OU: Report card
OU's Chris Brown (right) runs by Texas Tech's Jamar Wall during Saturday's game. The Sooners averaged just 1.8 yards per rush. STEPHEN PINGRY / Tulsa World

Offense: F
Another road game, another epic collapse. The Sooners averaged just 1.8 yards per rush and completed just over 50 percent of their passes. Big-play threats DeMarco Murray (11) and Ryan Broyles (8) combined for just 19 touches. Landry Jones was sacked three times and threw another interception. OU tried the Wildcat formation six times, and Broyles' first career pass attempt was an interception in the end zone.
Defense: F
This was as bad a performance by a Grade-A defense as OU has had since the Orange Bowl loss to USC. The Sooners gave up 549 yards and were consistently bad tackling Tech runners Baron Batch (136 yards rushing, 68 receiving) and Eric Stephens (46), who averaged 5.5 yards per carry and scored three TDs. Tech converted 8-of-17 third downs and was 2-for-2 on fourth down. Taylor Potts passed for 388 yards and two touchdowns, including 11 completions for 163 yards to Alex Torres. An 18-play, 80-yard drive — on which Tech also overcame 30 yards in penalties — was humiliating. Four Sooners had double-digit tackles, a sign the other team has the ball too much.
Special teams: A-
Patrick O'Hara did his part, making two field goals and an extra point. His 47-yarder was the Sooners longest in more than two years. Tress Way averaged 42.8 yards on punts and twice pinned Tech inside its 20. Matt Moreland's kickoffs were adequate, and coverage (16 yards was the longest kickoff return) was excellent. The Sooners got virtually nothing on their own returns, though, with a long of 20.

Atlanta Sooner - F- because you can't blame the fans or the sportswriters for the game that was just played.
Fair Weather Fans - F because they will just do what they always do, give their tickets away until they get the ship righted and go back to scoring 80 points per game.
"True Fans" (Fans that support the team even when they stink) - A+ because they hurt as much ss some of the players and some of the coaches when the team plays like it did Saturday.
Local Sports Writers - B+ because they came late to realize this team is not very good, but their analysis of what is happening is correct given the facts and the comments of coaches and players alike after the game. You can't hide the fact that several players on the defense publicly said they didn't show up for this game. Nothing wrong with the truth. Something very wrong with the sense of pride you get when you are elite and then lay the kind of egg this defense did Saturday.
If you think TT is good, you haven't been paying attention. If OU plays this way against any team except Idaho State, they won't win. I don't care how much you love them, they are still going to be embarassed by getting their "butts whipped" to quote several players and coaches on the OU team.
Atlanta Sooner, your "true fan" status would have cost us Bob Stoops because you would have lobbied hard to not be critical of the debacle of the Blake/Schnellenberger years. I am glad the "true fans" didn't win that debate. I prefer what Stoops is doing to what I saw in OU uniforms at that time, but yesterday looked too much like those days for me to be happy.
Nothing about this article is false or hyperbole. It is just reporting the reality of what has happened this year. Next year is next year. It could be turned around, or it could slide again. I think the sportswriters need to do their job, the coaches do their job, and the players play with pride and discipline. The fans just need to show up and be loud when they do play.
Now is the time for true fans to hope that Bob Stoops can right the ship and stop this trend by making whatever changes he needs to make. If he can't, he will end up as all coaches do, working somewhere else. I loved his "No Excuses" program when he got to OU. Now, it is time to go back to it. I think he will, and things will get better next year by leaps and bounds.

I hope this grade on the defense will stop all the frabba jabba that this years' defense is "one of the all time best". It was adequate in that it kept the Sooners close in the 4 previous losses by a total of 12 points. The defense either quit on Saturday or just can't handle the pressure of being behind anymore. But don't classify this team as "an all time" anything.

Who's in charge of the offense? Kevin Wilson. Who's in charge of the defense? Venables. They should get the F. (for FIRED).
