre Dame might offer Stoops employment if Charlie Weis is sacked. The newspaper indicated Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick would be interested in talking to Stoops if he decides to make a change.
Stoops has spent much of this week shooting down the Sun-Times' claim that he has told confidants he would be interested in talking to the Irish.
If my scorecard is correct, I believe this is the third time in Stoops' 11 years at OU that he's been mentioned as a frontrunner for the Notre Dame opening. It started when Bob Davie was fired after the 2001 season, resumed when Ty Willingham lasted only three seasons as Davie's replacement, and has resurfaced once again now that Weis is on the hot seat.
The repeated Stoops-to-Notre Dame rumors have been the source of some running jokes between the coach and myself over the years. Ironically, it was a topic of discussion a few days before the Sun-Times story ran.
When the nitwits with short memories started coming out of the woodwork and after Stoops following an ugly 10-3 loss at Nebraska, I told him he should tell his critics what they can do with their job and bolt for Notre Dame if Weis is fired.
But I wasn't joking. Those of us who covered every day of the decade of darkness that engulfed OU after Barry Switzer's forced resignation fully appreciate the remarkable job Stoops has done.
Stoops isn't above criticism, a tactic I've employed when necessary. But fired? Those of us who could write a book on the miserable Gibbs-Schnellenberger-Blake years because we lived them find the idea of getting rid of Stoops repulsive.
"It's no different there (Notre Dame) or anywhere else," Stoops said of the fan unrest that becomes a national pastime each November, when some teams don't live up to preseason expectations.
Yes, OU fans, I understand those crackpots who want Stoops gone are definitely in the minority. So don't waste your time shooting me an angry e-mail or adding anonymous online comments to this column, because I "get it."
I also get this: Stoops never forgets that the vast majority of Sooners fans have long memories. He knows they will never forget the work he's done in pulling the program out of those dark days and putting it in the brightness of the national spotlight.
He also appreciates it that OU officials have been proactive throughout his tenure, giving him raises and bonuses to ward off the advances of the Notre Dames and Floridas of the college world, and NFL teams like Cleveland, Dallas and Denver.
But cheap shots and clueless, unwarranted criticism can eventually take a toll on any coach. Especially one who is in Stoops' current situation — fighting his backside off to make something positive out of his hardest season at OU.
Like most coaches, Stoops claims he doesn't pay attention to what's being written or said in the media, or by those courage-challenged bozos who use phony names to rip him online. But he knows what's going on, including polls questioning his future at OU.
His darkest hours at OU undoubtedly came on the heels of his second consecutive Fiesta Bowl loss. When West Virginia whipped the favored Sooners a year after Boise State had pulled off the upset of the season in the same Arizona stadium, Stoops was lambasted by the national media and more than a few frustrated Sooner supporters.
Stoops often quickly said "you should see the stack of mail on my desk from people who are supportive."
But he also confided that one fan sent him Rudyard Kipling's classic poem "If," and he read it several times, particularly these words: "If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same."
In less than a month, he had gone from being hailed as a genius when OU became the first school to win back-to-back Big 12 titles by whipping No. 1-ranked Missouri, to being ridiculed after the disaster of the West Virginia game.
Stoops, who believes even the most successful coach can wear out his welcome at a school, has said more than once when he's been the target of angry fans, "Now you know why I sometimes say that maybe it's time to do something else."
If Notre Dame comes calling, has that time arrived for Stoops at OU? No, I strongly believe he isn't going anywhere for several reasons. The two biggest being OU President David Boren and athletic director Joe Castiglione.
"My bosses couldn't be better," Stoops has often said.
Stoops knows if OU (6-4, 4-2 Big 12) loses today for a third straight time at Texas Tech (6-4, 3-3), that the anger and criticism that subsided after the 55-point whipping of A&M will be back in full force from some corners.
But Stoops is secure in the knowledge that Boren and Castiglione will never turn on him. They understand what he's done for OU and what he means to the university's future.
"We have a great relationship built on trust, respect, excellent communication, and a shared vision for the program," Castiglione wrote about Stoops in an e-mail. "He is perfect for OU and vice versa."
Perfect enough that I bet he could find another job if that's what he wants.

dave,
we courage-challanged bozos, have real jobs,we are ditch diggers, warehouse workers, utility workers, bus drivers, firemen, policemen, construction workers, and etc. we do not have to sign our names on posts if we chose not to do so,you do,you get paid to sit and write, just as we have to sign h.r. forms, memos, time cards and etc.it is part of your job, doubt you would be able to do many of our jobs and sign off on it,one thing you left out of this article....the emerging pattern of Stoop led teams failing to win big games, most programs will let it slide for a period of time, but sonner or later any program has to look at the cause,it's not the players,as college personell change yearly, the coaching staff is the one constant,O.U. is no different,no matter what O.U.'s regular season record is,it is a fact the coaching staff DOES NOT win the big one,the proofs in the pudding !!!!

