OU's future QB must earn spot

Landry Jones has thrown for 2,556 yards, 23 TDs and 13 interceptions. Stephen Pingry / Tulsa World

Is Landry Jones Oklahoma's quarterback of the future?

Jones is a redshirt freshman. He's started eight of OU's 11 games this season, and finished two others. He's completed 58 percent of his passes, thrown for 2,556 yards and 23 touchdowns. Not bad. Not Sam Bradford or Jason White numbers, but — since those guys won Heisman Trophies and all — not bad.

But Jones has also thrown 13 interceptions. He was the quarterback on the field at the end of all five of OU's losses. He's been — there's no other way to put it — terrible away from home. He's been careless with the football, he's been inaccurate with long, intermediate and even very short throws, and he's been awful in clutch situations, failing to rally for fourth-quarter touchdowns in all four close losses.

After OU's 41-13 loss at Texas Tech on Saturday, Bob Stoops said the notion of taking Drew Allen out of redshirt was not happening.

Allen won't play in the bowl game — yes, OU still gets to go to a bowl — but if he were to get more work in December practices, it would speed up his development. But on Sunday, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said OU's bowl practices won't exactly be open auditions between Jones and Allen.

If Allen was markedly better than Jones, he'd have played this year. He's not. Not yet. The trick with Jones is he's so good at home, but so bad elsewhere. How can he be benched after throwing for six TDs against Tulsa, or five TDs against Texas A&M?

Then there's incoming freshman Blake Bell. The Wichita (Kan.) Bishop Carroll stud won't arrive until next summer, so he won't be able to impress coaches or teammates during winter conditioning and spring practice. Bell is considered still raw but, at 6-foot-6, he's got a powerful arm and is an athletic runner. Still, it seems unlikely that Bell would be good enough to overtake Jones (or even Allen) during two-a-days next August.

Bell has put up two years of crazy stats against ordinary high school opponents. Carroll started this season 11-0 before running into the buzz-saw of five-time state champion Hutchinson and lost 42-21 on Friday night. Bell was 31-of-40 for 248 yards and ran for two TDs. His upside is tremendous.

Then again, Wilson said, Jones is "gonna have to earn it. There's no guarantees. You're gonna have to earn it with your work and how you play, and you're gonna have to earn it with your performance. And with that, you'll get the opportunity to play and you'll earn the respect of your players ... Just because you've done it in the past, there's no guarantees, for anyone."

Don't think we'll see Jones at the starter next year. That is, until the other two guys get hurt.

Landry Jones is dunsky. Kevin Wilson, who says the quarterback must "earn it", has not "earned it" either. Hence, Wilson is dunsky.

We don't have a clue who will be our starting QB next year. Nobody should rule out any of the three prospects. Jones or Allen might improve between now and then. Bell will have to be All World to jump in that quickly.

As for Jones having to earn his starting job next year, who doesn't that apply to? If Jones loses his starting job, my guess is he will not be the only one of this year's starters to do so.

Jones has tunnel vision. He does not see the field, instead locking in on his primary target. He also is a little below average in accuracy. If he's the best we have, get ready for mediocrity.

Look, the reality of this situation is clear - the cupboard is not bare at QB for OU. The team suffered several injuries at key positions and started redshirt and true freshman at positions they would not have liked to.

Here's the real difference between OU and Texas. They both recruit well but Texas does just a bit better job with those 5 star and some 4 star players. There is plenty of talent to go around but when you look at how many 5 star recruits OU pulls in from Texas, the team is always 2-4 5 star recruits behind Texas (Florida, USC, etc..).

Now normally this will not really effect OU's season because their weaknesses are not fully blown until they get in to a bowl game where there are coaches just as good as OU's (some would say better). However, depth at key positions is effected and this is where Texas, Florida, USC, LSU beat OU (West Virginia and Boise do not count as OU just wanted to party and lost for lack of focus).

Back in the day, OU could out innovate most of the Big 12 with their 3 star players and develop an offensive system that allowed for the staff to "surprise" the other team.

Guess what, OU isn't surprising anyone with their 2-3 star recruits and vanilla offensive scheme. Oh, sure A&M got beat bad and there were other big wins but for all those - there were horrible games like Tech, Nebraska, et al...

Bottom line is that OU must put more focus on the lines both offense and defense. They also need to quit recruiting RB's and then try and convert them to safety or corner. Too much of today's game is niche oriented and players already know where they want to play college due to the system and the position they want to play. This is why Cobbs chose Texas (Tennesee first and then Texas now) because he is a 5 star that is being allowed to play (we'll see if this remains true) his desired position of QB or WR. When a 5 star stud from Oklahoma chooses our arch rival over us that is a clear indicator that something is wrong.

OU needs to reevaluate their coaching staff and they need to reinvigorate their offensive scheme. Stoops is the man and he knows it but every other position needs to be reinvented or they need to be fired..........

Any rumors of Stoops leaving are false, no school really wants Big Game Bob and a 5 million per year salary when they can land Harbaugh from Stanford or Patterson from TCU for half that. These coaches have done more with less than any other coaches in the FBS. Some would say that Meyer might go to Notre Dame but that is wishful thinking unless ND throws 6 mill per year at him.

