OU Notebook: Brotherly shrug

Today could go a long way toward determining what bowl Oklahoma plays in. And Arizona, for that matter, as the Wildcats try to stay in the Rose Bowl running with a big home game against Oregon.

There are some who have already predicted a Bob-vs.-Mike Stoops Bowl at the Holiday or Sun. That can't make the Sooners' head coach too happy.

Can it?

"Nobody knows any of that," Stoops asserted last week.

Well, no, they don't. But it is a possibility. And so reporters pressed the issue, asking Stoops what would happen if the Sooners and Wildcats were matched up.

"Well, we'd go play Arizona," he said.

But, really, wouldn't you feel pretty lousy about that?

"Ah, wouldn't matter," Stoops insisted.

Reminded that he has said he wouldn't want to coach against a brother because "somebody has to lose," Stoops came back with: "The regular season, that's not good. Once the season's over, in a bowl game, then someone's got to win. I'd rather it be some type of championship game. But in the end, nobody knows that right now."

Who's running the show? It appears the Sooners will be using multiple defensive backs against multiple quarterbacks. Tech coach Mike Leach has used both Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield recently. The duo combined to go 35-of-58 for 307 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in last Saturday's 24-17 loss at Oklahoma State.

"He's going to call the same plays regardless of who's out there," OU secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright said of Leach. "He's going to try to attack you the same way. We'll prepare for both of them. We expect to see both of them."

"I think they both, Sheffield and Potts, do a good job," Stoops said. "They've got good arms. You see all the familiar patterns and routes and spacing of the receivers, getting the ball to everybody like Mike does."

Kansas comment: Kansas plays at Texas tonight under trying circumstances, with coach Mark Mangino under an internal investigation over behavior toward his players.

Stoops is a longtime friend of Mangino, and when asked about Mangino's relationship with players, he said: "He always has been very close with his guys and very concerned about them, compassionate about them. All the times I've been with him, he's been very close to his guys."