Stoops wouldn't last three years at Notre Dame.
He shouldn't leave OU. He should go to WORK!

Your comments, which contain numerous spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, including misspelling Coach Stoops’ name, leave me nauseous. Your ignorance is now a matter of public record and I am certain the University will not miss your contributions, should you choose not to renew your season tickets. I assure you the tickets will be scooped up immediately by loyal Sooner fans who appreciate all Bob Stoops has done for our football program and for our state.

Yes, its only the bandwagon fans that are calling for Stoops head. Those are the idiots that came out of the woodwork when Stoops won in 2000. Its those fans who go to message boards and blast our opponents and troll then disappear when OU loses. True OU fans, those like me who grew up in the Switzer era and had to suffer through the decade of doom but still wore the crimson and cream with pride, know that Stoops can not win every game. We are there to cheer him on when he does and to console him when he doesn't. True fans don't scream bloody murder when their team loses, they congratulate the other team.

Some of the responses are a bit less than classy, but we see the same thing over and over on these boards. I've been frustrated with the results of the Big Games, but who's gotten us to the Title Game more than any other coach in the last decade? If Stoops leaves, there are probably only 6 coaches in the country that can bring to the table what he brings. Florida's Coach Urban has won two national championship games in 3 years, but his stock slipped considerably when he suspends his best defensive player for only half a game for trying to gouge another player's eyes?! Think Stoops would have stood for that? I think Stoops is a man of character who would have taught that young man a lesson had it been on his team. But we've already seen that with Stoops with Dusty. There are up years and reloading years. I can live with a reloading year like this about once every 5 years. This year was a disappointment, but who doesn't believe the Sooners won't be back chasing the title next year in the Top 10. If you follow the logic of those doomsayers about the coach's effect on the team, then shouldn't OU sink worse next year and maybe not even go to a bowl game instead of sweeping through the season and getting to the Big Game which they predict he will lose. Get real people, we are very fortunate.

Everyone has to deal with adversity, even the artist formerly known as Big Game Bob. Who cares what the redneck idiots say? Their opinions should not wear on Stoops' psyche. Bottom line for longevity in college football is win consistently, and almost no one is better than Coach Stoops. No one displays more of a winning attitude, respect for the game, and respect for the players as Coach Stoops (including you Urban Meyer!). I'm sticking with him, BCS debacles and all.

As a Michigan fan - I don't have any sympathy for you Sooner fans lamenting your bad year.
LOL! Seriously - did you see the article regarding Ohio State - Michigan. There is a quote (and I'm paraphrasing) that as long as OSU beat Michigan - any other big game is just gravy. You guys got a great coach in Stoops - wanna trade?

OSU fans hope they fire Big Game Bob. You fired one of the most successful BB coaches you ever had, and look what happened then. Stoops is arrogant and disrespectful to the opponent. But all he does is win. I wish OSU would get to the point where it loses BCS bowls on a regular basis.

Stoops and the Tulsa World are Idiots..How is that for name calling.....Just remember if you like having a coach who is 4-6 in bowl games , 1-3 in National Championship Games and has lost the last three bowl games then you are happy and should be proud of Stoops for those looses...I found it funny that those who want Stoops to stay for get to state those facts..Texas record 6-5.

grtrsk, Tulsa You will never have to worry about OSU winning any Big 12 title they have never one one conference title since they have been in the Big 6 Big 7 Big 8.. Your team will loose again to OU. You need to keep wishing that Les Miles was still at OSU..Talk about firing coaches............ in 102 games OSU has defeated OU 14 times...not a threat this year. either......

I am impressed with Coach Stoops' ability to recruit players and assistant coaches. I am also impressed with his W-L record. However, when he gets good assistants(Mike Leach, Mike Stoops, etc), they become head-coaches for other teams. Maybe the rotating door for assistant coaches is why I'm not impressed with his coaching skills. He is having trouble winning "Big" games, the games most people remember. Ever since he won his national championship, he seemed to lose his edge. Sometimes change is needed, regardless of the reasons.