So, we are stuck with Big Game Bobby but he must hear our screams and rants..... Rebuild the depth and rebuild the offensive scheme or be run out of town. There is a fine line between hero and (insert explicative)...loser.

Have a good day,
CS

CS,
Good stuff there to think about, including who will probably be the two most desired coaches in the country for the ND job. Thanks for sharing.

I think Bradford was exceptional in QB smarts....seeing the whole field as a point guard on a basketball court. Josh Heupel had that too. Jones is not there yet.....but he is still where no one else is right now.....QB for OU. I've heard this cry for years....always wanting the 2nd string QB.

I think if you take away the interceptions that were tipped or mishandled by a receiver, and consider all the drops by the receivers, Jones numbers are a lot better. I think the play-calling has been suspect throughout the year, just like it was vs. Florida.

Many or the tipped passes were caused by the receivers trying to snag balls way over their heads or thrown behind them. Someone needs to tell Laundry Joes that he has to throw where the receiver is going to be, not where he is when Laundry Joes releases the ball.

bob stoops and his staff owes the OU fans an appology for this season! they have made a joke out of OU football this year. and there is no excuse for this BS... and anybody that thinks this is ok then you are not an OU fan! There is not one oline that would play at BAYLOR for christ sakes... scholarships should be pulled and replaced. PATHETIC!!!

Lots of dropped passes, I agree, could have been better thrown balls, but if the ball touches your hands or hits your helmet, or even hits you in the numbers you gotta make the catch. Landry showed signs of greatness, and of weakness.

In my opinion, OU needs a Qb like Bell, one who can run when needed, or one that can stand in the pocket and take a hit. We havent had a mobile QB in who knows how long?

Very disappointing year, but, hopefully we will learn from this and have our 2nd string or in some cases 3rd string better equipped! OU has just been lucky the last 8 years or so and hasnt sustained to many injuries at key positions, which has been the case this year!

WOW, look at all of you superior Coaches and Players out there commenting on how OU plays. Glad you guys are in the NFL, and not couch potatoes. Its easy to sit in the bleachers and complain, it takes no talent to do that. Why not just support the team and know that we are going through some growing pains. It hasn't been the best season, but I still love me some Sooner Football.

cmon guys. Jones had no offensive line and WRs were dropping on-the-money passes left and right and many of them couldn't get open. Give Jones an Offensive Line, then he will get a Running Game (leading rusher is under 700 yards????), then he will be another NFL prospect.

Ding, ding, ding, ding! And the prize for correctness of the idea of the situation at OU goes to.......wdc68!!!!!

Anyone of you wahoo's notice everything collapsed after last years line graduated???? Not even Sam Bradford did squat with this years line! The O-line is EVERYTHING. Nothing happens if there is no blocking! OU sucks away from home because the line can't communicate with opposing crowd noise. Not like at home when the crowd shuts up when it's O-time. Give Landry a break! When his good throws weren't dropped or tipped to somebody else, he's in an incredible hurry to get rid of the dang thing because he is thinking that he's a half second away from getting crippled on every snap! He locks on to receivers because his average time to consider other targets is 0.6 seconds. Jones and Bradford know exactly how fun it is to get slammed by bigger faster stronger people running full speed. If you say you could take those hits over and over, you are flat out stupid and haven't a clue what it's like to stand inside of a flimsy pocket of protection against major school talent. Jones knows just like Bradford that the next snap could be the last one and don't think it doesn't weigh heavily on their minds.

Get Jones a line in front of him and I bet you anything he becomes a legend up there with Heupel, White, and Bradford. Three qb's who almost never ran for their lives during championship seasons.

wow if jnes is our future we are in BAD trouble....he can't roll out and pass, can't run, he either throw high, behind the receiver,or interceptions. i dont understand why they did not put in nemo the QB. he could not have possibly done any worse than jones. i still like and hope scoops stays but he HAS to make changes in wilson(hopefully gone)...Brent V isnt to much better...absolutely DID NOT have his defense ready to play at TECH. CHANGES ARE NEEDED AT OU COACHING STAFF.

OU got whooped. Their offense couldn't keep Tech's offense off the field and OU's defense just got tired. Tech has a no huddle offense. I bet they burned those darn uniforms.

I still think OU will beat OSU at home. That is if the offense can score 17pts., because the defense will score at least 7 after OSU fumbles or gets intercepted.

Hurry up and get us out of our freaking misery. Kevin Wilson you have not earned one dat gum dollar with your lousy offensive scheme. If you were so brilliant why haven't school come knocking on your door to make you a head coach? You know why? Because you suck and you have no creativity. Bob, if you are a p@#K and can't fire a below average guy, and that includes Venables, take yall washed up assets to South Bend. If you don't care about the program, we don't care about you.

I agree with wdc, The O line is terrible..Jones is a decent QB, but w/o blocking up front, he's toast..No running game so it's like a jail break..The Nebraska game, a lot of the int.'s were because the ball was sailing on him, meaning he was not stepping into the throw, because he was on his heels because of the pass rush.I hope they get 3 or 4 Juco O linemen to come in and help from the get go.