A pathetic showing against TTU today but somehow, I am not surprised. And with OSU next week, who knows? Even if OU wins next week, there are no guarantees that OU will get an invitation to a bowl game and if so, which team shows up?
I am sure that OU won't fire him. However, those scumbag regent members might force the issue. Remember, the President and the AD are only as secure at the Board of Regents allows them to be. People forget that. People also forget that the Regents also forced Wilkinson out and created a climate that eventually forced Switzer to quit. Win or else is a powerful message. And I would hate to see Stoops succumb to the "win at any cost" philosophy but this season coupled with his contract coupled with the recent report that the OU football program has the worst graduation rate of any university in the Big 12, makes things interesting. Yes, I believe that Stoops should go but I also believe that he could be simply a prisoner of his own stubborn pride. Maybe he deserves another chance!
I think that OU should announce that if a bowl game is offered to the Sooners, that they will turn it down. Make the Bedlam their bowl game. If they lose, no worries as we are 6-6 for the season. If we win, we totally mess up OSU's chances for a good bowl game, Gundy probably has another public temper tantrum, and OU has something to build on for next year and beyond. Ok, give Stoops a set of marching orders...remap the program from top to bottom to include offensive and defensive philosophies, fire or replace much of the coaching staff, especially Wilson. Yank scholarships on marginal players and give them to the deserving players. And recruit, recruit, and recruit. He has 3 years to win another NC or he is gone. That leaves him 2 years short of his contract but makes the buyout cheaper. If he performs, then we set an new set of expectations...another NC in three more years, etc. Of course, this assumes that the Regents allow him to remain.
Time for major changes. And don't bring up Gibbs (he tried and got run out of town) and Blake (who's players won our last NC under Stoops).
As Stoops has said, "The history of Oklahoma means championships. Anything less that that is unacceptable."
So Bob, if you have a job at the end of the year, get cracking cupcake. The Sooner Monster that Sittler likes to pretend no longer exists, is now perched on your shoulder.

The trailer trash fanbase of your school is bad news. It's also the reason that Cowboys hate you so much.
I went to Norman for a Bedlam game one time. It was in 2003, the year after I graduated from OSU.
I almost got in a fist-fight with a 55 year old man at a bar in Norman. He told me all about being a 20something year season ticket holder and got extremely angry when I asked him what year he graduated from college. That is pretty typical of your crowd.
Like it or not, the Cowboys are on the make. Our program is competing at the top of the Big 12, and will soon be a national contender. Uncle Boone is making sure of that.
The downside to this change in Stillwater is that it is changing our culture, which many of us do not see as a great thing and if OU keeps having seasons like this, it will attract the uneducated element of your camp. I've always been content with the Cowboys, the one thing that I fear, is that your trashy fanbase is going to migrate my way. I don't want that taint on my organization of friends and alums.
Pefrect solution for Sideshow Bob, Mike Gundy, OSU Alums and OU Alums alike is to attract investors to bring a legitimate NFL program to Oklahoma. That takes the heat off of everyone. We can all support the Pro team, while keeping the rift-raft at content with another program.

Let's see....Stoops is at the best going for 7-5 this year, and possibly not a winning season and here you are defending him. Rightfully so, he's a good coach and OU is better because of him. What I think is odd is how in the same week you defend the coach whose team is imploding while taking every pot shot you can at the coach whose team is managing to find ways to win. I think this is a well balanced article....I just wish you would find that balance in articles for other schools.

Totally condescending, defensive and insulting column. You presume to speak for the majority of Sooner fans because you remember the 1990s? Yeah, so do I. I also remember the 70s and 80s and like to think that the 90s were an exception and not the norm for this program. You ignore the fact that this is a football state, without a professional team, and one that can sustain and should expect a top quality program.
I and some of the other commenters might cut you some slack if you ever honestly acknowledged any of the most blatant and unforgivable coaching botches that have caused totally preventable losses, both in conference and bowl games. But that's apparently off limits.
Feel free to call me crackpot and remind me that OU stunk in the 1990s. I know, I was there! And I'll feel free to remind you in 2020 of OU's failed bids for the Independence Bowl in the remaining years of Stoops's contract.
Oh yeah, and remind me again, who was the last good coach at Notre Dame? Yeah, they sure know how to pick a winner, right?

Rocky, if your "degreed" mind didn't tell you to stay out of Norman bars after Bedlam, while wearing orange, then you got cheated by Ag U. More advice for your personal safety: Don't go into North Tulsa bars wearing your "White Power" t-shirt. And don't worry about Sooner fans heading to "The Land of the Jokes", as suicide would still be the preferred option of the two.
